To guide an AI video shot, describe camera motion, subject action, and environmental movement as separate instructions. State where the camera begins, how and in which direction it moves, what the move reveals, and where it ends. For image-to-video, let the source image establish the visible scene and use the prompt mainly to direct motion. These are ways to communicate intent—not guarantees of an exact camera path or unchanged identity across every model.
Start with the right kind of input
Text-to-video
When generating from text alone, describe the visual ingredients and the motion the shot should contain. A useful order is subject and appearance, setting and lighting, framing and style, then subject action, environmental motion, camera movement, and pace. Runway’s Gen-4 Video Prompting Guide separates visual components from motion components, giving you a way to organize a prompt without treating it as a rigid formula.

Image-to-video
A starting image already communicates details such as the subject, composition, lighting, and style. Google Cloud puts it plainly: “Your source image already provides the subject, scene, and style.” Use prompt space to describe what changes and how, rather than repeating every visible detail. Its video-generation best practices advise against re-describing the image’s character, background, or lighting. Runway’s Prompting Guide likewise recommends focusing an image-to-video prompt on motion.

Write the three motion layers separately
Before combining directions into a sentence, decide what each layer should do. This makes a result easier to diagnose: if the scene moves but the camera should be fixed, you can adjust the camera instruction without rewriting the subject’s action.

- AI Tracking: Insta360 Link 2 physically pans and tilts to follow your movements around the room, keeping you or your group perfectly in frame.
- Camera: Choose a move the model recognizes, such as a locked shot, pan, tilt, dolly, tracking move, orbit, crane rise, or handheld movement. Specify direction and pace where they matter.
- Subject: State what the person, creature, or object does. If the source image already shows who or what it is, refer to it simply as “the subject” or “the character.”
- Environment: Describe independent movement in fog, water, foliage, particles, or other surroundings. Avoid letting background motion imply camera movement unless that is intended.
Then consider timing and visual progression: what is in frame at the beginning, what becomes visible during the move, and how the shot ends. Google Cloud’s guidance distinguishes camera movement from subject and environmental motion; Runway’s guides also treat these as separate prompt elements. The exact vocabulary a model understands—and how closely it follows it—varies.
Describe a trajectory, not just a camera label
“Cinematic camera” does not tell a model where to travel. Give it a starting relationship to the subject, a path and direction, a pace, and an endpoint or reveal. For example: “The camera slowly tracks left around the stationary subject, ending with the doorway revealed behind it.” This is an illustrative prompt, not a tested result. It gives the model a progression to attempt rather than a general mood alone.
For a more complex move, break the sequence into phases in plain language: what the camera sees first, how its framing changes, and what it reveals by the end. Runway’s camera terms and examples recommend describing what is in view or revealed at each phase of a dramatic movement. Google Cloud’s examples use concrete directions such as dollying toward a subject and making a sweeping aerial rise from ground level.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the camera should stay still
Say explicitly that the camera is locked or motionless, then name the movement that should remain inside the frame—for example, the subject turns while leaves shift in the background. Static shots can be difficult for video models, particularly in some wide or establishing scenes; Runway’s camera guide recommends reinforcing that the camera does not move and that motion comes only from the subject.

Give subject consistency a useful starting point
Begin with a clean, sharp reference image that clearly shows the subject and the composition you want. If the image contains several possible subjects, make the intended one unambiguous in the prompt. Simple references such as “the subject” can help avoid introducing new descriptions that conflict with the image.
Some workflows offer additional reference inputs, but the feature is model- and version-specific. Google’s Veo 3.1 Gemini API documentation describes using up to three reference images with supported Veo 3.1 models to guide generated video and preserve the appearance of a person, character, or product. That is a documented capability for those models, not a universal identity lock across video generators.
Choose a continuation method that matches the model
For a longer sequence, continuity depends on the workflow as well as the prompt. The options documented by different vendors are not interchangeable.

This gives the next generation a visual starting point from the preceding clip.
- Google Veo 3.1: Google documents video extension as a workflow for supported Veo 3.1 models, alongside reference-image inputs. Check the documentation for the particular model and interface you are using; an extension is distinct from starting a new generation with a still frame.
Neither approach makes continuity automatic. Treat each new segment as a fresh generation that may interpret the image or references differently.

Refine prompts one change at a time
- Establish the essential shot. Start with the source image or core visual description, the subject’s main action, and one camera instruction.
- Check the result against the intended motion. Identify whether the camera, subject, or environment is the part that needs correction.
- Add one refinement. Adjust a single element—such as pace, a small environmental movement, or a focus change—then assess the new result.
- Keep or remove the change. If the result improves, retain it; if not, revert before trying another adjustment.
Runway recommends incremental prompting: “Adding one new element at a time will help you identify which additions improve your video, understand how different elements interact, and more effectively troubleshoot unexpected results.” The principle is useful beyond a single model because changing several instructions at once makes it harder to know what affected the output.

The camera moves when the shot should be static
Make the static instruction explicit and isolate movement to the subject or environment. Avoid adding ambiguous camera language elsewhere in the prompt. Runway notes that static shots can be challenging for video models, so even a clear instruction may not be followed exactly.
The subject or scene does not move as requested
Inspect the source image for visual cues that conflict with the prompt. Runway Academy points out that motion blur or dust around a car can contradict an instruction for the car to remain stationary. A cleaner image can give the model fewer conflicting signals.

The result becomes a cut instead of one continuous move
Check whether the requested action and camera trajectory are too ambitious for the chosen clip duration. Runway Academy suggests considering the phrase “Continuous, seamless shot” when troubleshooting unwanted cuts. This is a suggestion from its guide, not a guaranteed fix for other models.

Hardware Note: Currently not compatible with ARM-based Windows systems or Windows Hello Face Recognition.
The move is incomplete or rushed
Simplify the trajectory or make its progression more explicit. The requested path and subject action need to fit the available clip length. Runway’s Gen-4 guide describes 5- or 10-second durations for that workflow, but those values should not be generalized to other models or versions; consult the current controls for the generator you use.
Compare workflows before choosing a model
Official guides describe different capabilities and prompting advice, not a controlled comparison of output quality across vendors. Use the following questions to check whether a workflow suits the shot you want:
- Starting input: Can you generate from text, use a starting image, add multiple references, or specify frames?
- Camera direction: Can you describe the move, direction, pace, progression, and framing in a prompt or through other controls?
- Subject continuity: Does the particular model and version support reference images, last-frame continuation, or video extension?
- Duration and complexity: Can the selected clip length accommodate both the action and the camera path?
- Iteration options: Can you reuse a generated frame, edit the starting image, or extend a clip if a shot needs another segment?
Runway’s documentation covers camera terminology, incremental prompting, and last-frame continuation; Google’s Veo 3.1 documentation covers reference images and video extension. These differences establish that the workflows exist, not that one provider produces more consistent or cinematic results.
