AI can make old or low-resolution video cleaner, larger, steadier, or smoother—but it cannot reliably recover detail that the camera never captured. Start by identifying the footage and its defects, then test a short, representative clip before processing the full video. Deinterlacing, noise reduction, stabilization, sharpening, and upscaling are separate jobs, and applying the wrong ones can make a video look less authentic.
What AI video restoration can—and cannot—do
AI restoration tools offer distinct operations rather than one universal “make it HD” fix. Depending on the product, these can include upscaling, denoising, focus restoration, stabilization, sharpening, deinterlacing, and frame interpolation. Topaz documents several of these capabilities for its desktop Video product and describes separate models for different tasks (Topaz Video; Topaz Video documentation).

Upscaling enlarges an image; it does not prove that newly visible detail existed in the original. Some enhancement models can produce a sharper-looking result without faithfully restoring lost information. Topaz’s guidance for one model specifically cautions that it is not a restoration model and will not remove film hairs and scratches or generate authentic details (Topaz enhancement filters). Treat generated texture and smoothness as a model’s interpretation, not historical evidence.

Make an untouched copy of the digitized original. For a working copy, record the resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, and whether the video is progressive or interlaced. Also note the visible problems: comb-like edges in motion, grain or electronic noise, softness, camera shake, scratches, or judder.

- Extract many other file formats including wma, m4q, aac, aiff, cda and more
- Interlaced footage: Determine whether the source is interlaced before processing. Deinterlacing is a specific conversion task, not a general sharpness filter. Topaz documents Dione models for deinterlacing and distinguishes workflows for progressive and interlaced input (Topaz Video documentation; Topaz interlacing filters).
- Noise or grain: Try conservative denoising if distracting noise obscures the image. Too much can erase fine texture, hair, or facial detail.
- Camera movement: Consider stabilization only if unwanted shake is a problem. It can change framing and may introduce edge artifacts.
- Soft or small image: Test focus restoration or upscaling only after examining the source. A larger frame is not automatically a more faithful one.
- Low frame rate or judder: Frame interpolation creates intermediate frames. It may make movement look smoother but can alter the original cadence or produce warped motion.
A careful workflow for restoring old video
- Protect the source. Keep the original digitized file untouched and work from a duplicate. Preserve any accompanying notes about the recording or transfer.
- Inspect a representative excerpt. Choose a short section that includes movement, faces, fine texture, and the most difficult defects. A quiet, sharp opening shot may not reveal how a model handles the rest of the tape.
- Choose operations to match defects. Deinterlace only when the source is interlaced. If noise is the main issue, test denoising before adding sharpening. Apply stabilization only where shake matters; consider upscaling after checking that earlier changes remain natural. This is a practical sequence, not a mandatory recipe—footage and controls differ.
- Preview and adjust. Use the tool’s preview controls and task-specific models where available. Topaz documentation describes separate model paths and preview-oriented settings; the appropriate choice depends on the footage (Topaz Video documentation).
- Compare at two scales. Check the output at ordinary viewing size and enlarged. Review moving footage as well as still frames: temporal flicker, crawling texture, smearing, and inconsistent faces can be missed in a single frame.
- Keep only changes that help. Reduce sharpening if edges develop halos or brittle outlines. Avoid interpolation if it changes the source’s character. Once the short test looks acceptable, process the full project with those settings and review the rendered file.
Tools and workflow trade-offs
| Option | Documented workflow | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Topaz Video desktop | Topaz describes a Mac and Windows desktop product with denoising, upscaling, focus restoration, stabilization, and frame interpolation. Its documentation includes separate model paths, including Dione for interlaced footage (product page; interlacing filters). | Useful when you want task-specific controls and previews. Choose models and settings against your own representative clip; no single preset is right for every source. |
| Topaz panel for Premiere | Topaz describes its Premiere panel as a free UXP panel that sends project media to Topaz Cloud; processing requires a Topaz account and paid cloud credits (Topaz Video product page). | Cloud processing avoids treating it as a fully local workflow, and credits are an additional requirement. Check current terms before committing a large project. |
| Topaz plugin for DaVinci Resolve | Topaz says the plugin requires DaVinci Resolve Studio. It also warns that performance and UI responsiveness can be reduced at three-to-four-times upscaling (Resolve plugin documentation). | Confirm that your Resolve edition meets the requirement. Large enlargement may affect responsiveness. |
| Adobe Firefly online video upscaler | Adobe describes an online video upscaler powered by Topaz Astra. It can download the result as MP4 or hand it off to Premiere or Firefly’s video editor (Adobe Firefly video upscaler). | This is an available online workflow, not evidence that it produces better results than desktop tools. Check current access and terms in Adobe’s product information. |
Topaz’s preset guide includes a “4K & 60 FPS” preset using Proteus for 4K upscaling and Apollo for frame interpolation, as well as a denoise preset using Nyx (Topaz preset guide). These are product presets, not a recommendation to convert every historical video to 4K or 60 frames per second. Preserve the source’s cadence and proportions unless you have a specific reason to change them.
Choose based on compatibility, control, and output
- Task fit: Check whether your main need is deinterlacing, denoising, stabilization, enlargement, or another operation. Interlaced footage needs particular attention.
- Processing location: Decide whether a local desktop workflow or cloud processing suits your privacy, bandwidth, hardware, and project needs.
- Host app and operating system: Verify compatibility before buying or installing. For example, the documented Topaz Resolve plugin requires Resolve Studio.
- Preview and model control: Prefer a workflow that lets you inspect a representative section and adjust the operation rather than committing blindly to a full export.
- Current terms: Product features, integrations, credit requirements, and prices may change. Check the relevant vendor page at the time you choose.
- Your own footage: There is no substitute for comparing the output with your source. Vendor feature descriptions do not establish a quantified improvement on your particular recording.
Common problems and what to check
- Motion still has comb-like edges: Recheck whether the source is interlaced and whether you selected an appropriate deinterlacing workflow; Topaz documents Dione models for this purpose.
- Faces or texture look waxy: Reduce denoising or enhancement strength and inspect the result in motion. A cleaner still frame can come at the cost of natural detail.
- Edges look harsh or outlined: Back off sharpening. Upscaling and sharpening can exaggerate noise, halos, and compression artifacts.
- Movement looks unnaturally smooth or distorted: Disable frame interpolation or use a less aggressive approach. Added frames are estimates, not frames recovered from the recording.
- The Resolve workflow is unavailable: Confirm you have DaVinci Resolve Studio, which Topaz lists as a plugin requirement.
- The Premiere panel will not process a project: Check for a Topaz account and paid cloud credits; the panel is described as sending project media to Topaz Cloud.
- Resolve feels less responsive during enlargement: Topaz warns that performance and UI responsiveness may be reduced at three-to-four-times upscaling. Try a smaller preview or a less demanding scale before a full render.
Or let it run in the cloud
