Give contractors named, limited access through the service they need; give AI agents a separate workload identity and only the tools and permissions required for their task. Keep credentials out of messages, prompts, code, logs, and persistent memory. Set an end point for access, monitor its use, and revoke it when the work ends or exposure is suspected.
Why people and agents need different access
A contractor is a person whose access should be attributable to them. An AI agent is a software workload whose actions should be attributable to its own identity and tied to the user or system operating it. Treating both as holders of the same human credential obscures who did what and makes access harder to end cleanly.

NIST authors Bill Fisher and Ryan Galluzzo make the accountability point directly in their August 27, 2026, Cybersecurity Insights article: “Sharing credentials – between humans or agents – creates accountability gaps that can result in any number of security, privacy, and legal issues.”

How to give a contractor access
Prefer an individual account or delegated access
Create a named account for the contractor in the service they need, or use that service’s delegation mechanism. Give the account only the permissions and resources needed for the engagement, and set an expiry when available. This keeps activity attributable to the individual and lets you remove that person’s access without changing other users’ credentials.
#1 Best Overall
- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
For GitHub, do not hand over your personal access token. GitHub advises against sharing personal access tokens and recommends a GitHub App when accessing GitHub on behalf of an organization or another user. If a secret genuinely must be shared, GitHub Docs recommends using a dedicated password manager. A shared vault should still have individual membership and a clear offboarding process.
Use a controlled channel for unavoidable shared credentials
Do not send passwords, tokens, private keys, or recovery codes through ordinary email, chat, tickets, source code, or command-line text. When sharing cannot be avoided, use an approved credential-sharing system rather than pasting the secret into a message. For API access, issue a credential designed for that integration, with narrow scopes and an expiry where supported.

How to give an AI agent access
Give the agent its own identity
Do not give an agent a human’s primary account, developer token, SSH key, cloud CLI profile, or production credential just because it is convenient. NIST recommends that agents have unique identifiers, credentials, and entitlements bound to the user or system operating them. It also describes dynamic, tightly scoped, audience-restricted credentials as achievable with existing standards and practices.

Keep secrets out of prompts, persistent memory, source files, tool arguments, logs, and debug traces. Instead, provide credentials at runtime through a secrets manager or a platform-native secret mechanism. Prefer per-tool or per-server credentials, narrow OAuth scopes, ephemeral tokens, and task-scoped access over a credential that can reach unrelated systems.

- Protection against brute force password attacks - Data is automatically erased after 6 unsuccessful access attempts. The data of the USB flash drive type c encryption with dual connectors is destroyed and the cryptographic drive is reset.
- Durable dual-layer waterproof design* — Protects the crypto reader from bumps, drops, run-in and immersion in water. The electronics are protected by a hardened internal case. Rubberized silicone outer case provides a final layer of protection.
- Auto-Lock —The cryptographic key automatically encrypts all data and locks when removed from a PC/Mac or when screen protection or "computer lock" is enabled.
- Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.
Limit what the agent can do around the credential
Only enable the tools and resources required for the current task. Restrict filesystem and network access, sandbox code execution, and require explicit human approval for destructive, financial, or externally visible actions. A credential’s scope is only one boundary: the agent’s available tools and execution environment also determine what it can affect.
For MCP deployments, OWASP advises scoped per-server credentials and short-lived tokens. Review tool descriptions and schemas because malicious or changed tool instructions can manipulate agent behavior. A local transport such as stdio is not, by itself, a process sandbox.

Choose a handoff method by recipient
| Approach | Best fit | How access is delivered | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Named service account or delegated access | A contractor using a service | Access is granted to the person’s own account in the service | Permissions, resource limits, expiry, and whether activity is attributable to that person |
| Password manager or controlled credential sharing | A contractor when a credential must be shared | The secret is shared through a managed credential system, not pasted into a message | Individual membership, auditability, and how access will be removed at offboarding |
| Workload identity, IAM, or secrets manager | An AI agent or automated tool | The agent receives a task-appropriate credential at runtime | Identity binding, scope, lifetime, audit trail, and isolation from prompts and logs |
These categories can overlap in some platforms, but they are not interchangeable by default. Compare any option on recipient identity, permission granularity, expiry and revocation, auditability, runtime integration, separation of development from production, and the risk that credentials enter prompts, logs, memory, command lines, or untrusted tool calls.

A handoff and offboarding sequence
- Identify the recipient. Decide whether access is for a person, an agent, or a tool server; do not reuse one credential across them.
- Create separate, narrow access. Grant the smallest useful set of permissions, resources, and actions for the work.
- Set a time boundary. Use an expiry or short lease where supported, and make sure dynamic credentials can be revoked when they are no longer needed.
- Deliver through the right mechanism. Use an approved credential-sharing system for an unavoidable human handoff; inject agent credentials at runtime from a secrets manager or platform-native mechanism.
- Monitor and retain attribution. Keep enough audit information to connect access to the specific contractor, workload, or agent.
- End access deliberately. At completion, revoke it; if exposure is suspected, revoke and rotate the affected secret, then inspect activity logs.
