Wanted levels are a game’s shorthand for how much law-enforcement attention a player has attracted, but the rules differ by game and mode. In Grand Theft Auto V, the documented scale runs from one to five stars; GTA Online also has a separate wanted-level option for creator-made races. Reported GTA VI gameplay points to a different emphasis: crimes need to be witnessed or trigger an alarm, and police recognition may involve clothing, faces and vehicles.
How do GTA wanted levels work?
A wanted level is a visible indicator of police interest, not a universal simulation rule. The available documentation covers different parts of different games: Rockstar’s GTA V help manual explains its star scale, while Rockstar’s separate Race Creator guide describes a wanted-level setting for races in GTA Online. Neither should be treated as a complete specification for every pursuit in every GTA game—or in other open-world games.

GTA V: one to five stars
The GTA V manual describes wanted status on a one-to-five-star scale. One star represents minor police interest; at five stars, the manual says the National Guard is brought in. The cited manual explains what the display means, but does not establish all the actions or thresholds that cause a wanted level to rise or fall.

GTA Online: a race-event setting
In GTA Online’s Race Creator, the creator can turn the wanted-level setting on or off. Rockstar says enabling it lets police chase participants during the race. This rule is specific to creator-made race events; it does not establish that all GTA Online pursuits use the same setting or behavior.

What changes as the wanted level rises?
In GTA V, the documented distinction is the scale of police interest: the manual labels one star as minor interest and says five stars bring in the National Guard. The cited source does not provide a full star-by-star account of response forces, pursuit tactics, reporting triggers or escape conditions, so a more detailed escalation chart would go beyond what it establishes.
For GTA VI, a 2026 GamesRadar+ report describes six stars appearing in gameplay. The report attributes the system description to Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, rather than presenting a complete official mechanical specification. The reported six-star display should therefore not be read as proof of every threshold or response at each level.
How do crimes reach the police in reported GTA VI gameplay?
Nelson told GamesRadar+ that a crime needs a witness or an alarm to be reported to law enforcement. The report also describes recognition indicators associated with clothing, faces, vehicles and whether the two protagonists are together. These details suggest that what police can identify may matter alongside the crime itself, but the reporting does not spell out every condition, duration or consequence for losing recognition.

- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
The GTA V manual cited here does not document comparable identity tracking or reporting triggers. It is not enough to infer that GTA V either does or does not use those systems; the manual excerpt supports its star display, not a complete comparison of underlying mechanics.
How can players try to escape a pursuit?
Use the situation, not a universal recipe
Nelson’s advice, as reported by GamesRadar+, is that during a three-star pursuit in the city, escaping by vehicle can be difficult; leaving the streets and moving on foot through alleys may be a better option. The report also describes running, changing vehicles and moving through fences as relevant ways to navigate. This is attributed guidance about reported GTA VI gameplay, not an independently tested guarantee that any tactic will work in every pursuit.
The report describes wanted stars changing appearance after direct contact is broken, but the meaning of that visual change is not established as a precise search-state rule. Treat it as a reported interface detail rather than a reliable explanation of exactly what police know or how long a search lasts.

Use Lester to remove a GTA Online wanted level
Rockstar’s GTA Online starter tips say players can call Lester to remove a wanted level for a fee. The tip does not specify the fee amount or all eligibility conditions, so check the in-game option rather than assuming a particular cost or availability.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The documented examples show why “wanted level” is best understood as a game-specific system: GTA V has a five-star display in its manual, a GTA Online race creator can enable police chases for that event, and reported GTA VI gameplay highlights witnesses, alarms and recognition. They do not establish how every other open-world game handles police pursuits, or provide a complete technical account of any GTA game’s law-enforcement simulation.
