How to Share Large Files Between Phones and Computers Without Losing Quality

Send the original file—not a compressed preview—and choose a transfer method that fits your devices, file size, distance and need to preserve media details.

To keep a photo or video at its original quality, transfer the original file instead of sending a compressed message preview. Nearby Apple devices can use AirDrop; supported Android phones can share with Apple devices through Quick Share, and other Android phones can use Google’s QR download workflow. For Windows, Phone Link is convenient for eligible devices but cannot transfer a file larger than 512 MB. When devices are apart, use a download-link workflow; for an offline handoff, use compatible external storage.

What “without losing quality” means

A transfer preserves quality when the receiver gets the original file rather than a resized, recompressed or lower-resolution copy. This distinction matters most for large videos and high-resolution photos: a messaging app may share a preview or create a smaller version, while a file-transfer workflow can send the file itself. Do not assume a route is lossless merely because it is called “sharing”; check whether it sends the original file and, for media, whether it also carries the information attached to it.

Image and video fidelity are not the only things that may matter. A photo or video can carry associated details such as location, captions, metadata and edit history. Apple’s Photos sharing flow offers an All Photos Data option for sending original-format video details and associated data with AirDrop. That setting is useful when those attributes matter, not just the visible picture or sound. See Apple’s instructions for sharing long videos on iPhone.

File size, device compatibility, distance and download availability determine which method is practical. The options below preserve the file by using a direct transfer or a downloadable original; no comparable official speed figures are available for these workflows, so actual transfer time will depend on the devices and connection.

Choose a method by device and situation

Situation Best-supported route Key limits or conditions
Nearby iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Vision Pro to another Apple device AirDrop Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; the recipient accepts. In Photos, enable All Photos Data if associated original data matters.
Nearby supported Android phone to an iPhone, iPad or Mac Quick Share with AirDrop Requires a supported Android model. The Apple recipient sets AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 Minutes and accepts the request.
Android phone without AirDrop interoperability to an Apple device Quick Share QR-code download Both devices need internet. Google documents 10 GB per 24 hours, 1,000 files per session and a 24-hour download window.
Eligible Android phone and Windows PC, with a file under the per-file limit Phone Link drag and drop Up to 100 files at a time; no file may exceed 512 MB. Folders and cloud-backed files are excluded.
Large iPhone video to someone who is not nearby Mail Drop The recipient has 30 days to download the attachment.
Devices cannot use a suitable network or download-link workflow Compatible external storage Check the phone connector or adapter, drive compatibility and transfer method before relying on it.

These limits come from the current support pages for Google Quick Share, Microsoft Phone Link and Apple Mail Drop. Device eligibility can vary by model and software version, so check the linked instructions if a feature or setting is missing.

Send a large file between nearby Apple devices

Use AirDrop for a nearby transfer

Apple identifies AirDrop as the straightforward way to send a large video from an iPhone to a nearby iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Vision Pro. The sender and recipient need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, and the recipient must accept the incoming transfer. This is a device-to-device sharing route rather than an email attachment that the recipient must retrieve later.

  1. On both devices, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Keep the devices nearby while the transfer is being offered and accepted.
  2. On the iPhone, open Photos and select the video or other item to share.
3. Open the sharing options. If you need the original format and associated video information, turn on All Photos Data before sending.
  4. Choose AirDrop, select the intended nearby recipient, and wait for that person to accept the transfer on their device.
  5. Have the recipient open the transferred file and confirm it is the item expected before deleting the source copy.

The Photos option is important when the recipient needs more than the visible content. Apple describes it as a way to include original-format video details, metadata, location, edit history and captions. If you only need the media itself, the option may not be necessary; if preserving attached attributes is part of the requirement, check it before sending rather than assuming every sharing route carries them.

Transfer from Android to an Apple device

Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability

Some Android phones can send directly to Apple devices through Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability. Google’s current support information lists Pixel 8a or later and certain devices from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion and Motorola. The phrase “certain devices” matters: brand alone does not establish that a particular model supports the feature. Consult Google’s current device and setup instructions if the option does not appear.

  1. On the Apple receiving device, open AirDrop settings and set visibility to Everyone for 10 Minutes.
  2. On the supported Android phone, select the file or files and open Quick Share.
  3. Choose the Apple device when it appears as a nearby recipient.
  4. Accept the request on the Apple device and let the transfer finish before moving either device away.

The Apple recipient’s visibility setting is temporary, so it is not a permanent change to who can discover the device. If the Apple device does not appear, first check that its visibility is set correctly and that the Android model is on Google’s supported list; do not infer incompatibility from the device brand alone.

Use the QR-code route when direct interoperability is unavailable

For Android models that cannot use the direct Quick Share/AirDrop route, Google documents a QR workflow. The Android sender creates a QR code, and the Apple recipient scans it and downloads the files in a browser. Unlike a nearby direct handoff, this fallback requires internet access on both devices.

Google states that files shared to Apple devices through this route are end-to-end encrypted, are hosted by Google for 24 hours, and do not count against the sender’s personal Google Drive storage. Its documented limits are 10 GB shared to Apple devices per 24 hours, 1,000 files per share session and up to 20 Apple receivers at a time. These are limits for the documented Google workflow, not universal limits for all Quick Share transfers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On Android, select the files and start Quick Share’s QR-code sharing option.
  2. Show the generated code to the Apple-device recipient.
  3. On the Apple device, scan the code and follow the browser prompt to download the files.
  4. Complete the download within the 24-hour availability period and verify the downloaded files before the sender removes their copies.

If the QR code cannot be opened or the download is interrupted, check internet access on both ends and whether the 24-hour window or the documented quotas have been reached. For a large transfer, the recipient should have enough available storage to save the downloads.

Google’s security announcement on November 20, 2025 described the initial rollout as beginning with the Pixel 10 family. That announcement is a dated launch statement, not today’s full compatibility list; Google’s current support page is the more useful source for checking whether a particular phone is supported. Read the Google Security Blog announcement alongside the live help page rather than treating the launch models as the final list.

Move files between an Android phone and a Windows PC

Use Phone Link when the file fits its limits

Phone Link supports content transfers between a Windows PC and eligible Android devices. Its drag-and-drop feature can move up to 100 files at a time, but each individual file must be 512 MB or smaller. It does not support folders or cloud-backed files in this drag-and-drop workflow. Microsoft also notes that the receiving app may not accept every file type.

  1. Check Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup steps for your Windows version, Android device and feature. Requirements differ by feature and device.
  2. Connect the phone and PC through Phone Link using the setup process Microsoft documents for your devices.
  3. Open the relevant phone content in Phone Link and drag the selected file or files to the PC location shown by the app, or use the supported direction for the transfer you need.
  4. Keep each file at or below 512 MB, select no more than 100 at a time, and transfer individual files rather than folders or cloud-backed items.
  5. Open the result on the receiving device. If its default app does not accept the file type, try an appropriate app that supports that format.

Phone Link is a fit for supported devices and files within its documented ceiling, not a general-purpose answer for every large video. If a single file exceeds 512 MB, choose another route rather than splitting or recompressing it merely to fit the drag-and-drop limit. If the feature is absent, Microsoft’s live page is the place to verify the applicable Windows and Android requirements.

Send a large iPhone video to someone remotely

Use Mail Drop when email is the convenient handoff

When the recipient is not nearby, Apple documents Mail Drop for large video attachments sent from iPhone. The recipient has 30 days to download the attachment. This gives the other person a defined retrieval window instead of requiring both devices to be together for a direct transfer. Apple’s Mail Drop limits page describes the download period.

  1. Start an email with the video attached using the iPhone workflow supported by Apple.
  2. Send the message and let Mail Drop handle the large attachment when the option is offered.
  3. Tell the recipient to download the video within 30 days, then confirm they have saved it before relying on the email as the only copy.

A download link is only useful if the recipient can retrieve the file before its availability ends. Mail Drop’s stated period is 30 days; do not assume the attachment remains downloadable indefinitely. If your situation is not an iPhone-to-remote-recipient email transfer, no current official US retail listing published by another cloud or email provider establishes a comparable service limit, so check that provider’s current sharing terms directly.

Use a cloud or server workflow when both sides need remote access

Apple also documents moving files from iPhone to a storage device, server or cloud. A cloud or server workflow can suit a transfer when sender and recipient are in different places or need access at different times, but the exact upload limit, download window, storage quota and privacy terms depend on the service. They are not interchangeable with Google’s specific 24-hour QR-code workflow or Apple’s Mail Drop period.

For remote sharing, upload the original file rather than exporting a smaller copy, then share access using the provider’s controls. Before sending the link, check that the recipient can open it, has permission to download and has sufficient device storage. For private files, review who has access and avoid a public link if the service lets you restrict recipients. Apple’s guide to transferring files from iPhone to a storage device, server or cloud explains its supported options.

Make an offline handoff with external storage

A compatible external storage device is useful when a network transfer is unavailable or the devices cannot be together online. Apple documents transferring files from iPhone to storage devices. The practical question is whether the phone can connect to the particular drive, directly or through an adapter, and whether the drive can store and expose the file in a form both devices can read.

  • Check the phone’s connector and whether the storage device needs an adapter or additional power.
  • Confirm that the drive and phone support a compatible file system and that the drive has enough free space.
  • Copy the original file to the drive, then connect it to the receiving computer or phone and copy it to that device.
  • Open the copied file on the destination device before erasing the source or reusing the drive.

These checks are more reliable than buying a drive based only on its connector. Apple’s documentation establishes that iPhone can transfer files to a storage device, server or cloud, but it does not verify any particular drive model or guarantee compatibility for every phone and format. No specific external storage product is assumed here.

Check the file after transfer

A completed progress indicator is not the same as verifying the handoff. Before deleting the source, confirm that the destination has the expected file and that it opens. For important work or irreplaceable media, keep the original until the recipient confirms receipt.

  • Check the filename and file type. Make sure the received item is the original file rather than a thumbnail, preview or exported copy.
  • Check whether the complete file arrived. If it cannot open or appears incomplete, repeat the transfer over a reliable connection or use another supported route.
  • Check media attributes when they matter. For iPhone Photos-to-AirDrop sharing, enable All Photos Data before sending if the original-format details, metadata, location, edit history or captions are needed.
  • Check the receiving app. Phone Link may transfer a file type that the default receiving app cannot open; use an app that supports that format.
  • Keep a source copy until confirmed. This prevents an interrupted download, incorrect recipient or unsupported destination app from becoming an irreversible loss.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems

The Apple recipient does not appear in Quick Share

For the direct Android-to-Apple route, confirm that the Apple recipient has set AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 Minutes, then verify that the Android model is listed by Google as supported. If the model is not supported, use the QR-code path instead; it requires internet on both devices and has the documented 24-hour availability and quotas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transfer option is missing or Phone Link rejects a file

Check the current feature-specific requirements for the Windows version and Android device. For Phone Link drag and drop, a file over 512 MB, a folder or a cloud-backed item is outside the documented support; a receiving app may also reject an otherwise transferred file type. Pick a route suited to that file instead of repeatedly retrying an unsupported transfer.

The recipient cannot download a remote attachment

Check whether the link is still within its stated availability period: 30 days for Mail Drop or 24 hours for Google’s Quick Share QR downloads to Apple devices. Confirm the recipient has internet access and storage space, and resend through an available workflow if the download window has expired.

The destination file is not usable

First check whether the transfer finished and the file opens. If it does not, do not discard the original. Retry or choose another route, and use an application that supports the received file type. If the picture or video looks different despite a successful transfer, confirm that the sender chose the original rather than a compressed preview; for iPhone Photos AirDrop, review the All Photos Data setting if associated media data was required.

Which route should you use?

For nearby Apple-to-Apple video sharing, start with AirDrop and enable All Photos Data when associated original details matter. For a nearby Android-to-Apple transfer, use Quick Share with AirDrop only if the Android model is supported; otherwise use Google’s QR workflow if both devices have internet and the size and timing fit its limits. For Android-to-Windows transfers, Phone Link suits files within 512 MB and the other drag-and-drop restrictions. Choose Mail Drop for a large iPhone video sent by email to a remote recipient, or compatible external storage when an offline handoff is needed.
