For a comfortable WoW: Forever setup, start with the built-in controls and combat-visibility options that fit how you play, arrange the HUD in Edit Mode, and save a layout. Choose character models and other graphics by comparing them on your own display; the available guides do not establish a universal best preset or measured performance winner.
The menu labels and options described here come from beta-era guides and may change with updates. Recheck the in-game settings if a label or path differs.

1. Set controls and everyday behavior
Open the game’s Settings and review these options first. The preferences below are trade-offs, not requirements: choose the behavior that matches your habits.
Targeting, looting, bags, and camera
- Sticky Targeting: The Mobalytics beta guide describes this as retaining your selected target after you click terrain. Turn it off if you want an environment click to clear your target; keep it on if you prefer the target to persist.
- Auto Loot: The guide describes right-click auto-loot and a modifier-key option. These reduce the input needed to loot; they do not guarantee a particular leveling-time improvement.
- Combined bags: A single inventory view is simpler to scan. Separate bags can be useful if you sort item types into different bags as your inventory fills.
- Camera recentering: The guide says the default recenters the camera behind your character while moving. Choose “Never” if you want freer manual rotation and less automatic recentering.
2. Make combat information easier to read
Use the visibility options that help you make decisions without crowding your screen. The beta guide covers several built-in settings; which ones help depends on your role, group activity, and layout.

Health, resources, and group frames
- Displaying health and resource values as both percentages and numbers can make the same information easier to read in different situations.
- For group play, consider power bars, class colors, and indicators for dispellable debuffs in raid frames.
- Personal resource displays, silhouettes for characters obscured by the environment, and target-of-target information are additional options to try if they solve a visibility problem for you.
Click casting, cooldowns, and nameplates
The built-in interface includes click casting on nameplates and the player HUD, a cooldown manager for cooldown and timer visibility, and configurable nameplates that can highlight important casts. Try these tools before adding interface modifications if your needs are basic, but do not assume they cover every add-on use case.
3. Arrange and save your HUD in Edit Mode
The Wowhead walkthrough is marked for patch 1.60.1. Its documented route is to open the Game Menu with the default Esc key and select Edit Mode. The editor highlights adjustable elements; select one to open its submenu, then drag it into position.

A practical layout sequence
- Open the Game Menu with Esc and choose Edit Mode.
- Select a preset layout as a starting point. Keep the default if you want to get playing immediately; a custom layout gives you more control but takes time to arrange.
- Enable a grid if it helps you line things up. Turn on snap-to-elements while positioning frames and bars if you want them to align with one another.
- Check the editor’s Advanced Options for additional toggles, including the Stance Bar and Extra Action Button, if an element you expect is hidden.
- Create a named layout when you are satisfied. The guide says layouts may be character-specific and can be shared or imported.
If a change appears not to take effect, Mobalytics suggests entering /reload. Treat that as a troubleshooting tip, not a guaranteed fix for every beta build.

Icy Veins describes a choice between SD (Classic) and HD (Retail) character models. You can preview the models during character creation and change the setting later. The guide says the choice affects player characters and NPCs throughout the world; compare both in-game and use the look you prefer rather than treating either as a universal winner.

The graphics guide also describes changes to volumetric fog, dynamic lighting, and water visuals. It does not provide controlled tests, benchmark hardware, measured FPS differences, or a universal graphics preset. If you are adjusting graphics because performance or image quality is not meeting your goals, change one option at a time and compare in the same scene. Keep the combination that works on your hardware and looks right to you.

For controller input, the Icy Veins guide’s route is to enable Gamepad in Settings. The guide describes movement and camera control on the left and right sticks, with controller-oriented hotbars replacing standard hotbars.

That guide describes four bars with eight ability slots each, accessed through button or directional-pad combinations with the triggers; it also notes a tap-trigger option. Nearby interactables can be focused, bumpers can cycle targets, and the Start button opens menus with radial navigation. This is a different input layout from keyboard and mouse, so allow time to learn its bar and menu behavior. The guide does not establish compatibility for any named controller model; check a device listing for PC compatibility rather than assuming a particular model is confirmed for WoW: Forever.
