The safest way to share your location temporarily is to choose one named recipient, set a definite duration, and verify that the share has ended when the task is over. Use a live share only when the other person needs movement updates. For a meeting point or pickup address, send a one-time location pin instead. When you finish, stop that individual share in the app; closing the app, disabling Timeline, or hiding updates is not the same as ending access.
These controls limit who receives your location and how long the platform keeps sending updates. They do not make the share invisible to the recipient: Apple warns that people you previously shared with may notice when sharing stops, and some older software can display a notification.

What “private” location sharing actually means
In this context, private means narrowing the audience and the duration. You select a person rather than publishing a link broadly, and you select an end time rather than leaving a share running until you remember to cancel it. The recipient can still see the information the service provides while the share is active.

Avoid treating a phone-wide privacy switch as a substitute for the individual share control. Turning off Location Services can disrupt navigation, emergency features, weather, and other apps, while turning off Google Timeline does not end Google Maps Location Sharing. Use the sharing screen to stop the specific person.

There are three useful patterns. A timed live share is appropriate when another person needs to follow your movement. A one-time pin is better when the person only needs a place. Stopping one recipient is the right cleanup action when the trip or check-in is over. These choices are more precise than making your entire phone unavailable to location services.
Decide whether you need live tracking
Use a live share for a journey or safety check-in
Live location is useful when someone needs to follow your progress, such as meeting you while you travel or confirming that you reached home. Select a recipient and a duration before sending. Both Find My and Google Maps provide a duration choice for real-time sharing.
Choose the shortest duration that covers the activity. If a journey takes longer, you can start another share; leaving an indefinite share active “just in case” creates unnecessary exposure. Before you send, read the recipient name and the selected end time aloud or review them on screen. A last-second check catches the common mistake of choosing the wrong contact or an open-ended option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a one-time pin for a place
If the recipient only needs a restaurant, entrance, parking spot, or pickup point, send your current location once. A pin communicates where you are at that moment without creating a continuing stream of location updates. On iPhone, Messages supports sharing a current location separately from Find My’s duration-based live sharing.
A pin is also easier to explain: it represents the place at the moment it was sent, not your route afterward. If you move to another entrance or the meeting point changes, send a new pin rather than converting a simple meetup into a live share. A pin does not provide the progress, battery, or arrival information associated with some live-sharing features.
How to share privately on an iPhone with Find My
Find My is the appropriate iPhone control when another person needs your location to update for a limited period.
- Open Find My and select the People tab.
- Start a location share and choose the specific person. Select a contact rather than creating a generally accessible link.
- Choose how long the share should last. Pick the shortest period that covers the activity; you can make a new share later if plans change.
- Confirm the recipient and duration before sending. Check the People list afterward so you know which individual share is active.
Menu names can vary slightly with iOS releases, account settings, or device language. If your screen differs, look for the People tab and the duration selector inside Find My rather than changing system Location Services.
For a family trip or caregiving check-in, repeat this review for every person shown in People. A share to one relative does not automatically mean that other relatives can see it, and stopping one person does not stop the others. Treat the list as the authoritative record of who currently has access.
Stop sharing with one person
- Open Find My and go to People.
- Select the person whose access should end.
- Choose Stop Sharing My Location and confirm if prompted.
After you stop, Apple says your location disappears from that person’s Find My, Maps, Contacts, and Messages views. The person may notice the change, and older operating systems may show a Messages notification that sharing stopped. Do not promise that ending a share is silent.
If the purpose was a single ride or appointment, stop the share as soon as you arrive rather than waiting until the next day. If you want to continue sharing with another person, remove only the finished contact and leave the remaining, intentional shares in place.

Hide your location from everyone only when that is your real goal
To stop sharing globally, open Find My, select Me, and turn off Share My Location. This affects every person, not just one contact, so it is the wrong choice when you want to keep sharing with others. Apple also documents a hiding or pausing behavior that automatically resumes the next day; it is therefore unsuitable as a permanent end to a share.
A global setting can be useful when you deliberately want nobody in your Find My sharing group to receive updates, but it is a blunt tool. It can create confusion for people who were supposed to remain included. For a single finished trip, use the recipient’s own Stop Sharing control.
How to send a one-time location from iPhone Messages
For a meetup point, use the current-location option in Messages instead of starting a Find My duration share. Open the conversation with the intended person, use the location-sharing option, and send your current location. The recipient receives a point representing where you were when you sent it, rather than a continuously updating route.
Because a pin is a snapshot, send another pin if you move to a different entrance or meeting place. Do not assume that a pin gives the same live-progress information as Find My; it does not. If the recipient asks where you are now after you have moved, send a fresh pin or deliberately start a timed live share.
How to share privately in Google Maps
Share with a named contact
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Location Sharing, then start a new share.
- Choose a duration rather than leaving the end time open.
- Select the intended person. Google’s contact-based flow requires that person to have a Google Account or Gmail address.
- Review the recipient and duration, then send.
A named-contact share is preferable when you need audience control because access is tied to the selected person. Review the Location Sharing list after sending to confirm that only the intended contact is present. If an old recipient remains listed, stop that share separately; starting a new share does not necessarily remove previous recipients.

That is why closing Maps is not a privacy control. The duration and the Stop action in Location Sharing determine whether access continues.
Use a link only when you accept bearer access
Google Maps can create a link for someone who does not have a Google Account. Anyone who obtains that link can access your real-time location for up to 24 hours. Treat the URL like a key: send it directly, do not post it in a public channel, and do not forward it beyond the intended recipient. If you need tighter control, ask the person to use a Google Account and choose the named-contact method instead.
A link is not limited to the person you had in mind. A forwarded message, shared screenshot containing the URL, or copied link can give another person access during that window. If you realize the link went to the wrong audience, return to Location Sharing and stop it rather than relying on the 24-hour limit alone.
Stop an individual Google Maps share
- Return to Google Maps and open the profile menu.
- Tap Location Sharing.
- Select the person whose access should end.
- Tap Stop and verify that the person is no longer listed as an active recipient.
Closing Maps does not end the share. Turning off Google Timeline does not end it either; Location Sharing can continue while Timeline is disabled. Timeline concerns location history, whereas Location Sharing controls current access to your position.

Stopping one person
- Open the Google Location Sharing settings path above.
- Review the active recipient list.
- Tap the control beside the person you want to remove and choose Stop.
- Reopen the list to confirm that the recipient is no longer active.
Why the Use Location Sharing switch is only a pause
The Use Location Sharing switch pauses location updates but leaves existing shares in place. If you turn the switch on again, those shares may resume. Use the per-person Stop control when the activity is finished or when you no longer want that person to have access.
This distinction matters when troubleshooting a phone that appears to have stopped updating. A paused share can look inactive to you while the recipient relationship still exists. Do not describe the pause as deletion, and do not assume that toggling it off and on cleans up the recipient list.
What the recipient may learn
Live sharing can expose more than a dot on a map. Google Maps says a recipient may see your name, profile photo, your device’s recent location even when Google apps are not open, and battery level or charging status. A recipient can also configure an arrival or departure notification, which may reveal when you reach or leave a place.
These details can answer practical questions such as whether your phone is charging or whether you have likely arrived, so choose a recipient you trust. A person who receives the share is not limited to a single static coordinate while the live share remains active.
Location Sharing operates even when Google Timeline is turned off. Timeline records and Location Sharing are separate features, so disabling one does not cancel the other.
On Apple devices, stopping a share removes your location from the recipient’s Find My, Maps, Contacts, and Messages views, but the recipient may notice that the relationship changed. Plan conversations accordingly if the share was part of a trip, caregiving arrangement, or safety check-in. Stopping access is a control action, not a guarantee that the other person will not notice it.
Comparison of the main options
| Option | Audience control | Time control | What it provides | How to end it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Find My | Named person | Select a duration | Live location updates | Find My > People > person > Stop Sharing My Location |
| iPhone Messages current location | Message recipient | One-time snapshot | Current-location pin | No ongoing share to stop |
| Google Maps named contact | Named person with Google Account or Gmail | Select a duration | Real-time location plus recipient-visible status details | Maps > Location Sharing > person > Stop |
| Google Maps link | Anyone who obtains the link | Up to 24 hours | Real-time location for link holders | Return to Location Sharing and stop the share |
| Android Google Location Sharing switch | Existing recipients remain listed | Pauses updates; does not end shares | Temporarily stops update transmission | Stop beside each person in Google Location Sharing |
The key comparison is not iPhone versus Android alone. It is named recipient versus bearer link, timed access versus a manually managed share, and a live feed versus a one-time point. Pick the row that matches the actual need, then use its documented end action.
Common mistakes and the correct fix
Leaving a share open-ended
An open-ended share can continue after the meeting, commute, or check-in has finished. Start again with a selected duration. If the share is already active, open the recipient list and stop it manually.
Sending a link when the audience must be limited
A link can be copied or forwarded. Use a named contact when the service supports one, and send a link only when the recipient cannot use an account-based flow.
Assuming that closing an app ends sharing
App closure is not the documented stop action for Find My or Google Maps. Use the platform’s People or Location Sharing screen and confirm the recipient list.

Assuming a pause is permanent
Android’s Use Location Sharing switch can pause updates while preserving the share. Turning it back on may resume transmission. Stop the individual share when you need a definite end.
Promising that stopping is invisible
Apple specifically warns that people you previously shared with may notice when you stop. Older systems may show a Messages notification. If the change could affect a safety plan or family arrangement, communicate clearly instead of promising that no alert or visible change will occur.

The Bottom Line
For bounded location sharing, choose a named recipient, set the shortest useful duration, and use a one-time pin when live tracking is unnecessary. When the task ends, stop that person from Find My or Location Sharing and verify the list. A pause, closed app, disabled Timeline, or global location switch is not a reliable substitute for ending the individual share.
