To run RollCage 2022 Race DS on a Space Engineers dedicated server, install the scenario files in the server’s Mods directory, copy its Mission01 world into Saves, and edit the copied XML so every path points to the server’s filesystem. Crossplay requires this manual file-transfer process because a PC/console session cannot download Steam Workshop content directly.

The procedure below applies to a Windows Space Engineers Dedicated Server (SEDS). It covers PC-only and crossplay deployments, the exact folders and XML entries that must agree, and the checks to perform when the world does not load.

What RollCage 2022 Race DS actually installs
RollCage is not just a conventional gameplay mod. It is a Workshop scenario/world package. A working server therefore needs two related pieces:
- Scenario files in the server’s
Modsdirectory. - A playable world save in the server’s
Savesdirectory.
Copying only the mod folder leaves the server without the world to start. Copying only the world leaves its scenario references unresolved. The XML inside the save also contains paths that may still point to the computer used to download the Workshop item, so those paths must be changed before startup.

A dedicated server runs one world at a time. The RollCage save must therefore be the active session selected by the server; installing the files alone does not switch an already-running server to that world.
Choose PC-only or crossplay before copying files

Crossplay is the important exception. A crossplay server cannot fetch the RollCage Workshop item from Steam, so even a host that offers a Workshop field in its control panel still needs the local-download and upload workflow described below.

Install the Windows dedicated-server components
Install Space Engineers Dedicated Server (SEDS) on Windows through Steam Tools or SteamCMD. The official dedicated-server requirements list .NET Framework 4.8 and the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable as prerequisites. Install those before troubleshooting the scenario itself.
Plan for at least 6 GB of RAM, the listed minimum for SEDS. The documented recommended dedicated-server baseline is 10 GB of RAM. These are general SEDS figures, not a RollCage-specific performance guarantee; no authoritative RollCage player-count or performance statistic is published.
Back up before editing
Stop the server and make a complete copy of its current server files, especially the existing Mods, Saves, and configuration files. XML mistakes can prevent a world from loading, while a backup lets you restore the previous session without rebuilding it.

Prepare a transfer method
For a self-hosted machine, copy the files directly. For managed hosting, use the provider’s file manager or SFTP access. You need to upload directories while preserving their contents and names; do not compress the files in a way the server cannot read, and do not place an extra outer folder above the expected directory.

- On a PC with Steam, subscribe to the RollCage 2022 Race DS scenario in the Space Engineers Workshop.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading the item completely.
- Identify the downloaded Workshop item by ID
3048708110. Use the Steam Workshop content location on that PC and open the item’s folder. - Keep the original downloaded folder available until both the mod and world copies have been transferred successfully.
If the destination is crossplay, this PC is only the download and staging machine. The server still needs its own local copies; it will not resolve references to the downloader’s Steam or AppData directories.
Step 2: Create the server’s RollCage mod directory
- On the server, open the Space Engineers server base directory.
- Create a directory named
Mods/RollCage 2022 Race DS. Preserve the capitalization and spaces. - Upload the contents of the downloaded Workshop item into that directory.
The result should be the scenario’s files directly inside the RollCage mod directory, not a second nested copy such as Mods/RollCage 2022 Race DS/3048708110/RollCage 2022 Race DS. If your transfer tool displays an additional wrapper folder, open it and copy the files from the level that contains the scenario content.
Step 3: Create the save from Mission01
- Create
Saves/RollCage 2022 Race DSon the server. - From the downloaded scenario package, open
Scenarios/RollCage 2022 Race DS/Worlds/Mission01. - Upload everything inside
Mission01intoSaves/RollCage 2022 Race DS.
Files such as Sandbox.sbc and, where present, Sandbox_config.sbc should be directly in the save directory. Do not leave them one level deeper in a second Mission01 folder.
The world-folder name supplied by the scenario can differ between packages or revisions. If the folder you use is not named RollCage 2022 Race DS, use your chosen name consistently in the save path and in the session configuration described next.

Step 4: Rewrite the paths in Sandbox.sbc
Open the copied save’s Sandbox.sbc with a text editor that preserves XML formatting. Find the <CampaignPaths> section and the <LocalModFolder> entry.
Replace the downloader’s local base path
The scenario may contain an absolute path from the PC that downloaded it. In each relevant path, replace the local computer portion before Mods with the actual base path used by the server. The path must resolve to the server’s own Mods directory, not to a user profile, Steam library, or AppData directory on the staging PC.
If you are unsure of the server base path, inspect the server’s LastSession.sbl and use the existing server path shown there as your reference. Do not copy a path from the downloader’s LastSession.sbl; the useful value is the one generated by the destination server.
Update both required references
Check both the scenario reference and the localization reference. The path for the RollCage scenario must point into the server’s Mods tree, and the path ending in Localization/Common.sbl must use the same server-side base path. Updating only one of these entries can produce a missing-file or failed-load error even when the folders appear correct.
Save without changing XML structure
Keep the existing tag names, quotation marks, and XML hierarchy. Change path values only. Save the file in place, then reopen it once to confirm the editor did not append an extra file extension such as .txt.

Step 5: Make SessionName match the save folder
If the save directory is exactly Saves/RollCage 2022 Race DS, the supplied session name may already be correct. If you renamed the directory, open Sandbox_config.sbc in that save and edit <SessionName> so its value exactly equals the save-folder name.
For example, a folder called Saves/RollCageRace requires a session name of RollCageRace, including the same capitalization and spaces. A mismatch can make the server ignore the copied world or create a different session instead of loading the intended save.

Step 6: Select the save and start the server
- Stop any currently running Space Engineers server instance.
- In the server’s session or world-selection controls, choose the RollCage save as the active world. A dedicated server loads one world at a time.
- Start the server and wait for world initialization to finish before joining.
- Check the server log for confirmation that the save loaded and that the RollCage files were found.
- Connect from a permitted PC or console client and verify that the race world, spawn point, and scenario content appear as expected.
On a PC-only server, you may instead use the host’s Workshop controls to install the scenario, then select the corresponding save. For crossplay, retain the manually uploaded files and do not rely on a server-side Steam subscription to supply them.

Troubleshooting failed starts and missing content
The server says a file or mod is missing
Confirm that the files are inside Mods/RollCage 2022 Race DS and not inside an extra nested folder. Compare the directory contents with the downloaded Workshop item, then verify that Sandbox.sbc points to the server’s path before Mods. A path that still contains the downloader’s local user profile is wrong for the server.
The world is visible but does not load
Check that the Mission01 contents were copied directly into the save directory and that Sandbox.sbc is present there. If you changed the save-folder name, make the same change in Sandbox_config.sbc under <SessionName>. Select that save explicitly as the active world; the server will not switch worlds merely because a new folder exists.
Localization or campaign data fails
Reopen Sandbox.sbc and inspect both references under <CampaignPaths>. The scenario path and the Localization/Common.sbl path must point to the server filesystem. Correcting only <LocalModFolder>, or correcting only the localization path, leaves the other reference broken.

Crossplay clients cannot join
Verify that the server is configured for crossplay and that the scenario was uploaded manually. Crossplay cannot obtain Steam Workshop content directly. Test the server with the uploaded files in place rather than assuming a Workshop subscription on the host will populate them.
Startup fails after an edit
Stop the server, restore the backup if necessary, and compare the edited XML with the original. Look for a malformed tag, an accidental character in a path, or a text editor that changed the file extension. Then inspect the dedicated-server logs at the locations documented for SEDS. Logs are the authoritative way to distinguish a missing file, an invalid path, and a general server startup failure.
The scenario worked once and fails after an update
Recheck the current Workshop download identified by item ID 3048708110, recopy changed files, and compare every path in the save again. Keep the previous working copy until the updated world has started successfully. The available documentation does not establish a compatibility matrix for every Space Engineers build, so a build-specific failure should be treated as an issue to isolate through the logs rather than assumed to be a required plugin.

Choose self-hosting when direct filesystem and log access matter most. Choose managed hosting when you value a control panel, restart tooling, or provider-assisted operations, but confirm that the plan permits manual scenario uploads and gives you access to the save and log files needed for troubleshooting.

Keep a copy of the original Workshop download, the working server-side mod folder, and the working save. Record the exact save-folder name and the server base path used in Sandbox.sbc. Before replacing files, stop the server and back up the current state. After every update, start the server without players first, inspect the logs, and only then open the session to the community.
The Bottom Line
A reliable RollCage 2022 Race DS deployment requires both the uploaded mod files and the Mission01 save, with every XML path rewritten for the destination server. Crossplay always uses the manual PC-download and server-upload method; PC-only servers may use Workshop installation controls. Match SessionName to the save folder, select that save as the active world, and verify the logs before players join.
