On Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, other local users can play a digital game when its Virtual Game Card is loaded on that console. On PS5, enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play lets other users on one selected console play games you’ve purchased and downloaded. Xbox uses a Home Xbox setting, but the current setup and sharing terms should be confirmed with Microsoft before relying on specific limits or benefits.
How game sharing works across the three platforms
| Platform | What makes a game available to other users | Console scope | Offline access | Subscription sharing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | A Virtual Game Card loaded on the console | One Nintendo Account can associate up to two Switch-family consoles for loading Virtual Game Cards | Yes, for a loaded card | Not established by Nintendo’s cited Virtual Game Card guidance |
| PS5 | Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on the console; the purchaser’s game must be downloaded | One PS5 at a time | Yes | Other users can access some PlayStation Plus benefits |
| Xbox | Commonly described as designating a Home Xbox | Current limit not established by the available official source | Current terms not established here | Current terms not established here |
The Nintendo and PlayStation details in the table come from their respective support guidance: Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card guide and PlayStation’s Console Sharing and Offline Play guide. Xbox is commonly described in terms of Home Xbox, but the secondary overview available here does not establish current rules: Meristation’s comparison.

Share digital games on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
Nintendo’s current system treats eligible eShop purchases and downloadable content as Virtual Game Cards. Load a card onto a console and users of that console can play the game there, including offline. A card must be loaded on the console for other local users to access it; owning the purchase on an account alone is not the same as having its card loaded for everyone on that console.
Load and move Virtual Game Cards
One Nintendo Account can associate up to two Switch-family consoles for loading Virtual Game Cards. To move a card between those linked consoles, both must be connected to the internet and powered on or in sleep mode. A card cannot be moved while its game is being played on the other console. See Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card guide for its current instructions.

Lend a game to a family-group member
Lending is different from loading a card on one of your own consoles. Nintendo permits lending eligible cards to members of the Nintendo Account family group, but the lender cannot play the game while it is loaned. The consoles need to be near each other to lend or borrow, and some games are not eligible.
- Nintendo allows up to three cards to be lent at once.
- Each borrower can borrow one game at a time.
- A loan automatically returns after 14 days unless it is returned or retrieved earlier.
These lending conditions are described in Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card guide.

Keep save data separate from game access
Being able to launch a shared game does not mean its save data has moved with it. Nintendo says save data is associated with the Nintendo Account and the console used. A save transfer moves data from the source console, while Save Data Cloud is available to Nintendo Switch Online members for supported games. Check the specific game’s support before changing consoles or accounts.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse a physical game card instead
A physical Switch game card can be inserted into the console where someone wants to play, as Nintendo describes in its multi-console guidance. This shares access to the physical copy; it does not transfer a digital purchase. Confirm compatibility for the particular game and console.

Share games on PS5
Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 where you want other users to access your games. Once enabled, anyone using that console can play your purchased and downloaded games and media, even when offline. They can also use some PlayStation Plus benefits. Sony’s setting applies to one PS5 at a time.
- On the PS5 you want to share from, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable.
- If you are switching sharing to a different PS5, disable the setting on the previous console first.
Sony says the feature is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in to PlayStation. Subscription access is conditional: the membership must remain active, and a game offered through the subscription must still be available. Follow Sony’s current support guide for account and console details.
What to know about Xbox sharing
Xbox game sharing is commonly associated with the Home Xbox setting. However, the official Microsoft support terms needed to confirm current setup steps, console limits, offline access, simultaneous play, and which subscription benefits transfer are not established here. Those details can affect whether a particular household setup works, so consult Microsoft’s current Xbox support guidance before changing the setting or depending on shared access.
Quick Recap
Choose the sharing method that fits
- For multiple users on one Switch-family console: load the relevant Virtual Game Card on that console.
- For a second linked Switch-family console: use Nintendo’s card-loading and moving process; both consoles need internet connectivity to move a card.
- For a temporary Nintendo loan: lend an eligible Virtual Game Card to a family-group member, understanding that the lender loses access while the loan is active.
- For users on one PS5: enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on that console.
- For Xbox: verify Microsoft’s current Home Xbox rules before proceeding, since exact terms are not established here.
