How does Cloudflare use AI to test its WAF?
In its account of its security architecture, Cloudflare describes frontier models as a way to generate attack payloads and adapt attempts based on how an application or WAF responds. It says it directs testing toward newly launched products, changed application surfaces, and paths likely to attract attackers. The aim is to probe as an adaptive adversary might, rather than rely only on a fixed list of test requests. Cloudflare’s description of its testing architecture does not name the models, give a benchmark, or explain enough implementation detail to reproduce the testing setup.

Model-assisted probes are one input among several. Cloudflare also describes manual red-team work, threat intelligence, observed traffic, proof-of-concept analysis, and signals from its network. The account presents these methods as complementary sources for finding weaknesses, not as an AI-only testing process.

What happens when an AI probe gets through?
- Investigate the gap. Cloudflare says its team examines a successful probe to understand what the existing defenses missed.
- Develop and deploy a mitigation. The team writes a rule or other mitigation and ships it.
- Test again. Cloudflare says it repeats the test to check that the gap has been closed.
This feedback loop connects testing to defensive changes: a successful probe is treated as a finding to investigate and address, then verify. Cloudflare’s public account does not provide a measured attack-success rate or quantify how much the process reduces vulnerabilities.

How do Cloudflare’s WAF, API Shield, and Bot Management work together?
Cloudflare describes these controls as different layers with different signals and jobs. They are not interchangeable, and the following is the company’s description of their roles—not an independent comparison of their effectiveness.

In this layered account, perimeter filtering, API request validation, and detection of probing behavior address different parts of the problem. A request that evades one check may still encounter another; if it gets through, the investigation-and-retest process is intended to feed the finding back into mitigation.

What are Cloudflare Application Profiles?
Cloudflare announced Application Profiles on September 29, 2026, describing them as a positive-security capability. Rather than only matching known-bad requests, positive security starts by learning or defining what valid request structure looks like and identifying deviations. Cloudflare’s Application Profiles announcement discusses this capability in the context of AI-enabled probing risk.

The announcement describes a defensive capability based on request structure; Cloudflare’s separate account of testing does not say that Application Profiles generated or executed the probes.

The published account does not identify a named AI harness or model, provide implementation instructions, report a benchmark or attack-success rate, or establish how a particular customer should configure these controls. Those omissions mean the account explains the approach, but does not independently demonstrate its efficacy for every application or deployment.
