Send the encrypted file or sharing link through one channel, then give the decryption password to the intended recipient through a separate, independently controlled channel. Do not put both in the same email or message: someone who gains access to that conversation could obtain everything needed to open the file.
Why the password should travel separately
Encryption protects a file only while the secret needed to decrypt it remains secret. If the file and its password are delivered together in one email, message, or account, access to that single conversation may expose both. Separating them means an unintended recipient of the file must also gain access to a different channel.

Separation is a practical risk reduction, not a guarantee. Confirm the recipient’s identity before sending the password, particularly if you are relying on a phone number or messaging account that could be compromised or confused with someone else’s. No particular consumer messaging app is established as the safest choice for every person and threat model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a way to send the file and the password
| Method | What it transfers | Access considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Encrypted attachment or file transfer | The encrypted file; send the password separately. | Use a distinct channel for the password. The recipient needs a compatible way to open the encrypted file. |
| Password-protected Proton Drive link | A link to the shared file or folder; the recipient also needs the password. | Proton documents optional link expiration. The link and password should not be delivered together. See Proton’s password-protection instructions and share-link instructions. |
| Password manager share link | The password as a shared item, not the encrypted file. | 1Password documents expiry settings and access for anyone with the link or selected people. Check its current item-sharing instructions. |
| Offline handoff on removable media | The encrypted file on a USB drive; send or tell the password separately. | An ordinary flash drive does not automatically encrypt its contents. An encrypted drive also does not eliminate the need to deliver the password safely. |
These options are not an independent comparative security test, so there is no universal ranking. Consider whether the file itself or just its password is being shared, whether the recipient needs an account or app, whether access can expire or be revoked, what happens if a link or password is forwarded, and whether each channel is independently controlled.
#1 Best Overall
- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
Share a password-protected Proton Drive link
- Select the file or folder in Proton Drive and open its sharing controls.
- Enable password protection and set a password.
- Set an expiration date if it suits the sharing need. Proton’s instructions describe expiration as optional.
- Send the link to the recipient. Deliver the password separately, through a secure communication channel or in person, as Proton recommends.
- Confirm the recipient can open the link and file. They need both the link and the password.
Interface labels and steps can change; consult Proton’s current instructions before sharing.
Send the password as a separate item with a password manager
A password manager’s sharing feature can provide the decryption password without placing it in the same message as the file. For example, 1Password documents share links with expiry settings and access controls for anyone holding the link or selected people. Use that only for the secret: the recipient still needs the encrypted file or its link through a separate delivery.

Before using a share link, choose recipient access deliberately and set an expiry where useful. A link that can be forwarded may reach someone beyond the intended recipient, depending on its access settings. See 1Password’s sharing guidance and its explanation of the 1Password security model.
Use an offline transfer when it fits
You can carry an encrypted file on removable media, such as a USB drive, when an offline handoff is useful. Keep password delivery separate even then. CISA describes file encryption and removable-media encryption, and names 7-Zip as an example for encrypting multiple files in a compressed container. Do not assume that an ordinary USB drive encrypts data automatically; nor does hardware encryption solve the separate problem of password delivery. See CISA’s guidance on protecting stored data.

- Certified to FIPS 197 - U.S. Government Approved High Level Information Security Standard.
- Protection against brute force password attacks - Data is automatically erased after 6 unsuccessful access attempts. The data of the USB flash drive type c encryption with dual connectors is destroyed and the cryptographic drive is reset.
- Durable dual-layer waterproof design* — Protects the crypto reader from bumps, drops, run-in and immersion in water. The electronics are protected by a hardened internal case. Rubberized silicone outer case provides a final layer of protection.
- Auto-Lock —The cryptographic key automatically encrypts all data and locks when removed from a PC/Mac or when screen protection or "computer lock" is enabled.
- Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.
Protect more than the file contents
Encryption can prevent unauthorized access to document contents, but it may not conceal metadata. CISA notes that details such as an author or creation date may remain visible. If those details are sensitive, consider what information the file itself exposes before sharing it.
Keep the password and any recovery keys somewhere safe and accessible to you. CISA warns that losing recovery information can result in permanent data loss. If you use a password manager to hold or share a password, make sure you understand who can access the shared item and for how long.

- FIPS 197 with XTS-AES 256-bit Encryption: Provides business-grade security with hardware-based encryption to protect your sensitive data
- Brute Force and BadUSB Attack Protection: Safeguards against unauthorized access attempts and malicious USB attacks with digitally-signed firmware
- Multi-Password Option with Complex/Passphrase modes: Offers flexible password configuration options to meet various security requirements and user preferences
- New Passphrase Mode: Enhanced security feature allowing users to create longer, more memorable password phrases for easier access without compromising protection
- Dual Read-Only (Write-Protect) Settings: Enables write protection functionality to prevent accidental data modification or deletion when needed
A simple workflow for an ordinary exchange
- Encrypt the file with a strong, unique password using a method suitable for the file and recipient.
- Send the encrypted file or its share link through the agreed file-delivery channel.
- Contact the recipient through a different channel that an unintended recipient of the file is unlikely to control.
- Verify who you are speaking with, then provide the password.
- Keep the password or recovery information securely so you can recover your own file if needed.
For example, if you email an encrypted attachment, you might tell the recipient the password in person or provide it during a separate call or secure message after confirming their identity. The right channel depends on the risk and circumstances; the sources do not establish one app as universally safe.
