Wrap the figure individually, secure it in a cushioned inner box, then place that box inside a larger, padded shipping box. The goal is to prevent both impact and movement without letting packing materials rub a delicate finish or press on thin parts. Carrier packaging guidance can help you prepare a parcel, but it is not a guarantee against damage.
Prepare the figure and protect its finish
- Remove only safely detachable pieces. If the base, stand, or accessories are designed to come off, pack them separately so they cannot strike the figure. Do not force a joint or attachment that is not meant to detach.
- Put a clean, nonabrasive barrier against a delicate surface. Painted, flocked, or soft finishes may be marked by direct contact with some cushioning materials. Carrier guidance recommends wrapping fragile items individually but does not test materials against collectible finishes. Test an unfamiliar material in an inconspicuous spot or ask the maker for advice.
- Wrap the figure without stressing it. Cushion projecting parts and fragile joints, taking care not to crush thin pieces or force loose components together. Pack it so it cannot move
Choose a sound inner box
Use a sturdy carton with enough room to surround the wrapped figure with cushioning. Center the figure and fill the voids so it cannot shift, but do not pack it tightly against a wall, corner, or hard object. Use a second box when the figure warrants it
For a particularly fragile, valuable, or awkward figure, place the closed inner box inside a larger outer box. UPS recommends the two-box method for fragile goods, with cushioning around the inner box. FedEx also advises double-boxing and specifies 3 inches of cushioning in and around the inner box in its breakables guidance. Check for shifting before sealing for good
Close the packed box and gently shake it. If you hear or feel movement, add cushioning and check again. USPS recommends adding cushioning when contents shift or can be heard moving. Assess the fully packed parcel; do not shake an unprotected figure as a test. USPS package preparation

Choose packaging materials for the parcel and the surface
- Corrugated boxes: Use sturdy inner and outer cartons that leave room for cushioning. UPS recommends a rigid box with attached flaps and describes double-boxing for fragile items. A “double-wall” box may be a useful search term, but choose based on the parcel’s size and the box’s stated capacity rather than the label alone. UPS packaging tips
- Bubble wrap or air-cellular cushioning: These can cushion an individually wrapped figure. Use a barrier first if direct contact could abrade or mark the finish; follow UPS’s guidance to use multiple layers with the flat side toward the item. UPS packaging tips
- Packing paper or other void fill: Use enough to stop the figure inside its box and, for double-boxing, the inner carton inside the outer one. - Shipping tape: Use tape intended for packaging to close the carton and reinforce its seams. USPS recommends strong packaging tape and seam reinforcement.
Seal and address the parcel

- Place the shipping label securely on a broad, flat surface. Include a duplicate delivery and return address inside the package, as UPS advises. UPS packaging tips
- A “Fragile” marking does not replace cushioning and a well-sealed box. Pack for ordinary parcel handling rather than relying on a label to prevent impact.
Decide whether to pack it yourself or get help
For a common figure that fits securely in available cartons, careful individual wrapping and void filling may be practical. Double-boxing is the more protective approach recommended for fragile goods by UPS and FedEx, but it adds packaging material and parcel size. No single cushioning material is established as best for every collectible; consider the figure’s fragility, value, shape, available cushioning space, and surface sensitivity.
