Share a direct link to the Figma file or the relevant frame, give the developer the access level they need, and confirm that inspection, copying, and export are allowed. For Dev Mode, the recipient needs an eligible Full or Dev seat on a paid plan; a View seat can still support basic inspection and asset export when file settings permit it.
Prepare the design for handoff
Make the file useful before sending its link. Clear layer and component names help developers identify the right element; component descriptions can explain intended use and variants. Mark work ready for development where appropriate, and add annotations when measurements or context need to be explicit.

Link the file or relevant layers in the ticket or project documentation so the design is close to the implementation task. Figma’s Dev Mode guide describes inspection and handoff features, including annotations.

- Open Share. Invite the developer directly or copy a link to the file.
- Point to the relevant design. Select a frame before copying its link if the developer should land on a particular screen or component. Figma also provides a link to Dev Mode.
- Check the recipient’s access. Private files require the recipient to sign in and have permission to open the file; sending a URL alone does not grant access.
Figma’s sharing guide describes link and invitation options. It also notes that projects are transitioning to folders beginning August 3, 2026; during the rollout, content and access remain the same.

Choose permissions and check export controls

Figma’s file-sharing permissions guidance and access-management guidance explain controls. View access can be enough for inspection, but it does not override restrictions set by the file owner.
Confirm seat and plan eligibility
Dev Mode is a Figma Design inspection and handoff workspace. Figma says Dev Mode is available on paid plans and requires a Full or Dev seat; it is not available on Starter. View seats can still perform basic inspection, including viewing properties and measurements, copying code, and exporting assets, subject to file permissions. Inspect specifications and retrieve assets
- Open the Figma Design file and choose Dev Mode, or press Shift+D.
- Select the frame or layer to inspect. Use the Inspect panel to review layout, typography, styles, variables, component details, and code information.
- For an asset, use the export controls, choose a configured format, and download it. Figma documents PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF export formats.
Figma’s inspection guide distinguishes an original source image from an export rendered at the layer’s current size. Make sure the chosen export matches the implementation need rather than assuming the original file and the displayed-size export are interchangeable.

The Inspect panel can provide code information, but developers should not assume every snippet is a project-ready implementation. For components connected through Code Connect, Figma can show linked design-system code instead of autogenerated snippets. Where no connection is set up, use the displayed properties as implementation reference and follow the project’s own component and coding conventions. See Figma’s Code Connect documentation.

Quick handoff checklist
- The link opens the intended file or selected frame for the developer.
- The developer is invited or otherwise has permission to access the file.
- View or edit access matches the work required.
- The recipient has a suitable seat and plan for Dev Mode, if Dev Mode inspection is required.
- Copying and export are permitted, and the needed format is configured.
- Layers, components, annotations, and ticket links provide enough context to implement the design.
