To set up a new Surface Laptop, connect it to power, follow the Windows prompts, choose how to sign in and whether to restore or transfer files, then check for Windows and Surface updates. The screens and available options vary by model, Windows version, region, and whether the laptop is managed by work or school.
Before you start
Keep the laptop connected to its power supply while Windows setup runs. Turn it on and follow the instructions displayed on the device; the exact sequence can differ between Surface generations and Windows releases. Microsoft’s general guide covers the initial setup choices: Set up your Surface.

Choose an account and decide what to bring over
Use the account and restore options that fit how you use the laptop. A Microsoft account can provide online storage and online password-reset support. If you are setting up a work- or school-managed Surface, follow your organization’s instructions; ask its IT administrator if you are unsure which account or enrollment process to use.

Restore a previous Windows backup
If you backed up your previous Windows device, Windows Backup may offer to restore that backup during setup. Follow the on-screen choices to select the backup and items to restore.

Transfer files without a backup
If you do not have a Windows backup to restore, Microsoft also points to a file-and-settings transfer route. Choose the available option shown during setup and follow its prompts.
Set up a sign-in method
Windows Hello may let you sign in with facial recognition or a fingerprint, depending on the Surface Laptop’s hardware. To configure or review available methods after setup, open Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Choose a method your device supports, or use another sign-in option.

Decide whether to enable Find my device
Find my device is optional. To enable or check it later, go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Find my device. Microsoft says the laptop needs an internet connection, enough battery power to report its location, and a Microsoft account sign-in for the feature to work.

Once setup is complete, use the Surface app’s Help & support area to check update status and open Windows Update. Install available updates with the laptop connected to power and a stable internet connection. Microsoft recommends checking optional updates after regular updates finish. Availability and rollout timing can vary by model and release; see Microsoft’s Surface driver and firmware guidance for details. Manual driver or firmware installation is an advanced route; most users can use automatic updates.

One model-specific detail should not be generalized: Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 7th Edition update history says critical updates are installed automatically during initial setup for that model. It does not establish the same behavior for every Surface Laptop.

You do not need to make a USB recovery drive to complete ordinary first-time setup. If you later use one to reinstall Windows, Microsoft warns that the process deletes personal files, resets settings, and removes installed apps. Read Microsoft’s Surface reset and recovery instructions before starting, and protect any files you need to keep.
