To set up SourceMod MapChooser, install SourceMod and Metamod, move mapchooser.smx from addons/sourcemod/plugins/disabled into addons/sourcemod/plugins, then give SourceMod a valid map pool through addons/sourcemod/configs/maplists.cfg. Add the optional nominations, random-cycle, and rock-the-vote plugins only when you need those features. Finally, restart the server or reload the plugins and test both the nomination menu and the map vote in game.
What MapChooser does
MapChooser is the stock SourceMod plugin that manages the end-of-map vote. It builds a candidate list, accounts for nominated and excluded maps, presents a vote to players, and starts the next map according to the result. It does not create maps or repair an incomplete installation; every map offered to players must already be installed on the server and must appear in the resolved map list.

The installation is modular. The core file is mapchooser.smx. nominations.smx adds player nominations, randomcycle.smx provides random-cycle behavior, and rockthevote.smx adds the player-initiated vote feature generally called RTV. You can run the core vote without enabling every optional plugin.

- A running Source game server with file access, either through its control panel or an SFTP/FTP account.
- Metamod and SourceMod installed and loading correctly. The MapChooser guide lists both as prerequisites.
- A map pool containing only maps whose server files are actually installed.
- Permission to restart the server or reload SourceMod plugins after changing files.
Check the server console or SourceMod startup output before troubleshooting MapChooser. If SourceMod itself is not loading, MapChooser cannot load regardless of where its files are copied.

Install the stock plugins
- Open the server’s SourceMod plugin directory:
addons/sourcemod/plugins. - Locate
mapchooser.smxinaddons/sourcemod/plugins/disabled. - Move or copy
mapchooser.smxintoaddons/sourcemod/plugins. Leaving it inplugins/disabledmeans SourceMod will not load it as an active plugin. - If you want nominations, move
nominations.smxinto the active plugins directory as well. Addrandomcycle.smxfor random-cycle behavior androckthevote.smxfor player-initiated votes. - Restart the server, or reload the affected plugins through the server console or your administration tools.
- Confirm that the plugins are listed as loaded rather than failed. A file in the right directory can still fail if its prerequisites are missing or the file is damaged, so treat a load error as a separate SourceMod installation problem.
Do not activate duplicate copies of the same plugin. Keep one copy in the active directory and archive or remove the duplicate so you know which file SourceMod is loading.
How MapChooser finds the map pool
The most common cause of an empty or surprising vote is not the plugin file; it is map-list resolution. SourceMod uses addons/sourcemod/configs/maplists.cfg to decide which list a plugin should read.
The stock resolution chain
For MapChooser, the mapchooser section targets default. The default section targets mapcyclefile. That server cvar resolves to mapcycle.txt unless the server administrator has set it to another filename. In practical terms, the normal chain is:
- MapChooser asks for the
mapchooserlist. maplists.cfgsends that request todefault.defaultsends it to the file named by themapcyclefilecvar.- The server reads that mapcycle-format file and uses the valid map names it finds.
A section can instead contain a file property that points directly to a map list in mapcycle format. This is useful when you intentionally maintain a separate list rather than using the server’s default cycle.
Fallback behavior
If a requested list is missing or empty, SourceMod falls back to default, and then to the file selected by mapcyclefile. A fallback can make a broken configuration look as if it is working while silently loading an unintended pool. When the vote contains the wrong maps, inspect the complete chain instead of editing only the file you expected MapChooser to use.

What to inspect
- The
mapchoosersection inmaplists.cfg. - The
defaultsection and its target. - The current value of the
mapcyclefilecvar. - The actual mapcycle-format file named by that cvar.
- Any direct
fileproperty that overrides the normal chain.
Keep the spelling and capitalization of each map name consistent with the installed map file. The list should contain map names in the format expected by the game, not web addresses, display labels, or full download paths.
Make the map list valid
Every candidate must exist on the server. A map name in a list does not install the corresponding map; it only asks SourceMod to offer it. Compare each entry with the installed map files and remove entries for maps that are absent.
This check is especially important for nominations. The nominations plugin reads its nominations map list when configuration is executed and fails if it cannot create a valid list. A map may therefore appear in a general cycle file yet remain unavailable for nomination if the resolved nominations list is missing, empty, or points at a different pool.
Use a deliberate list for nominations
Decide whether nominations should draw from the same pool as the vote or from a restricted pool. If they should use the normal pool, make the nominations section resolve to the appropriate default or mapcycle list. If they should use a separate file, give that section a valid file property and maintain that file in mapcycle format.
After changing the list, execute the SourceMod configuration again or restart the server before testing. This ensures nominations reads the new list rather than retaining the previous configuration state.

Enable nominations, random cycle, and RTV

These plugins are independent files. Installing MapChooser does not automatically activate nominations or RTV. Conversely, enabling nominations without a valid nominations list produces an unusable nomination menu even if the main vote works.
Configure nomination behavior
The nominations plugin creates three settings that determine which choices players see:

The two exclusion settings explain why a valid map can be absent from the menu. With both defaults enabled, the current map and maps considered recently played are intentionally hidden. Change these settings only when that behavior fits your server’s rotation; otherwise, an apparently missing map is working as configured.
Test the player and administrator workflows
Player nomination
- Join the server after
nominations.smxhas loaded. - Enter
nominatein chat, or runsm_nominatefrom the game console. - Choose a map from the menu. Only maps in the resolved nominations list and allowed by the exclusion settings can appear.
- Continue playing until MapChooser starts its vote, then verify that the nomination is represented when it is eligible.
If the chat command does nothing, use sm_nominate to separate a chat-trigger problem from a plugin or map-list problem. If both fail, check that the nominations plugin is active and that its list was valid when configuration executed.
Administrator-forced nomination
An administrator can place a map into the next vote with sm_nominate_addmap <mapname>. Replace <mapname> with the exact installed map name. This command does not make an absent map valid; it still depends on a real map and the plugin’s list and vote rules.

Player-initiated voting
With rockthevote.smx active, players can use the plugin’s RTV command to request a vote. The guide describes RTV as a player command for participating in a vote. Test it with an ordinary player account rather than only an administrator account, because command permissions and vote thresholds can differ.
Understand what MapChooser puts into a vote
MapChooser owns the vote and exposes programming interfaces for checking whether a vote can start, initiating one, inspecting nominated and excluded maps, and observing vote-life-cycle events. This matters if another SourceMod plugin integrates with MapChooser.
When an integration initiates a vote without supplying its own input array, MapChooser uses its internal list. That internal list includes nominations and excluded maps according to the MapChooser convars. A custom integration that supplies its own array can therefore produce a different candidate set from the ordinary stock vote.
For a normal server installation, you do not need to write code or call these interfaces. The practical implication is that a valid nomination can influence the stock vote, while a map excluded by the configured rules will not be treated as an ordinary candidate.

Troubleshoot common failures
The vote menu is empty
- Confirm
mapchooser.smxis inaddons/sourcemod/plugins, not only inplugins/disabled. - Inspect the
mapchooseranddefaultsections inmaplists.cfg. - Read the server’s current
mapcyclefilevalue and open the file it names. - Check that the file is in mapcycle format and contains installed maps.
- Restart the server or reload the plugin after correcting the file.
The vote contains unexpected maps
Follow the same resolution chain and look for fallback. A missing or empty requested list causes SourceMod to fall back to default and then to the mapcyclefile target. You may be editing one file while MapChooser is reading another.
A map cannot be nominated
Verify that the map’s BSP is installed and that its exact name is present in the resolved nominations list. The nominations plugin validates map names and rejects maps outside its pool. Also check whether sm_nominate_excludecurrent or sm_nominate_excludeold is hiding it by design.
The current or recently played map is missing
Check the two exclusion settings. Both default to enabled, so a current map or a recently played map can be deliberately omitted even when the file and spelling are correct.
Commands are unavailable
Verify that the relevant .smx file is in addons/sourcemod/plugins, reload or restart after copying it, and confirm that SourceMod reports it as loaded. sm_nominate requires the nominations plugin; installing only MapChooser will not create that command.

Nominations fail after a configuration change
The nominations plugin builds its map list when configuration executes. If the list was missing or invalid at that moment, correct the section or file and execute the configuration again, then reload the plugin or restart the server. Rechecking the file without re-executing configuration can leave the running plugin in its old state.
Stock MapChooser versus MapChooser Extended
Stock MapChooser is appropriate when you need the standard vote and the straightforward maplists.cfg resolution described above. MapChooser Extended is a separate package for servers that need more controls.

Treat Extended as a separate package. Do not copy its map-list path or configuration assumptions into a stock installation, and follow the installation instructions for the particular Extended release you deploy. Mixing the two packages can make it unclear which plugin owns the vote or which map file is being read.
A repeatable deployment checklist
- Metamod and SourceMod load before MapChooser.
mapchooser.smxis in the active plugins directory.- Optional
.smxfiles are enabled only for features you intend to use. maplists.cfghas validmapchooser,default, and, when needed,nominationssections.- The
mapcyclefilecvar points to the file you expect. - Every listed map is installed and spelled exactly as the game expects.
- The server was restarted or the changed plugins were reloaded.
nominateandsm_nominateopen a menu for a normal player.sm_nominate_addmap <mapname>works for an authorized administrator.- The resulting vote contains the intended pool and respects current/recent-map exclusions.
When to use managed hosting
A managed Source game-server host can simplify the file-transfer, restart, and console steps, but the plugin requirements do not change. Before choosing a host, verify that it supports the exact Source game you run, provides access to addons/sourcemod and configs/maplists.cfg, exposes plugin reload or restart controls, and documents its uptime terms. MapChooser itself is server software, not a physical product.
