You can also reshare a file already in Slack or share a cloud-hosted file through a supported integration. Choose the destination based on who needs access and whether the file should be stored in Slack or remain with its cloud provider.
Upload a file to a Slack channel or direct message
Use a channel when the file belongs with a project or team discussion; colleagues can find it alongside the related conversation. Use a direct message when the intended audience is limited. Slack recommends sharing project files in a dedicated project channel. Slack’s file-sharing instructions describe the available controls.

On desktop
- Open the channel or direct message.
- Drag files into the message field, or click the plus icon and choose the file-upload option.
- Add a message to explain what the file is or what recipients should do with it, if useful.
- Send the message. Slack’s guidance allows up to 10 files in one desktop drag-and-drop batch.
On mobile
- Open the channel or direct message.
- Tap the plus icon.
- Select a recent file or choose Upload file.
- Add context if needed, then tap the send control.
Slack says files up to 1 GB can be added. The exact upload controls may vary with the app version or conversation restrictions.
Reshare a file that is already in Slack
To send an existing Slack file to another conversation, find the file in the message where it was shared. On desktop, hover over it; on mobile, tap it. Choose Share, select the destination channel or direct message, add an optional message, and share or send. The Share menu also includes Copy Link for a file or message. A link does not give people access to a private conversation or file they otherwise cannot view.

Share a file stored in a cloud service
Use a cloud integration when the authoritative copy should remain in its existing storage service instead of being uploaded as a Slack file. A preview or link in Slack does not guarantee that every conversation member can open the underlying document; recipients still need the correct permissions from the provider.
Google Drive
Use the Google Drive app from a Slack conversation to select and share a Drive file. Slack says these files can be searched in Slack but are not stored in the Slack workspace; they remain in Google Drive. If a recipient cannot view, edit, or comment, the file owner may need to change the Drive permissions. See Google Drive for Slack.

OneDrive or SharePoint
Connect the OneDrive and SharePoint app, choose a file from the conversation, and share it. The file remains in OneDrive or SharePoint, and the Slack message includes a link back to the Microsoft service. The integration does not support sharing folders or OneNote files. Recipients need suitable access in the Microsoft service. See OneDrive and SharePoint for Slack.
Share a Slack file with someone outside Slack
Slack documents creating an external link for a file on paid plans, but the option depends on workspace owner or admin settings. In a public channel, any member can create an external link; in a private channel, only the uploader can. If the option is missing, check with a workspace owner or administrator rather than assuming the file or app is broken. See Slack’s guidance on sharing files outside Slack and its public-file-sharing settings.

What to check when sharing does not work
- File size or type: Slack’s help guidance sets a 1 GB maximum. Some file types cannot be added in Slack Connect conversations.
- Slack Connect restrictions: Uploading or sharing may be restricted in a Slack Connect conversation. Ask a workspace owner or administrator if a restriction seems unexpected.
- Malware scan: Slack scans files for viruses and other malware and will not upload a file if malware is detected.
- Missing external-link option: External sharing requires a paid plan and may be disabled or limited by workspace settings. Creation rights also depend on whether the file is in a public or private channel and, for a private channel, whether you uploaded it.
- Cloud file access denied: Ask the file owner to check permissions in Google Drive, OneDrive, or SharePoint. Seeing a preview in Slack is not proof of access to the original file.
- Older items in a free workspace: Slack says free workspaces can view and search messages and files from the last 90 days. When that limit is reached, older items are hidden to make room for new ones; messages and files more than one year old are permanently deleted. Details are in Slack’s free-workspace usage limits.
Choose the right sharing method
| Method | Where the file is stored | What recipients need | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upload to Slack | Slack workspace | Access to the conversation and file | The file should be attached directly to the Slack discussion. |
| Google Drive integration | Google Drive | Access granted in Drive | The existing Drive copy should remain the authoritative file. |
| OneDrive or SharePoint integration | OneDrive or SharePoint | Access granted in the Microsoft service | The existing Microsoft-hosted copy should remain authoritative. |
| External Slack file link | Slack workspace | A link and any required access; availability depends on plan and admin settings | A person outside Slack needs a link to a Slack file. |
