You can run Urlwatch on a headless Raspberry Pi by installing Raspberry Pi OS Lite, enabling SSH, and installing Urlwatch in a Python virtual environment. The Raspberry Pi itself needs boot media—commonly a microSD card—and a power supply compatible with the model you choose. Urlwatch checks pages when you run it, so unattended monitoring also requires a scheduler.
What you need for a headless setup
- A Raspberry Pi board that suits your network and workload.
- Boot media containing Raspberry Pi OS; a microSD card is a common choice. Check the card’s capacity and speed against the OS image and the board’s requirements.
- A power supply that meets the voltage and current requirements of your specific Pi model.
- A network connection, plus another computer to image the boot media and connect over SSH.
- A card reader only if your imaging computer does not have a suitable one.
A monitor, keyboard, and mouse are not needed for ongoing operation if you can configure SSH during imaging. To keep the setup inexpensive in India, compare the complete cost of board, compatible supply, and boot media—not just a bare-board price—and check what any bundle includes. Current Indian prices, stock, and a definitive cheapest model are not established here, so verify those with sellers before buying.

Install Raspberry Pi OS Lite and enable SSH
Use Raspberry Pi Imager on another computer to write Raspberry Pi OS Lite to the boot media. Lite is suited to an appliance managed remotely because it does not require a desktop environment. In Imager’s configuration, set a hostname, user credentials, network details, and SSH access before writing the image. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation covers imaging and headless access.

- Open the Imager configuration options and set the hostname, username and password, network settings, and SSH access.
- Write the image, safely eject the media, and insert it into the Pi.
- Connect the Pi to power and the configured network. If using Wi-Fi, confirm that both the selected Pi model and the network band are compatible.
- From another computer, connect with SSH using the hostname or network address and the user credentials you configured. If it does not connect, confirm that the Pi has joined the network and that SSH was enabled in the image configuration.
Install Urlwatch safely in a virtual environment
Raspberry Pi OS includes Python 3. On Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm and later, pip-installed packages should go into a virtual environment rather than the OS-managed system Python. Raspberry Pi documents the venv approach in its Python guidance. After connecting over SSH, run:

- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
python -m venv ~/urlwatch-venv
source ~/urlwatch-venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade urlwatch
urlwatch --version
The first command creates an isolated environment in your home directory, the second activates it for the current shell, and the third installs or upgrades Urlwatch there. The final command should print the installed version. Urlwatch documents this install and verification workflow in its installation instructions.
Do not work around the OS restriction with --break-system-packages: Raspberry Pi warns that overriding it can damage the system Python installation or the OS. When invoking Urlwatch later—especially from a scheduler—use the virtual environment’s executable, or activate the environment as part of the scheduled command.

Add a page and understand what Urlwatch reports
Urlwatch can monitor webpages or shell-command output. A run fetches and processes the configured output, compares it with the previous run, and produces a report when it detects a change. Jobs are configured in YAML; a basic job can include a name and URL, while filters can narrow comparisons to meaningful content. See the Urlwatch handbook for job and filter syntax.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Start with one stable page and a simple job containing its name and URL, following the handbook’s current YAML examples.
- Run
urlwatchfrom the activated virtual environment. Treat the first run as the starting point for later comparisons. - Run it again later and inspect the report. If routine page elements create noisy changes, add an appropriate filter and compare the result.
- Only after the basic job behaves as intended, add more pages or shell-command jobs.
Reports can go to the terminal or email, and the handbook lists third-party reporters as well. Email notifications depend on working mail credentials and reporter configuration; do not assume delivery until you test it. The reporter documentation recommends urlwatch --test-reporter email for an email check and --verbose to help investigate reporter problems. Consult the reporter documentation; its configuration details are from an older 2.21 page, so check the current handbook for version-sensitive settings.

Schedule checks for unattended monitoring
Urlwatch is not a continuous real-time watcher: it checks only when invoked. To monitor unattended, configure a recurring scheduler on the Pi. The appropriate service and command syntax depend on your setup, so use the scheduler you manage and verify its command in that environment.
- Make the scheduled command use the Urlwatch executable inside
~/urlwatch-venv, or explicitly activate that environment before running Urlwatch. - Ensure the scheduled account can read the job configuration and write Urlwatch’s state and any report files it uses.
- Run the exact scheduled command manually as that account before relying on it.
- Choose an interval appropriate to how quickly you need to notice changes. A missed run delays detection until a later successful run.
- Back up Urlwatch’s configuration and state before changing or rebuilding the installation.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
externally-managed-environmentduring pip install: The install is being attempted in OS-managed Python. Create and activate the virtual environment shown above, then install Urlwatch inside it; do not use--break-system-packages.urlwatch: command not found: The environment may not be active, or the command may be running outside it. Activate~/urlwatch-venvor call its Urlwatch executable directly.- SSH cannot reach the Pi: Check power, network membership, hostname or address, and the SSH setting configured in Imager. For Wi-Fi, verify model and network-band compatibility.
- No notification arrives: First inspect terminal output. For email, verify the reporter’s mail credentials and configuration, then run
urlwatch --test-reporter email; use--verbosewhen diagnosing errors. - Too many change reports: Page content may include changing elements unrelated to what matters to you. Inspect the diff and use Urlwatch filters to focus on relevant content.
- Scheduled checks do not behave like manual runs: Check that the scheduler uses the intended user, virtual-environment executable, configuration access, and writable state location. Test the full command manually as that account.
