Keep a save or download option available: file sharing depends on the browser, page policy, and the user’s choice of destination.
Prepare the image as a file
The Web Share API shares a file payload; it does not accept a canvas element directly. Export the canvas, then construct a File with a filename and MIME type that match the exported data.

Check both API availability and whether the browser accepts the actual file. The presence of navigator.share alone does not establish that file sharing is supported. MDN recommends checking file payloads with navigator.canShare({ files }). Pass the files property to that capability check.

});That compact example awaits file creation before calling the share API. If export may take long, create the file after the canvas is finalized and store it in application state; when the user taps Share, call navigator.share({ files: [file] }) immediately. WebKit explains the interaction requirement in its User Activation API article: “This error happens when code is not run as a direct result of the end-user clicking or tapping on an HTML element (e.g., a <button>).” A delayed or detached call may no longer have the required transient user activation.

Meet the page and browser requirements
- Use a secure context. The Web Share API is restricted to secure contexts. Consult MDN’s Web Share API overview for the API’s security and usage requirements.
- Check the Permissions Policy. The
web-sharedirective can block access; its default allowlist isself. If the page is inside an iframe, the embedding policy may need to delegate permission. A policy block can produceNotAllowedError. See MDN’s web-share Permissions-Policy reference. - Check the specific file.
canShare({ files: [file] })reports whether that data can be shared according to the implementation; it can return false if file sharing is unsupported, the data cannot be validated, or policy prevents sharing. - Keep a fallback. If the capability check fails or sharing throws, let the user save or download the generated image rather than leaving the action unusable.
What to expect on iOS
WebKit announced navigator.share() in Safari 12.1 as a way to invoke the operating system’s native sharing dialog. That release note establishes historical Safari support, not identical behavior across every current iOS browser shell, embedded view, file type, or destination app. See WebKit’s Safari 12.1 feature announcement.
The browser hands the supported payload to the device’s native share mechanism. The user chooses whether and where to share it; opening the share sheet is not confirmation that an image reached a recipient or was saved.

Handle cancellation and destination-specific behavior
An AbortError can mean the user canceled or no share targets were available, so treat it as a normal outcome and leave the image accessible through your fallback. Other errors can signal invalid data, a policy or activation block, or a problem during transfer. Show a useful recovery option instead of reporting a successful delivery merely because the share sheet appeared. MDN documents the API’s promise behavior and exceptions in its Navigator.share() reference.
If you include text or a URL alongside the image, verify the combination in the iOS versions and destination apps you support. Older WebKit issue reports describe a Safari 15/iOS 15 case in which choosing Save Image did not resolve the share promise, and a 2023 report involving image-plus-text sharing where text was ignored. These reports establish historical edge cases, not current universal behavior: the Save Image report and the image-and-text report.
