These are separate workflows: add a capture source to show your own content; configure Media Share in the Streamlabs dashboard and add its widget to accept viewer requests.
Choose what “share media” means
- Show your screen, an app, or a game: Add a capture source in Streamlabs Desktop. You control what appears in the scene.
- Let viewers request videos: Enable Media Share in the Streamlabs dashboard, then add its widget in Desktop. Requests and playback are subject to the feature’s settings and moderation.
Show your display, an app, or a game
Open Streamlabs Desktop and use Sources > +. Choose the source that matches what you want viewers to see, select the target when prompted, and confirm. Streamlabs’ general Desktop guide, dated July 22, 2026, describes these capture choices; labels and availability can vary by installed release.

The capture options are not guaranteed to behave identically on every computer. The reviewed guides do not provide a complete operating-system compatibility matrix. If the chosen source does not show the intended content, try another documented capture option and verify it in the scene preview before going live.

Set up viewer-requested videos with Media Share
Media Share is a separate widget, configured through the Streamlabs web dashboard and then added as a source in Streamlabs Desktop. Streamlabs’ guide, originally published March 24, 2016 and last updated December 18, 2025, documents links to public YouTube videos. It does not establish support for other services or for private or unlisted videos.

- Open the Streamlabs dashboard, go to All Widgets > Media Share, and enable the feature.
- Choose the moderation behavior. Auto-show can put submitted videos on stream without a moderator screening each request first; use it only if trusted moderators can filter requests beforehand. Otherwise choose a more controlled moderation flow.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, go to Sources > +, select Media Share, and add the source.
- Adjust the widget’s settings, then size and position it in the scene. Preview the scene so you can see how a video will appear.
Allow requests through Cloudbot chat
If viewers should submit requests in chat, also enable the Cloudbot Media Share module. Streamlabs documents the command format !request <youtube url>. Enable the widget, add Media Share as a source (or use the widget URL in other streaming software), and keep the Media Share tab available in recent events. The Cloudbot article was last updated July 8, 2026. Request handling depends on the feature settings and moderation flow; do not assume every request will play automatically.
Make sure viewers can hear the media
Showing video and capturing its sound are separate checks. A capture source can display content without the intended audio reaching the stream, so inspect the audio mixer and test before your broadcast.

- Computer audio: If the default audio device is not already configured, Streamlabs describes adding Audio Output Capture. Do not add the same default audio device twice; duplicated capture can cause echo.
- Audio from one application only: Add Application Audio Capture for the intended app, then go to Settings > Audio and disable Desktop Audio. Streamlabs says this prevents unrelated computer audio from being included.
- Windows: Streamlabs’ quick-start guidance says to align Desktop Audio with the default device selected in Windows Sound Settings.
- macOS: The quick-start guide notes that desktop audio may require audio-routing software configured as a Mic/Aux source. The required setup can depend on the macOS and Streamlabs versions in use.
- Narration: Add a microphone separately if you want to speak. A microphone is not required just to display a screen or Media Share video.
For a quick check, play the intended content and watch the mixer for activity; make a short test recording or preview before the main stream. Confirm that the desired source registers and that unrelated audio is not being captured.
Check privacy and moderation before going live
- With Display Capture, viewers may see private windows, account details, notifications, or anything else visible on that monitor. Close or hide anything you do not intend to show.
- With Window Capture, confirm the selected window is the intended application before streaming.
- For Media Share auto-show, rely on trusted moderators who can screen requests before they appear live. Review who has moderation or shared access.
- Preview the scene and check both the visual layers and audio before starting the broadcast.
Troubleshooting
The capture source is blank or shows the wrong content
Reopen the source settings, check the selected display, window, or game, and confirm the intended target is open. If it still does not appear, try another suitable documented capture source and verify the result in the preview. Source behavior can differ by setup.

The stream shows the video but viewers cannot hear it
Check the mixer and the output or application audio source. For one-app capture, confirm Application Audio Capture targets the right app and Desktop Audio is disabled as directed by Streamlabs. On macOS, desktop audio may need routing software configured as Mic/Aux.
The audio echoes or includes unrelated sounds
Look for duplicate capture of the default audio device and remove the extra source. If you intended to capture only one app, disable Desktop Audio in Settings > Audio; otherwise the full computer output may also be included.

Media Share requests do not appear as expected
Confirm Media Share is enabled in the dashboard, the widget is added as a Desktop source, and its moderation settings match the behavior you expect. For chat requests, check that the Cloudbot Media Share module is enabled and the Media Share tab is available in recent events. The documented request format is !request <youtube url>.
