To share your screen on a live stream, either use YouTube Live Control Room’s built-in screen sharing while streaming with a webcam, or add a display or window capture source to an OBS scene and send the output to YouTube. Use YouTube’s built-in option for a straightforward share; choose OBS when you need a composed layout or more control over audio. Test the picture and sound before presenting.
Choose a screen-sharing method

This is a practical comparison of the documented controls, not a performance test. For a simple presentation, YouTube’s built-in sharing may be enough. OBS offers more ways to arrange sources and manage what goes to the stream.

Share your screen through YouTube Live Control Room
- Connect a webcam and microphone, then start a webcam-based live stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Choose the screen-sharing control and select whether to share an entire screen, a window, or a browser tab.
- For a supported browser tab, YouTube says tab audio is shared by default. Check that this is the audio you intend viewers to hear.
- When finished, stop sharing in Live Control Room or use the browser’s stop-sharing control.
This route depends on having the webcam and microphone connected, even if your main goal is showing a screen.
Share a screen or application with OBS Studio
1. Set up OBS and a scene
- Install and open OBS Studio, then run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS says the wizard considers your hardware and network conditions when configuring the software.
- Create or select a scene. OBS scenes combine sources such as displays, windows, cameras, and audio.
- In the Sources panel, add the capture source that matches what you want viewers to see:
- Entire display: use Display Capture on Windows, Linux, and macOS 12.6 or earlier. For macOS 13, OBS directs users to macOS Screen Capture.
- One application: use Window Capture on Windows, Linux, and macOS 12.6 or earlier. For macOS 13, use macOS Screen Capture.
- Hardware-accelerated game on Windows: OBS describes Game Capture as a Windows-only source for this case; it is not the general option for a browser or ordinary application.
2. Configure the audio viewers should hear
Check the Audio Mixer while speaking and playing any application sound you want included. OBS’s Quick Start Guide says desktop audio and the microphone are captured by default. If the expected meter does not move, or the wrong device appears active, open Settings → Audio and select the intended input devices.

For application-specific audio, OBS documents Application Audio Capture on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. OBS 30.1 added the option to include audio with Window Capture or Game Capture sources. If you use separate Application Audio Capture sources, OBS advises disabling the global Desktop Audio source to avoid echo.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the server URL and stream key for the stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the service connection fields.
- Confirm the OBS preview shows the intended capture and that the audio meters respond as expected.
- Start the stream from OBS and check the YouTube Live Control Room status before presenting.
The stream key is used to connect the encoder to YouTube. Treat it as private account access information and do not show it in your captured screen or share it with viewers.

Preflight: check the picture, sound, and privacy
- Look at the OBS preview or YouTube sharing selection and verify it is the intended monitor, window, or tab.
- Confirm the microphone meter moves while you speak.
- If viewers need application sound, play a sample and confirm its meter or tab-audio sharing is active.
- Close or hide private windows and disable notifications that could appear in the capture.
- Make a short test recording or stream before the real presentation. OBS explicitly recommends testing for a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a first broadcast.
Copyright rules still apply to material shown or played during a live stream. Only share content you have permission to use, and check YouTube’s current requirements before broadcasting copyrighted music, video, or other protected material. Reusing content does not become permitted simply because it is displayed as part of a screen share.

The preview is blank or shows the wrong thing
Check that the selected source matches the target: Display Capture for a whole monitor, Window Capture for an application on supported systems, or macOS Screen Capture for macOS 13 as directed by OBS. Re-select the correct display or window in the source settings and confirm it is visible in the scene preview. The exact operating-system permission prompts and recovery steps vary; consult the current OS guidance if capture remains blank.

Viewers cannot hear the application
Picture capture and application audio are separate. Check the Audio Mixer while playing sound. On supported Windows versions, configure Application Audio Capture or use the relevant source’s audio option. In YouTube’s built-in route, tab audio is shared by default for a supported browser tab; do not assume that sharing a display or window also shares its audio.
There is an echo or duplicate audio
Look for the same sound entering through more than one source. If using separate Application Audio Capture sources, OBS advises disabling global Desktop Audio to avoid echo. Check that the microphone is not also being captured by another active input.

The microphone is silent or the wrong microphone is active
Watch the microphone meter in OBS. If it does not respond or responds to the wrong device, open Settings → Audio and select the intended input manually, then test again.
