To share a place or your current location from Apple Maps, open Maps, select a place or map point, tap the Share button, and choose where to send it. That sends a location snapshot—not a live feed of your movements. For trip progress, use Maps’ Share ETA feature during navigation; for ongoing location sharing, use Find My or Messages.
Send a place or current location from Maps
- Share a selected place: Open Maps, tap a place on the map or a search result, then tap the Share button at the top of its place card. Choose an app or contact, such as Messages or Mail, to send it. Apple also lets you touch and hold a place, then choose Share Location. See Apple’s Maps instructions.
- Send your current location without opening Maps: Touch and hold the Maps icon on the Home Screen, then tap Send My Location.
The recipient can view the shared place or pin, but it does not update as you move. If you want someone to follow a journey or your ongoing location, use one of the options below.

Share your trip progress and ETA in Maps
Share ETA works while you are navigating to a destination. Apple supports driving, cycling, and walking directions for this feature.
- Search for your destination in Maps and tap Go to start directions.
- Open the route card at the bottom of the screen and tap Share ETA.
- Select one or more contacts. Maps can update the ETA automatically if a major delay affects the trip.
To end sharing before you arrive, open the route card, tap Sharing with, then tap Stop Sharing ETA below the relevant contact. Apple also says a contact associated with a pinned place can receive your ETA automatically when you start turn-by-turn navigation to that place; the recipient can view your location, route, and ETA until you arrive. If Share ETA does not appear, check Settings > Apps > Maps and make sure it is enabled. Feature availability varies by country or region. Recipients on supported iOS or iPadOS versions may get a Maps notification and track progress in Maps; people on earlier versions may receive an iMessage notification, while people using other mobile devices receive an SMS. Carrier text and data charges may apply.
Share an ongoing Live Location through Find My or Messages
Choose this when someone needs to see your location change over time, rather than just view a pin or follow one active trip. In Find My, turn on Share My Location, add the person, and choose how long to share—including a custom duration or end time where offered. To stop sharing with one person, open their entry in the People list and stop sharing. To hide your location from everyone, turn off Share My Location.

Messages can also share an ongoing location from a conversation: tap Add > Location > Share, choose a duration, then send. Apple describes the duration choices as one hour, until the end of the day, or indefinitely; availability and minimum software requirements vary. A location pin sent in a conversation is not the same as ongoing sharing and will not update as you move.

Review privacy and fix location-sharing problems
- Check the duration first: Before starting an ongoing share, confirm whether it is for an hour, the rest of the day, indefinitely, or a custom period. You can stop sharing through the Apple app you used.
- Know how Apple’s controls interact: Apple says stopping sharing with a person in one app also stops sharing with that person across apps. Find My provides both per-person and global controls.
- Check Location Services: If a recipient cannot see your location in Find My, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is enabled for Find My. Apple’s Location Services guidance also explains that background location access can prompt periodic reminders and show a map.
- Use Safety Check if needed: Apple’s iPhone overview describes Safety Check as a way to review or quickly stop sharing when personal safety is at risk. See Apple’s location-sharing overview.
