How to Share Your Location With Emergency Contacts While Traveling

Set up travel location sharing before you leave. Compare Android and iPhone live sharing, check-ins, Emergency SOS and the limits of satellite location.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up location sharing before you leave, then choose a method that fits the trip: live location for ongoing travel, a scheduled check-in for a planned outing, or Emergency SOS when you need urgent help. Ordinary location sharing needs connectivity; satellite options are limited by device, region and conditions, so they are not a dependable substitute for an emergency plan.

Choose the right kind of sharing

Set up location sharing on Android

Google’s Android emergency help instructions describe features in the Safety or Personal Safety app. Availability depends on the device and user, and some functions require Location Services, permissions or supported regional availability.

Add emergency contacts and information

  1. Open the Safety app and sign in if prompted.
  2. Choose Your info and add emergency contacts and any medical information you want available.
  3. Decide whether to make emergency information visible from the phone’s lock screen.

Start Emergency Sharing manually

  1. Open the Safety app and tap Emergency sharing.
  2. Select the contacts, add an optional message, then tap Share.

Real-time location sharing requires both an internet connection and Location Services to be on. Emergency Sharing ends automatically after 24 hours unless you stop it sooner.

ACR ResQLink View PLB425 - Buoyant GPS Personal Locator Beacon - 2922
  • Once activated, an SOS distress signal with GPS position is sent direct to Search and Rescue forces worldwide using the 406 MHz Emergency Distress Signal with 121.5 MHz Homing Signal (No Subscription Required)
  • Small, rugged, lightweight personal locator beacon that is buoyant and includes attachment clips including a belt clip, oral inflation tube clip, straps and lanyards for increased wearability for hikers, boaters, campers, climbers, RVing and all your outdoor adventures
  • Send pre-canned non-emergency self test and GPS test messages to multiple contacts via text message (SMS) and email with a customized message using the optional 406Link testing subscription
  • Global Coverage using the 3 satellite constellations of COSPAS-SARSAT, which sends your distress message directly to Search and Rescue agencies worldwide without the need for a rescue monitoring center
  • A bright LED Strobe light as well as an Infrared Strobe light ensures multiple visual signals to rescuers

Schedule a Safety Check

  1. In the Safety app, choose Safety Check, select a reason and duration of up to 24 hours, then choose contacts.
  2. Start the check. At the scheduled time, you receive a 60-second alert to mark yourself OK, begin sharing, or call emergency services.

If the phone is off or has lost signal at check-in time, the check remains active and may share the last known location. That does not guarantee a fresh location while offline.

Configure Emergency SOS separately

To configure SOS, go to Settings > Safety & emergency > Emergency SOS > Start setup. Set the emergency number for the place where you will use the phone, add emergency-sharing contacts, choose what information to share, and allow the Safety app location access while using it. Google says Emergency SOS is available on Android 12 and later, but it does not work in airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on. Controls can differ between phones.

Emergency SOS and Emergency Sharing are not the same as Android’s Emergency Location Service (ELS). ELS sends location data to an emergency-services endpoint when you call or text an emergency number; it does not send that location to Google for you to view. It is not a live-location link to friends or family. See Android’s ELS overview.

McMurdo FastFind 220 Personal Locator Beacon - US Programming
  • This Personal Locator Beacon is pre programmed for registration with the US country code. Whilst it will function anywhere around the world, the initial point of contact during an emergency situation would be the US Search and Rescue authorities with whom the PLB would be registered.
  • If you require registration outside of the US, please purchase our alternative listing for 'McMurdo Fast Find 220 PLB - Programmed for Rest of World '. We include at no charge a reprogramming service on this alternative listing to ensure the device can be registered in the country of your choice.
  • Registering your Personal Locator Beacon is required by law in most countries. Registering is very important because should your beacon ever be activated, it is how Search and Rescue Teams will know who you are, and contacts provided may be able to supply information about your specific travel plans. In the absence of this information, it may take longer for a search-and-rescue operation to begin.
  • PLBs have been proven, tried and tested in some of the world's most remote locations and treacherous conditions. Even in extreme conditions and situations, the FastFind 220 activates easily. Just deploy the antenna, pull the anti-tamper seal and press the ON button.
  • This PLB should only be used in situations of grave and imminent danger to life. False alerts endanger lives and cause expensive disruption to Search and Rescue services. Deliberate misuse of the device could result in a penalty.

Share your location from an iPhone

Apple offers ongoing sharing, route ETA sharing and check-ins for different situations. The controls below are documented in Apple’s location-sharing guide.

Share Live Location with a trusted person

  1. In Find My, turn on Share My Location, open People, and add the person you trust.
  2. Choose how long to share: one hour, until the end of the day, or indefinitely.

You can also start sharing in Messages. People you share with can see your live location in Find My, Maps, Contacts or Messages and can get directions. In a group conversation, everyone in that group can see the shared location. For Live Location shared from Find My or Messages, both people need an iPhone with iOS 15 or later.

Share an ETA while navigating

When following driving, cycling or walking directions in Maps, share your ETA with a contact. The recipient gets your Live Location and the stops along the route you are navigating.

ACR ResQLink View RLS PLB, Satellite SOS GPS Personal Locator Beacon - 2932
  • RLS (Return Link Service) confirms that Search and Rescue has received the emergency distress signal, alerting the beacon owner.
  • Digital display with infrared strobe for clear visibility and enhanced signal detection in emergency situations.
  • No subscription required, 5-year battery life, and 28+ hours of operational life for reliable performance in emergencies.
  • GPS, Galileo GNSS, and MEOSAR compatibility provide global coverage for reliable and accurate positioning in any emergency situation.
  • Built-in buoyancy, compact and lightweight design, with a multifunction clip system for easy attachment and portability during outdoor adventures.

Use Check In for a destination or activity

Start a Check In in Messages with a trusted contact and choose a destination or activity. Check In does not continuously share your location by default. If you are unexpectedly delayed and do not respond, it can notify the contact with your current location, network signal and battery details. You can choose to include additional information, such as the route you traveled. If a Check In fails, shared location may remain visible briefly after the check-in ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review or stop sharing

Stop sharing through Find My, Maps or Messages. Apple says stopping sharing with a person in one app also stops it across apps. If personal safety is a concern, Safety Check can quickly review or stop sharing. Deleting the Find My app alone does not stop sharing that was already set up.

What works without cellular or Wi-Fi?

Do not assume ordinary live sharing, a map ETA or a scheduled check-in can deliver a fresh location when the phone is offline. Android real-time Emergency Sharing explicitly needs internet access, and a check-in may have only a last known location if the phone has lost signal.

Find My location sharing by satellite

Apple documents satellite location sharing in Find My on supported iPhones outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Before leaving coverage, turn on Share My Location on the iPhone you will carry and add the intended people in Find My. You must already be sharing with each recipient there. The phone also needs an active SIM, and the feature is unavailable in some countries or regions.

To send a location, you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon; heavy foliage and other obstructions can prevent a connection. Sending can take a few minutes, and location updates are limited to once every 15 minutes. You cannot see your friend’s location in Find My during the satellite-sharing process, while recipients can view your most recent satellite location for up to seven days. See Apple’s iOS 26 User Guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emergency SOS via satellite is a separate feature

Emergency SOS via satellite is for contacting emergency responders when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable; configured emergency contacts may also receive notifications and information. Apple lists iPhone 14 or later and regional minimum software requirements, and says international visitors can use the feature in supported regions, subject to exceptions for phones purchased in certain markets and regional approval. Check Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite requirements for your model and destination. It is not a promise of satellite coverage everywhere or a replacement for emergency services or a dedicated satellite communicator.
