Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, make sure the owners’ Apple Account contact details are saved in each other’s Contacts, then have the recipient select the network. The connected device’s owner approves the prompt.
What you need before sharing
- Both devices must have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on and be near each other.
- Each person must be signed in to their own Apple Account. Save each person’s Apple Account email address or phone number in the other person’s Contacts.
- The device supplying the password must be unlocked and already connected to the Wi-Fi network.
- Apple’s current instructions say both devices should be running the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS.
- Turn Personal Hotspot off on either device if it is on.
Apple describes this process for nearby Apple devices. If these conditions are not met, you can still join by entering the network password manually.

Share a Wi-Fi password from an iPhone or iPad
- On both devices, open Settings and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on.
- Confirm that each person’s Apple Account email address or phone number is saved in the other person’s Contacts.
- Keep the devices close together. Make sure the sharing iPhone or iPad is unlocked and connected to the Wi-Fi network; switch off Personal Hotspot if it is enabled.
- On the device that needs to join, open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the network name.
- When the sharing device displays the prompt, tap Share Password, then tap Done.
The recipient should then be able to join the selected network. For Apple’s instructions and troubleshooting, see How to share your Wi-Fi password from your iPhone or iPad.

Share a saved password from a Mac
Keep the Mac unlocked and connected to the network. On the recipient’s Apple device, select that network in Wi-Fi settings. The Mac owner can approve the password-sharing prompt when it appears.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If automatic sharing is not available, the Mac’s Passwords app offers alternatives. Open Passwords, choose Wi-Fi, and select the network to reveal or copy its saved password. The app can also display a network QR code for someone else to scan. Apple’s Mac Passwords guide documents these options.
If the sharing prompt does not appear
- Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices, the devices are nearby, and Personal Hotspot is off.
- Verify that both people are signed in to their Apple Accounts and that each person’s account email address or phone number is in the other person’s Contacts.
- Confirm that the sharing device is unlocked and connected to the exact network the recipient selected.
- Restart both devices and try the sharing steps again.
- If automatic sharing still does not work, enter the Wi-Fi password manually. On a Mac, you can instead reveal or copy the saved password in Passwords or show its QR code.
Apple notes that an organization may restrict Wi-Fi password sharing on devices or apps managed through a device management service. If the devices meet the usual requirements but sharing remains unavailable on a managed device, contact the organization’s administrator.

- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Wi-Fi password sharing is not Personal Hotspot
Wi-Fi password sharing lets another device join a saved Wi-Fi network. Personal Hotspot shares an iPhone’s cellular internet connection instead. Apple says Personal Hotspot should be off during its Wi-Fi password-sharing process; an iPhone also cannot join a Wi-Fi network and relay that same Wi-Fi connection through Personal Hotspot. See Apple’s guide to sharing an internet connection from an iPhone for the separate hotspot feature.

Apple’s security guide says the requesting device advertises over Bluetooth Low Energy that it wants the Wi-Fi password. A nearby Apple device that has the password can respond. The requestor’s contact information is required, and the requestor proves their identity through a process similar to AirDrop. Apple summarizes the handoff this way: “After identity is proven, the grantor sends the requestor the passcode, which can be used to join the network.” Read Apple’s Wi-Fi password sharing security guide, published December 19, 2024.
