To shoot Apple ProRAW in Halide, use a compatible Pro iPhone, select Apple’s default look in Halide Mark III, and retain the RAW file if you plan to edit it in Photo Lab. ProRAW originals are DNG files; an edited copy shared from Photos may instead be a JPG. The exact controls depend on your Halide version, so the Mark III steps below are separate from the older 2024 interface instructions.
Which iPhones support ProRAW?
Apple documents ProRAW support on iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro models running iOS 14.3 or later. Check the model and iOS version before looking for a ProRAW control; a non-Pro iPhone is not listed as compatible in Apple’s guidance. Apple’s ProRAW support page has the current compatibility details.

ProRAW incorporates iPhone image processing while retaining flexibility for later edits. It is not the same workflow as Halide’s Process Zero, which Halide describes as a distinct, minimally processed RAW path. Choose between them based on the capture look and editing latitude you want, rather than treating the two formats as interchangeable. How do I shoot ProRAW in Halide?
In Halide Mark III
- Open Halide and tap the current look control.
- Choose Apple’s default look. Halide’s Mark III guide says this selects Apple ProRAW rather than Bayer RAW.
- Turn on the RAW toggle if you want the RAW file retained for development in Photo Lab.
- Compose and capture the photo. Confirm the labels in your installed version if the controls differ from these instructions.

In the older documented Halide interface
Halide’s August 2024 tutorial describes choosing a capture format through the format icon in the Quick Bar or in Capture settings. It lists ProRAW as an available format and describes 12 MP and 48 MP options where the iPhone supports them. Those are older control locations; do not assume they match Mark III’s look-picker workflow. See Halide’s 2024 format instructions and check the labels in the version installed on your phone.
Choose resolution with the shot in mind
On iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models, Apple documents 12 MP and 48 MP ProRAW options. A 48 MP image can preserve more detail for cropping, but Apple says only the main camera at 1× can save a photo at that resolution. Under Apple’s documented conditions, Night mode, flash, macro, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto photos are limited to 12 MP. ProRAW is unavailable with Live Photos, Portrait mode, and video. Apple’s compatibility and capture limitations provide the details.

These are Apple’s published approximate sizes, not guaranteed file sizes for every photo. Apple says ProRAW files are 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG files, with 48 MP files larger still. Leave room for the DNG originals if you intend to keep a series of shots. Apple’s ProRAW guidance covers the storage estimates.
How do I edit ProRAW photos in Halide?
Develop a RAW in Mark III Photo Lab
Open Photo Lab from a captured RAW photo. Its quick-edit pane provides looks, HDR and film-simulation toggles, and exposure adjustment. The detailed panels cover framing, exposure, film effects, and white balance. Start with the correction the image needs most; for example, adjust exposure before refining color balance. The available controls are described in Halide’s Mark III guide.

If you are following Halide’s 2024 tutorial
The older workflow is to tap the latest photo to enter the library, find the image, then use the +/- icon to adjust exposure in Image Lab. Set the brightness and apply the adjustment. These steps describe the earlier interface, not the Mark III Photo Lab. Halide’s September 2024 Editing RAW tutorial documents that version.
When to use another editor
Halide’s 2024 tutorial suggests starting a broader RAW edit with exposure, then white balance, lowering highlights, and raising shadows. It names Darkroom, RAW Power, Photomator, Capture One, and Adobe Lightroom as examples for more extensive creative editing; this is Halide’s list, not a comparative ranking. Apple cautions that an app without ProRAW support may display a file differently than expected, so use an editor that supports ProRAW or DNG and inspect the rendered result before exporting. How do I share the original ProRAW file?
Decide whether the recipient needs an editable original, a rendered image, or both. Apple says the original ProRAW image uses the standard DNG format and has a .dng extension; an edited image shared from the Photos app may be a .jpg. A JPG is a rendered result, not the original RAW negative.
- For the original: transfer the DNG using AirDrop or iCloud Photos.
- For both original and edited copy: Apple describes using Image Capture on Mac or Windows Photos on PC, or AirDrop options that include all photo data.
- For a finished image only: share the edited Photos-app copy, understanding that it may be a JPG.
