1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProtecting sleep starts with preserving a real recovery window—not simply promising yourself you will stop working later. NIOSH recommends at least 10 consecutive off-duty hours to allow time for 7–8 hours of sleep. That is schedule guidance, not a guarantee or a legal entitlement, and it may require changes to workload, staffing, or shift design as well as personal boundaries.
Start by finding what is cutting into recovery
For several workdays, note when work ends, when you try to sleep, and what interrupts the time in between. Look for specific, recurring causes rather than treating every late night as a personal failure.

- Meetings or routine tasks scheduled near the end of a shift
- Messages, calls, or requests that arrive after you are off duty
- Late shifts, short turnarounds, or rotating schedules
- Work that routinely cannot be completed within scheduled hours
- On-call expectations or handoffs that make it hard to disconnect
This map helps distinguish a boundary you can set yourself—such as not checking routine messages—from a problem that requires a manager to address staffing, workload, or scheduling.

Set a protected off-duty window
Work backward from the time you need to wake. Allow for sleep, winding down, and necessary personal responsibilities, then mark a continuous period when you are not working or expected to monitor work. NIOSH recommends at least 10 consecutive hours off duty to make room for 7–8 hours of sleep; actual sleep needs and circumstances vary. The recommendation is not a clinical prescription or a promise that sleep will come easily.

For example, if you need to wake at 6 a.m., a 10-hour off-duty window would begin by 8 p.m. That window is not all sleep time: it needs to leave room for the transition to bed and other needs. If your schedule does not allow a reasonable recovery period, the answer may need to involve a different shift, fewer hours, or another work-level change rather than a more elaborate bedtime routine.
Make availability clear before the next interruption
Tell the people who rely on you when your workday ends, when you will next check messages, and which channel or process is reserved for genuine urgency. A clear boundary could sound like this:

After-hours email and phone contact can take time away from personal responsibilities and sleep, increasing health and safety risks, according to Claire C. Caruso’s chapter in the 2019 Total Worker Health volume. If checking a device has become automatic, silence work notifications or remove work accounts from personal devices during the protected window if your role permits. Do not disable a genuinely required emergency channel without arranging an alternative with your employer.
Pause before accepting more work
You do not have to answer a new request immediately. NIOSH’s guidance for handling high demands suggests saying that you will consider the request and get back to the person. Then assess it against existing responsibilities and the time you have available.

Useful questions include:
- What is the actual deadline, and what happens if it moves?
- Which current task should be delayed, delegated, or dropped to make room?
- Can someone else take part of the work?
- Does this request require work during protected off-duty time?
A concise response might be: “I can take this on if we move the deadline for X or reassign Y. Which should take priority?” NIOSH advises prioritizing because not every demand can be treated as the highest priority at once. If work hours are repeatedly too demanding, its guidance also suggests discussing another shift schedule or reduced hours where feasible.
Make recurring boundary failures a work-design conversation
If the same late requests, understaffed shifts, incomplete handoffs, or on-call demands repeatedly intrude on sleep, bring the pattern—not just an isolated incident—to a manager. Explain what is happening, how often, and what change might address it. Possible topics include workload, staffing, handoff timing, shift assignments, after-hours contact expectations, and whether hours can be reduced.

NIOSH frames fatigue prevention as a shared responsibility: employers and workers should work together to reduce risks. Its guidance on nurses also treats schedule and psychological work conditions as organizational concerns. A worker cannot reliably protect sleep through willpower if the schedule or workload leaves no workable recovery period.
Build a repeatable end-of-work transition
When your shift ends, use a short routine to mark the change from work to personal time. For home workers, NIOSH recommends boundaries around work time and physical space, detaching at the end of the day, and keeping consistent sleep and wake timing.
- Record the next day’s first task so you are less likely to keep rehearsing it mentally.
- Close work applications and put away or leave the work area, when possible.
- Follow a consistent wind-down and sleep routine suited to your schedule.
These steps can support a boundary, but they cannot compensate for a shift pattern that provides too little time to recover. Shift workers may need sleep timing strategies tailored to their schedule; NIOSH’s nurse-specific material should not be treated as one-size-fits-all advice for every occupation.

If you have ongoing difficulty sleeping or excessive sleepiness at work, NIOSH advises seeking assessment from a healthcare provider who specializes in sleep disorders. Persistent symptoms deserve professional evaluation; a schedule boundary alone is not a diagnosis or treatment plan.
