Set up paddles on an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 in the Xbox Accessories app: assign each paddle a controller input in a profile, save it, then select that profile with the controller’s Profile button. You can store up to three custom profiles plus the default profile, making it practical to keep different layouts for different games. Check each game’s own controls and test your assignments in play; there is no universal layout that works for every title.
What you need before setting up paddles
- An Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and access to Xbox Accessories.
- An Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows 10/11 PC. Microsoft lists these platforms for the controller’s mapping and profile features: Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 support.
The standard Series 2 package includes four paddles. The Series 2 Core package listing includes the controller and thumbstick adjustment tool, but not paddles; Microsoft lists the Complete Component Pack as a separate way to obtain customization components. How to set up Xbox Elite controller paddles
- Connect and power on the controller. Open Xbox Accessories on your Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows 10/11 PC.
- Choose Configure. Select a profile to edit, or create a profile.
- In the mapping editor, select the paddle you want to change and choose the controller function to assign. Repeat for any other paddles you want to configure. Microsoft describes the profile and mapping flow in its controller FAQ.
- Name the profile after the game or control style—for example, “Racing” or “Shooter”—and save it.
- Launch the game, review its controller settings, and test the paddle assignment in a low-stakes moment. If it conflicts with the game’s controls or feels awkward, return to Xbox Accessories and adjust the profile.
Choosing paddle assignments for common game types
A useful starting point is to map a frequent action to a paddle when reaching for a face button would require lifting your thumb from a stick. The best assignment depends on the game’s available controls and your own habits, so treat these examples as ideas to test rather than guaranteed presets.

Consider assigning a frequently used action to a paddle if the game lets you bind that action to a supported controller button. Check the game’s own control settings: remapping a controller input does not guarantee that every game will handle it the same way.

Racing games
If a racing game supports manual shifting, a paddle can be a convenient place for a shift input. Microsoft uses manual shifting in Forza Horizon 5 as an example of a customized profile matched to a game or loadout in its Series 2 product information.
Switching between saved profiles
The controller can store up to three custom profiles plus one default profile. Press the controller’s Profile button to switch among the saved profiles, then confirm the selected layout before starting a game. This lets you keep distinct control schemes without remapping the paddles each time; Microsoft documents the profile capacity and switching in its product information.

Controller-button remapping versus keyboard mapping
Ordinary paddle remapping assigns controller functions. Keyboard-key mapping is a separate feature with additional limitations: in an Xbox Wire article dated August 3, 2023, Microsoft says keyboard input support varies by game, and mapping keyboard keys over Bluetooth on PC is not supported. Those keyboard-specific restrictions should not be treated as a blanket limit on mapping one controller button to another. See Xbox Wire’s keyboard-mapping instructions.
Removing a paddle
To remove a paddle from the Series 2, rotate it 90 degrees and pull it straight out, following Microsoft’s Elite controller FAQ.

Battery-life note
Microsoft lists up to 40 hours per charge for the Series 2, with actual battery life varying based on usage and other factors. That is a maximum stated on Microsoft’s undated product page, accessed in 2026—not a guaranteed runtime: Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2.
