How to Fix Quick Share When Nearby Devices Don’t Appear

Quick Share discovery failures usually come from receiver visibility, Bluetooth, proximity, network restrictions, or platform compatibility. Follow this Android, Chromebook, and Windows troubleshooting sequence.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Quick Share cannot find a nearby device, make the receiving device visible first, then turn on Bluetooth, unlock the receiver, and move both devices close together. For Android-to-Windows transfers, also verify Wi‑Fi, same-network access, the Windows app, hardware compatibility, and regional availability. Work through those checks in order before buying an adapter or changing your router.

Start with the receiver: make it discoverable

Quick Share lists devices that are currently eligible to receive. A phone, Chromebook, or Windows PC can be nearby and still remain absent if its visibility setting excludes the sender. Fix the receiving device before changing anything on the sending device.

Android phones and tablets

Open Quick Share on the receiving Android device and select Receive. Google says, “When your device is in ‘Receive’ mode, it’s visible to anyone nearby when you’re on that screen.” Keep that screen open while the sender searches, then leave Receive mode when the transfer is complete. The official Android instructions are at Google Android Help: Use Quick Share.

If you do not want to use Receive mode, open Quick Share settings and inspect Device visibility or the similarly named visibility control. Depending on the Android version and device, the choices include:

  • Your devices: devices signed in to the same Google Account can see the receiver. On supported guides, this can remain available even when the screen is off.
  • Contacts: people in your contacts can see the device, but the receiving screen must be on and unlocked.
  • Everyone for 10 minutes: nearby devices can find the receiver temporarily. The timer limits exposure; it does not keep the device permanently discoverable.

Menu wording varies by manufacturer and Android release. If the sender is not signed in to the same Google Account and is not an eligible contact, choose Everyone for 10 minutes while testing. Return to a more restrictive option afterward.

Chromebooks

On a Chromebook, open Quick Share from the shelf or Settings and set the receiving device to a visible mode before searching from the other device. Keep the Quick Share panel open during the test. ChromeOS updates can move the control, so use the current Quick Share or sharing settings rather than an old screenshot. Google’s general Quick Share guidance covers supported Android and Chromebook behavior at Google Android Help: Use Quick Share on your Android device.

Windows PCs

The Windows app has its own visibility control. Open Quick Share on Windows, go to the app’s settings, and check Device visibility. Set it to a mode that permits the sending phone or tablet to find the PC. A PC can have Bluetooth enabled and still be hidden by this menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the change on the device that should receive the file. Changing visibility on the sender does not make a hidden receiver appear.

Turn on Bluetooth, unlock the receiver, and reduce the distance

Bluetooth is required on both ends

Enable Bluetooth on the sending and receiving devices. On Android, use Quick Settings or Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth where those labels are present. In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on. A Bluetooth icon that appears in a status area is not proof that Quick Share is currently allowed to discover the device; check the actual system toggle.

For Android troubleshooting, Google also calls out an unlocked receiving screen. Wake and unlock the phone or tablet, leave it on the home screen or in Receive mode, and search again. Contacts visibility in particular depends on the screen being on and unlocked.

Use close range while diagnosing

For Android and Chromebook troubleshooting, Google gives a distance of 30 centimetres (1 foot). Put the devices on the same desk, remove thick bags or cases that separate them, and retry. This is a troubleshooting distance, not a promise that Quick Share always stops working beyond one foot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Android-to-Windows requirements page instead states a range of up to 5 metres (16 feet). That figure belongs to the Windows app’s requirements context and should not be merged with the 30-centimetre Android troubleshooting instruction. The Windows guidance is available at Google Android Help: Share files between Android and Windows with Quick Share.

Check the platform-specific requirements

Check Android-to-Android or Chromebook Android-to-Windows
Receiver visibility Use Receive mode or Quick Share visibility such as Your devices, Contacts, or Everyone for 10 minutes. Use the Windows app’s Device visibility setting.
Bluetooth On for both devices; keep the receiving Android screen unlocked. On for both devices.
Network Basic nearby connectivity checks usually come first. Wi‑Fi must be on, and Google lists same-network connectivity. Office or managed networks can block device-to-device sharing.
Distance used for troubleshooting Google’s Android guidance says 30 cm (1 foot). Google’s Windows requirements say up to 5 m (16 feet).
Software and hardware Supported Android device or Chromebook with Quick Share. Quick Share app, 64-bit Windows 10 or later, Bluetooth, and Wi‑Fi or Ethernet; ARM-based PCs require Windows 11 or later.
Extra compatibility issue Check Android version and device support. A Windows device without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) extended advertising may not be discoverable on certain networks.

Android-to-Windows: verify Wi‑Fi and the network

Windows discovery adds requirements that do not apply in the same way to two nearby Android devices. Google lists Android 6.0 or later, a 64-bit installation of Windows 10 or later, Bluetooth, and Wi‑Fi or Ethernet. ARM-based Windows PCs require Windows 11 or later. Both devices should have Quick Share installed and enabled, and Google lists same-network connectivity for the Windows scenario.

Confirm the app and edition

  • Install and open the appropriate Quick Share app on Windows.
  • On a Samsung PC, Google’s support page directs users to Samsung’s Quick Share app from Microsoft Store.
  • Check that Windows is 64-bit. An ARM-based PC needs Windows 11 or a later release, not Windows 10.
  • Confirm the phone runs Android 6.0 or newer.

Windows availability is restricted in some countries. Because supported regions and requirements can change, check the live requirements on Google’s Android-to-Windows Quick Share page rather than relying on an old download guide.

Test whether the network blocks peer discovery

Some workplace, school, hotel, and guest networks isolate clients from one another. In that configuration, the phone and PC may both show Wi‑Fi service yet remain unable to discover each other. A managed firewall or wireless isolation policy can cause this without any fault in Quick Share.

Google’s stated test is to turn off Wi‑Fi on the phone, enable the phone’s hotspot, and connect the Windows PC to that hotspot. Then reopen Quick Share and search. If the PC appears on the phone hotspot but not on the normal network, the original network is the likely restriction. Ask the network administrator whether device-to-device traffic is blocked; changing random router settings on a managed network may violate its policy.

This hotspot test changes the network path; it does not prove that the phone’s cellular connection is faster or that a hotspot is a permanent solution. Use it to separate a network-discovery problem from an app or hardware problem.

Check BLE extended advertising limitations

Google warns: “If your Windows device doesn’t support Bluetooth low energy (BLE) extended advertising, other people can’t find and share with you on certain networks.” This is a capability limitation, not simply a Bluetooth on/off error. It can explain why a Windows PC is visible in one environment but absent in another.

The official guidance does not establish that buying a particular Bluetooth adapter will add this capability or fix discovery. Do not treat an adapter replacement as a guaranteed remedy. First complete the visibility, network, software, and distance checks; if the PC still fails, verify its Bluetooth hardware and Windows support with the computer manufacturer.

When the device still does not appear: reset the session

Once visibility, Bluetooth, proximity, and Windows networking are correct, clear temporary state in a controlled order. These steps address a stuck discovery session or a device that is busy, rather than changing permanent settings.

  1. Finish or cancel another transfer. A device already sending or receiving may not accept a second discovery request. Wait for the current share to complete, or cancel it from the notification or Quick Share panel.
  2. Close and reopen Quick Share. Exit the Quick Share panel or Windows app completely, launch it again, and retry with the receiver visible.
  3. Toggle airplane mode. On the phone, turn airplane mode on briefly, then turn it off and re-enable Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi if the system left them disabled.
  4. Restart both devices. Reboot the phone, Chromebook, or Windows PC instead of only locking the screen. After startup, confirm visibility again because a restart can restore a default visibility state.
  5. On Android 12 or earlier, check Location. Google includes Location in its troubleshooting steps for these older Android releases. Open the system Location setting, enable it temporarily for the test, and retry.

Do not perform every reset at once without retesting. After each step, search from the sender so you can identify which condition restored discovery.

Use a QR code when a supported Android device cannot be found

For supported nearby Android devices, Google documents a QR-code sharing fallback. Open the sharing flow on the sender and choose the QR-code option when it is offered; the receiver scans it using the device’s supported scanning path. Availability and the exact scan location vary by device and software version, so the option may not appear on every phone or tablet.

A QR code can bypass the normal device-list selection, but it does not make an unsupported Windows setup compatible. Use it as an Android fallback after confirming that both devices support Quick Share and that the receiver is close and unlocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate discovery problems from notification problems on Windows

Sometimes the PC is listed and the transfer occurs, but Windows does not show an alert. That is different from the phone’s sender list being empty. For missing notifications, check Windows Focus Assist or Do not disturb, then open Settings > System > Notifications and allow notifications for Quick Share. These settings affect the notice shown after a request; they do not make a hidden PC discoverable.

Common failure patterns and the right fix

The receiver is absent immediately

Open Receive mode or Device visibility on the receiving device, set a permissive option, unlock the screen, and retry within the applicable close range. This pattern usually points to discoverability rather than file size or storage space.

Android sees the PC only on a phone hotspot

The normal Wi‑Fi network is probably isolating devices or blocking peer traffic. Keep the hotspot test result as evidence for the network administrator. If the network is managed, only its administrator can change that policy.

The PC appears on one network but not another

Check whether the failing network is a guest, office, school, or hotel network. Then review Windows Device visibility and the PC’s BLE extended-advertising capability. Google specifically warns that missing BLE extended advertising can prevent discovery on certain networks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The device appears, but the request never completes

Keep both screens awake, verify Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi remain on, and ensure another transfer is not active. Close and reopen Quick Share, then restart both devices if the session remains stuck.

Only older Android devices fail

For Android 12 or earlier, check Location as well as Bluetooth, visibility, and proximity. A Location toggle can be the missing condition even when newer phones on the same desk work normally.

What not to buy or change first

Official guidance emphasizes visibility settings, Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi and network configuration, proximity, software compatibility, and device state. It does not identify a generally applicable product that fixes missing Quick Share devices.

A Bluetooth adapter may sound like a solution when a Windows PC has a hardware limitation, but Google does not say that an aftermarket adapter adds BLE extended advertising or guarantees discovery. A new router is likewise not established as a remedy for a managed network that intentionally blocks device-to-device traffic. Complete the documented checks and identify the failing condition before spending money.

A concise decision path

  1. Identify the receiver: Android, Chromebook, or Windows.
  2. Expose it: Receive mode or Android visibility; Device visibility in the Windows app.
  3. Prepare the radios: Bluetooth on for both, Wi‑Fi on where Windows requires it, and the Android receiver unlocked.
  4. Reduce distance: 30 cm (1 foot) for Android troubleshooting; up to 5 m (16 feet) in Google’s Windows requirements context.
  5. For Windows, test networking: use the phone hotspot if the normal network may isolate devices.
  6. Reset state: finish other transfers, reopen Quick Share, toggle airplane mode, restart, and check Location on Android 12 or earlier.
  7. Escalate compatibility: verify Android 6.0 or later, 64-bit Windows 10 or later, Windows 11 or later for ARM PCs, the correct app, regional availability, and BLE extended advertising limitations.

Following this order tells you whether the missing device is hidden, out of range, blocked by a network, busy, or outside the platform’s compatibility requirements. It also keeps a settings problem from being mistaken for a hardware purchase decision.
