Create the source stream, configure FFmpeg with the stream URL and key, then select the Premiere or eligible live stream in the source video’s Customization settings.
What YouTube Live Redirect does—and what FFmpeg does
Live Redirect lets a source live stream send viewers to a Premiere or another channel’s live stream when the source ends. The redirect is configured in YouTube Studio, not in FFmpeg. FFmpeg encodes or forwards the video feed to the source stream using the ingest URL and stream key supplied by YouTube.

YouTube requires the creator sending the redirect to have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. To redirect to another channel’s live stream, you also need permission from that channel. YouTube lets creators manage redirect permissions in Studio under Settings > Community, with options for subscriptions, all channels, or specific channels. See YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions.
Prepare the destination and source stream
Choose the destination first
If viewers will be sent to a Premiere, set it up before configuring the source stream. For another channel’s live stream, confirm that the channel permits your redirect. A destination that is not ready or authorized can undermine the handoff.

Create the source in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the source live stream and open its Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as secret: do not publish it in a command example, screenshot, or log.
- If you have exposed the key, reset it in the stream settings before using it again.
See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. First-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the event day.
Configure FFmpeg to send the feed
Use the right input timing
For a video file, FFmpeg’s -re option reads input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1) and can simulate a real-time feed. For a genuine capture device or an already-live input, do not add -re blindly: FFmpeg warns it can cause packet loss with real-time sources. Follow the timing behavior appropriate to the input. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Use Studio’s URL and key, and validate the output
Configure FFmpeg with the stream URL and key copied from the source stream’s Live Control Room, and choose an output format and encoding supported by YouTube. The exact command depends on your input, installed FFmpeg build, codec, frame rate, and how the key is supplied. YouTube’s documentation does not provide a complete YouTube-specific FFmpeg command, so treat any command found elsewhere as an example rather than an official or universally tested recipe. Do not paste your real key into a public example or a shared log.

Use the ingest URL shown by Studio rather than assuming one fixed endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; check the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the option you intend to use.
Choose encoder settings for your actual feed
Match resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to your source and available upload capacity. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations illustrate why one bitrate should not be treated as universal:
| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed in 2026, for the stated H.264 resolution and frame rate—not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream. YouTube supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

- 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
A two-second interval is a duration, not a universal GOP frame count. If you set a GOP length explicitly, calculate it from the selected frame rate: for example, a two-second interval corresponds to twice the frame rate in frames. Do not copy a fixed -g value without checking the output frame rate. Review the current YouTube encoder guidance for your codec and output.

Set the redirect in YouTube Studio
- In Studio, go to Content > Live and edit the source video.
- Open Customization and add the redirect destination: the prepared Premiere or an eligible live stream.
- Save the change and verify the selected destination on the source video before the event.
When the source stream ends, YouTube presents a confirmation that viewers will be redirected. Tell viewers in advance that the player may reload for a few seconds during the transition. The redirect is a YouTube handoff; it is not an FFmpeg output setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test and monitor before the event
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the event and start it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, as YouTube recommends.
- Preview the feed in Live Control Room. Test representative movement and audio, not just a static opening frame.
- Check stream health and confirm the watch page behaves as expected. If you rely on an archive, verify it afterward; YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
- Keep monitoring stream health during the event so you can address encoder or connection problems before the source ends.
See YouTube’s live streaming tips. The setup lead times and archive threshold are YouTube guidance and operating rules, not performance guarantees.

Troubleshooting
The redirect option is unavailable
Check that the channel sending the redirect meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements: more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. If the destination is another channel’s live stream, verify it has granted permission. Review redirect access under Settings > Community.
FFmpeg connects but YouTube does not show a healthy feed
Confirm that the command uses the URL and key for the correct source stream, that the key has not been reset, and that the output protocol, codecs, resolution, and frame rate match YouTube’s encoder guidance. Preview the feed in Live Control Room and check the encoder’s error output without sharing the key.
A file plays too quickly or a live input drops packets
For a file being sent as a live feed, use real-time pacing where appropriate, such as FFmpeg’s -re. For a genuine capture device or live input, remove it if it is disrupting timing; FFmpeg cautions against using the option with real-time sources.
The destination does not receive viewers when the source ends
Confirm that the redirect was saved on the source video’s Customization page and that the destination is the intended eligible stream or prepared Premiere. Allow a few seconds for the player to reload, as YouTube advises.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than run an FFmpeg setup yourself, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo streams your uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not camera-based live production. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
