How to Fix a WordPress Site Redirecting to a Parked Domain

A registrar-branded parked page usually means the request is failing before WordPress runs. Check the domain’s renewal and hold status, authoritative nameservers, DNS records, and hosting assignment first. Only after the request reaches your server should you change WordPress URLs or investigate .htaccess, server rules, plugins, or a possible compromise.

What a parked-domain redirect usually means

A parked page is not the same as a WordPress redirect. A registrar placeholder generally indicates that the domain is expired, suspended, placed on hold, or still delegated to parking nameservers. In those cases, the browser may never reach your hosting account or WordPress application.

WordPress.com support says an expired domain commonly displays a parked page during a grace period of about 10 days to two weeks. If the domain progresses further into redemption, it can eventually stop resolving and produce an error such as DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN. The site’s files and content are not automatically deleted merely because the domain expires, but the public address stops working.

A different pattern is more concerning: your real site loads first and then sends visitors to another domain, or only certain visitors, devices, referrers, or search-engine users are redirected. That points to a web-server, CDN, plugin, theme, or malware rule rather than ordinary registrar parking.

The distinction matters because the remedies have very different risks. Renewing a domain or correcting an authoritative record is normally reversible. Editing production files, deleting a redirect plugin, or replacing code can destroy evidence and introduce new errors. Begin with the lowest layer that can explain what visitors see.

Identify exactly what visitors receive

Before changing anything, capture the page title, destination URL, HTTP status, response headers, affected path, and time of the event. Check from a normal browser and from a second network or device. Classify the response:

Only selected visitors, URLs, devices, or referrers redirect Conditional rule or possible malware Preserve evidence and begin a compromise investigation

A registrar page that looks identical on every device usually indicates a domain-level problem. An unfamiliar commercial or malicious destination after your branding appears is a separate incident. Save screenshots and the exact destination even if the page later disappears; conditional redirects can be intermittent.

Step 1: Confirm the domain is active

Check registration, payment, and holds

  1. Sign in to the registrar that controls the domain.
  2. Verify that the domain is paid and marked active, not expired, in grace, redemption, clientHold, or serverHold.
  3. Confirm the registration has not been suspended for verification, abuse, or an unresolved payment.
  4. Check the expiration date and the exact nameservers currently assigned to the domain.

If the domain has expired, renew it through the registrar. If it has entered redemption, use the registrar’s restore process; fees and timing vary by top-level domain and provider, so there is no universal restoration price or deadline. WordPress.com says a recently expired domain can show a parked page for roughly 10 days to two weeks before later lifecycle stages produce a resolution failure.

Namecheap’s current support guidance says that reactivation during a grace period can require approximately 24–48 hours for DNS-related services to return. WordPress.com says a recently renewed domain may take hours and up to 72 hours to update across networks. These windows do not guarantee recovery if the domain remains on hold or points at the wrong nameservers.

Do not repeatedly edit WordPress while the domain is expired or on hold. Those changes cannot correct a request that never reaches the host. If the registrar requests identity, payment, or abuse verification, complete that process and retain the confirmation for your incident record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Verify authoritative nameservers and DNS records

Find the DNS provider that is actually authoritative

The registrar account may display a secondary DNS screen, but the authoritative nameservers determine which records the internet uses. Identify the nameservers listed for the domain, then open the DNS zone at that provider. If you recently moved hosts, the domain may still point to the former provider or to parking nameservers.

Pay particular attention after a registrar transfer, a hosting migration, or a nameserver change. A record edited at the wrong provider has no effect, even when the interface reports that it was saved. Record the authoritative nameservers before making any change so you can explain which zone was modified and when.

Compare records with the hosting provider

Record the exact values supplied by your host and compare them with the authoritative zone:

  • A record: the IPv4 address of the intended WordPress server.
  • AAAA record: the IPv6 address, if your host provides one. A stale AAAA record can send IPv6 visitors to the wrong server even when the A record is correct.
  • CNAME record: the hostname required by some managed or cloud hosts, commonly for www or a platform endpoint.
  • www and apex behavior: confirm that both the bare domain and www resolve as your host expects.

Do not change records blindly. First establish which nameserver is authoritative and copy the host’s required spelling, trailing dot, and record type. Remove or correct stale parking records only after you know which zone controls the domain. Do not create competing records simply because one hostname fails; ask the host whether the apex should use an A record, an ALIAS-style feature, or another supported arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow for propagation

After renewal, nameserver changes, or record edits, different resolvers can retain old answers until their TTLs expire. WordPress.com gives a maximum of up to 72 hours for a recently renewed domain to update everywhere; Namecheap describes approximately 24–48 hours for DNS services after reactivation during its grace period. These are guidance windows, not guarantees, and a misconfigured zone will not fix itself by waiting.

Test from more than one network while waiting, and compare the result with the host’s temporary URL. Avoid making several contradictory edits during propagation; document each change and its time so an old cached answer is not mistaken for a new configuration failure.

Step 3: Confirm the domain is assigned to the right site

Even correct DNS can reach the wrong virtual host. In your hosting control panel, verify that the domain is attached to the intended site, document root, or add-on-domain entry. Check that the selected site contains the expected wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes directories.

Also check whether the host has a separate default site for unassigned domains. If your domain reaches that default site, the server may show a host-generated placeholder that resembles parking even though DNS is correct. Correct the domain assignment before changing WordPress files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the host supplies a temporary URL, open it. When the temporary URL displays your site but the custom domain displays a registrar page, the fault is above WordPress: registration, DNS, or host routing. When both URLs show the same wrong redirect, continue to server and application checks.

Step 4: Check WordPress URL settings after traffic reaches the server

Verify the database URLs

Back up the database before editing it. In the WordPress options table (often named wp_options, with a custom prefix on some installations), inspect:

Both values should use the intended scheme (https when TLS is configured) and domain, with no old host, parked domain, accidental path, or trailing variation that conflicts with your deployment. If you cannot access the dashboard, use your host’s database tool or a carefully reviewed SQL update, then clear page and object caches.

Do not change both values to a temporary host just to make the dashboard load. That can create another migration and may break media, login cookies, or canonical links. Use the permanent public domain that the host and certificate are configured to serve.

Inspect wp-config.php

Look for forced URL constants such as WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL. Remove stale values only after recording them and confirming the replacement. Search for:

  • An old domain left over from a migration.
  • HTTP forced on a site now served through HTTPS, or the reverse.
  • The RELOCATE constant.

WordPress migration guidance warns that leaving RELOCATE enabled is insecure because an attacker can use it to change the site URL. It should not remain enabled on a production site. Keep a copy of the original configuration outside the web root and check file permissions after editing.

Step 5: Account for a reverse proxy or CDN

A load balancer, reverse proxy, or CDN can overwrite the HTTP_HOST value that WordPress uses to build links and redirects. WordPress’s installation FAQ documents this failure mode and explains that the intended host may need to be explicitly restored in wp-config.php for the deployment.

Check the proxy configuration for the following:

  • The original host header is forwarded unchanged, or is mapped to the canonical domain.
  • HTTPS is communicated with the appropriate forwarded-protocol header.
  • HTTP-to-HTTPS and apex-to-www redirects point to your real domain, not the former host.
  • CDN page rules, workers, edge functions, and cached redirects have been reviewed and purged after correction.

Do not hard-code a host value copied from an example unless it matches your own canonical domain and proxy design. A proxy fix that ignores the trusted-host boundary can create a host-header security problem, so involve the hosting or CDN provider when you are unsure which headers are trusted.

Step 6: Inspect .htaccess, web-server, and plugin rules

Preserve the current file first

Download the current .htaccess and keep an untouched copy before editing. WordPress.org describes this file as the mechanism Apache uses to manipulate how files are served from the document root and subdirectories. Its hacked-site FAQ calls .htaccess one of the files attackers most often modify.

Compare the WordPress rewrite block

A standard Apache setup generally resembles this baseline (your host may add legitimate directives outside the WordPress block):

RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
# END WordPress

Look for redirects to the parked domain, encoded or obfuscated PHP, unfamiliar rewrite conditions, rules outside the # BEGIN WordPress and # END WordPress markers, and additional .htaccess files in parent or subdirectories. Do not assume that deleting .htaccess alone removes a hack; it may only hide one symptom while a backdoor remains elsewhere.

Check every redirect layer

  • Apache virtual-host configuration and Nginx server blocks.
  • Hosting-panel redirect tools.
  • CDN page rules, workers, and edge redirects.
  • Security, cache, redirection, and SEO plugins.
  • Theme files, especially header.php, footer.php, and functions.php.
  • Must-use plugins and scheduled tasks.

If you suspect a plugin rule, rename the plugins directory temporarily only when you have a rollback path and console or file-manager access. If the redirect stops, restore the directory and reactivate plugins one at a time, testing after each change. Do not leave all plugins disabled as a permanent fix; identify the offending component and replace or reconfigure it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 7: Treat unexplained or selective redirects as a possible compromise

WordPress’s common-errors guidance says that after configuration and hosting checks, the site may have been hacked and recommends a malware scan such as Sucuri SiteCheck. Selective redirects are particularly suspicious because attackers commonly condition them on search referrers, mobile devices, cookies, geographic locations, or specific paths.

High-impact files to review include .htaccess, index.php, theme header and footer files, and functions.php. Also inspect uploads, must-use plugins, the database options table, posts, users, administrator accounts, and scheduled tasks for unfamiliar code or content. Unknown administrator accounts, newly created scheduled tasks, obfuscated PHP, and files with timestamps that do not fit a deployment are escalation signals.

A clean browser test does not prove that the site is safe. Conditional code can spare logged-in administrators while redirecting search visitors, or it can run only on a particular URL. Treat every unexplained selective behavior as an incident until a trusted scan and file comparison explain it.

Containment and recovery sequence

Use this order so that cleanup does not destroy evidence or leave an attacker’s access intact:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the incident. Save redirect destinations, timestamps, affected URLs, HTTP status codes, response headers, screenshots, and relevant access logs.
  2. Preserve a copy. Take a full file and database backup, or a forensic copy, before deleting or overwriting anything. Keep it separate from the cleaned site.
  3. Scan all layers. Scan the database and the complete filesystem, including wp-content, uploads, must-use plugins, themes, options, posts, and scheduled tasks.
  4. Replace rather than patch. Download WordPress core, plugins, and themes from trusted official sources and replace suspicious files. Compare files with clean repository versions where possible instead of deleting one visible snippet.
  5. Rotate every related credential. Change hosting-panel, SFTP/FTP, database, WordPress administrator, registrar, CDN, and email passwords. Invalidate active sessions and rotate API keys.
  6. Review accounts and access. Remove unknown users, check administrator roles, inspect recent login activity, and verify that no unauthorized SSH keys or FTP accounts remain.
  7. Harden the installation. Update WordPress, PHP, plugins, and themes; restrict file editing; protect wp-config.php; enforce strong unique credentials and multifactor authentication where available; and add a web application firewall.
  8. Clean search results last. If spam URLs were indexed, request search-engine cleanup only after the site and accounts are clean.

Keep the original backup offline or access-controlled. Restoring an old copy without changing compromised credentials can simply restore the attacker’s access. If the host supplies a malware-remediation service, ask what it preserves, replaces, and guarantees before authorizing destructive cleanup.

Choose the least destructive fix that explains the symptom

Question Domain/DNS correction Server or WordPress correction Security response
Where does the redirect occur? Before the request reaches your host At the web server, proxy, CDN, or WordPress Often inside a conditional rule or modified file
Who is affected? Usually everyone using the domain Often every request, depending on the rule May target selected paths, devices, referrers, or visitors
Is the fix reversible? Yes: restore status, nameservers, or records Usually: restore configuration from a verified backup Preserve evidence before replacement or deletion
What evidence supports it? Expired status, parking nameservers, wrong A/AAAA/CNAME, or host assignment Wrong home/siteurl, proxy host, or redirect rule Unknown files, users, scheduled tasks, obfuscated code, or selective behavior

Start at the lowest layer that accounts for the behavior. Correcting a parked domain is safer than rewriting WordPress files; replacing compromised files is safer than repeatedly editing an unknown payload. In every branch, retain a clean copy and document each change.

Prevent the redirect from returning

  • Enable registrar auto-renewal and keep payment and verification contacts current.
  • Record the authoritative nameservers and the host’s required DNS values in an internal runbook.
  • Monitor certificate validity, DNS changes, domain status, and uptime from outside your hosting network.
  • Keep WordPress, PHP, plugins, and themes updated and remove software you no longer use.
  • Limit administrator accounts, use unique passwords and multifactor authentication, and disable unused FTP or control-panel users.
  • Retain offline backups of both files and databases and test restoration.
  • Review CDN, proxy, hosting-panel, and WordPress redirect settings after every migration.
  • Log administrator changes and investigate any new rewrite rule, scheduled task, or executable file that you did not create.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my WordPress site show a registrar parking page?

The domain is commonly expired, suspended, on a clientHold or serverHold status, or still delegated to parking nameservers. Check registration status and authoritative DNS before changing WordPress.

Will my WordPress files be deleted when the domain expires?

Not necessarily. WordPress.com says expiration stops the public address from working, but the site files and content are not automatically deleted merely because the domain expired. Renew or restore the domain through the registrar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long will a renewed domain take to work?

WordPress.com says updates can take hours and up to 72 hours across networks. Namecheap describes approximately 24–48 hours for DNS-related services after reactivation during a grace period. A hold or incorrect nameserver can require additional correction.

Why does the temporary hosting URL work while my domain is parked?

That pattern indicates the WordPress installation is probably reachable and the problem is above it: domain status, nameservers, DNS records, or the host’s domain assignment.

Which WordPress settings should I check after DNS is fixed?

Check the database home and siteurl values, forced WP_HOME or WP_SITEURL constants, stale domains, scheme mismatches, and the insecure RELOCATE constant in wp-config.php.

Could a redirect to another domain mean my site was hacked?

Yes, especially when your site loads first or only selected visitors, devices, referrers, or paths are redirected. Preserve logs and a full backup, scan files and the database, inspect .htaccess and high-impact theme files, replace suspicious software from trusted sources, and rotate all related credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will deleting .htaccess fix a hacked redirect?

Not reliably. Attackers often modify .htaccess, but backdoors can remain in core, themes, plugins, uploads, the database, or scheduled tasks. Preserve the file, investigate every layer, and do not treat deletion as complete remediation.

What should I do if only Google visitors are redirected?

Treat the selective behavior as suspicious. Record the referrer, destination, headers, and affected URLs, preserve a copy before editing, and investigate conditional server, CDN, plugin, theme, and malware rules.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A registrar-style parked page usually points to domain status, nameservers, DNS, or host assignment—not WordPress. Confirm those layers first, then check home/siteurl, proxy handling, and redirect rules. If the redirect is selective or unexplained, preserve evidence, scan the entire installation, replace compromised files from trusted sources, and rotate every related credential before declaring the site clean.
