How to Set Up Wired Android Auto and Switch From Wireless

Connect your phone to an Android Auto-capable USB port while parked, follow the prompts, and check your vehicle manual if Android Auto keeps reconnecting wirelessly.

To use Android Auto over USB, park the car, turn on its infotainment system, connect your phone to an Android Auto-capable USB port with a high-quality data cable, and follow the prompts. If it keeps connecting wirelessly, Google does not document a universal wired-preference switch; check your vehicle manual for model-specific controls.

Check that your phone and car support wired Android Auto

Google lists these requirements for wired use: an Android phone running Android 9.0 or later, an active data plan, an Android Auto-compatible car or stereo, and a high-quality USB cable. A USB port alone does not establish that a vehicle supports Android Auto. If compatibility is unclear, check with the vehicle or stereo manufacturer. See Google’s Android Auto requirements.

Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones, so Google says you do not need a separate Play Store download for use on the car display. Your phone may prompt you to install an update during setup.

Connect Android Auto with a USB cable

  1. Park and start the infotainment system. Complete setup before driving.
  2. Connect the cable. Plug it into an Android Auto-capable USB port in the car and into your phone. Match each connector to the corresponding port.
  3. Follow the prompts. Respond to setup instructions on the phone and the car display. If prompted, install the update and approve the requested setup steps.

Google’s Android Auto setup guide covers the connection process. The vehicle manual can help identify which USB port supports Android Auto.

Switch from wireless Android Auto to wired

Connect the phone to the car with USB and follow the prompts. Google explains wired setup and first-time wireless pairing, but does not document a universal setting that forces every vehicle to prefer a cable. If the car continues to launch Android Auto wirelessly, consult the vehicle manual for controls specific to its infotainment system or pairing behavior.

Wired and wireless projection have different requirements. Google lists Android 9.0 or later, an active data plan, a compatible car and a high-quality cable for wired use. Wireless projection requires a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, as well as a compatible car or stereo; Google’s requirements page states compatibility with phones running Android 11.0. Vehicle support varies, so do not assume that a car supporting one method supports the other.

Choose a cable that can carry data

Not all USB cables work with all cars. Google recommends a high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), without a USB hub or extension, and suggests trying the cable supplied with the phone. A third-party cable may also work if it meets USB Implementers Forum standards; check its certification and make sure its connectors fit both the phone and vehicle.

Troubleshoot a wired connection that will not start

  • Check vehicle support and the USB port. Confirm that the car or stereo supports wired Android Auto and that you are using the appropriate port.
  • Check the infotainment setting. Make sure Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s system, then restart that system.
  • Try another cable. Use a high-quality data cable that fits both devices; if a previously working connection stops, Google recommends trying a replacement cable.
  • Skip hubs and extensions. Connect the phone directly to the vehicle with a short cable.
  • Update an aftermarket receiver. Check the receiver manufacturer’s website for a firmware update.
  • Reconnect to a second car. If setup is failing with another vehicle, Google suggests forgetting previously connected cars and then plugging the phone into the car again.
  • Ask the manufacturer if the problem persists. The car or stereo maker can confirm compatibility and explain model-specific settings.
