Energy Transfer LP common unitholders receive an annual Schedule K-1 (Form 1065), not a Form 1099-DIV for their ET partnership-unit income. Energy Transfer is a publicly traded master limited partnership, so partnership tax items are allocated to unitholders rather than reported as ordinary corporate dividends.
Why ET common unitholders get a K-1
Energy Transfer identifies itself as a publicly traded master limited partnership. It says the partnership generally is not subject to federal or state income tax; instead, annual income, gains, losses, deductions, and credits flow through to unitholders, who report their allocated shares on individual tax returns. See Energy Transfer’s tax information.

That is why “1099 or K-1?” is not a choice between interchangeable forms for ET common-unit income. The IRS explains that partnership amounts may be reported on Schedule K-1, while a dividend payer reports dividend categories on Form 1099-DIV. The applicable form depends on the issuer’s tax treatment and the kind of item being reported, not simply on the fact that an investment paid cash. See IRS Topic 404.

What this answer does—and does not—cover
This answer concerns Energy Transfer LP common unitholders and ET partnership units. It should not be applied automatically to a different Energy Transfer security, a former holding, or another entity with a similar name. Your tax reporting can also depend on whether you sold or transferred units, your account, state of residence, and personal tax circumstances. The K-1 and its statements provide information for your situation; they do not determine every filing obligation in a general-purpose answer.
