Yes, the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless can be connected to a Windows PC for Steam and non-Steam games, but the documented setup is through its included 2.4G receiver or a USB cable. 8BitDo’s current Steam-optimized controller list does not name the Ultimate 2C Wireless, so you should not assume a model-specific Steam Input profile, special button support, or Steam Deck compatibility. Connect it to Windows first, then verify what Steam Input and each game actually expose on your installation.
What the Ultimate 2C supports on a Windows PC
The Ultimate 2C Wireless has two manufacturer-documented Windows connection methods:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- 2.4G wireless: use the included USB receiver.
- Wired USB: connect the controller directly with the included cable.
The product specifications list Windows 10 and later as supported, while the instruction manual is more specific: Windows 10 version 1903 or later. If your computer runs an older Windows release, update it before troubleshooting the controller.

The product information lists Bluetooth for Android, while Windows connectivity is listed as 2.4G and wired. Therefore, do not plan on pairing the Ultimate 2C to a Windows PC over Bluetooth based on the available manufacturer documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The retail package includes the controller, 2.4G adapter, USB cable and instruction manual. You do not need to buy a separate wireless receiver or cable for either documented setup. A computer without a suitable USB port may require a compatible port adapter, but that adapter is not part of the controller package.
Set up 2.4G wireless mode
This is the cable-free Windows procedure described in the manual.
- Move the controller’s rear mode switch to 2.4G.
- Insert the included 2.4G receiver into an available USB port on the Windows PC. Connect it directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub if you are diagnosing a connection problem.
- Press the controller’s Home button to turn it on.
- Wait for Windows to recognize the controller. A successful connection is indicated by a status LED that remains solid.
Once Windows has recognized the device, launch the game or launcher you want to use. The controller’s Windows mode is intended to present the input expected by PC games; individual games can still differ in which buttons they display or accept.
If the receiver does not connect
- Confirm that the rear switch is on 2.4G, not another mode.
- Remove and reinsert the receiver, then press Home again.
- Try another USB port, especially if the first port is on a hub or front-panel extension.
- Check whether the status LED becomes solid. A rapidly flashing or unlit indicator means the connection has not completed.
- Close software that may be taking exclusive control of another gamepad, then restart the game.
These checks address the physical connection only. They do not establish that a particular game has a working controller layout.
Set up a wired USB connection
Wired mode avoids the 2.4G receiver and is useful for initial diagnosis, firmware work or a desktop PC with unreliable wireless USB reception.
Rank #2
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Connect the controller to the Windows device with the included USB cable.
- Wait for Windows to recognize it.
- Look for the status LED to remain solid, which the manual identifies as the successful-connection indication.
- Start Steam, another launcher or the game you want to play only after Windows has finished recognizing the device.
The manual’s instruction is: “Connect the controller to your Windows device via a USB cable, wait till the controller is successfully recognized by your Windows device, and the Status LED will remain solid to indicate a successful connection.”
A wired connection does not require the 2.4G adapter and does not depend on wireless pairing. It also does not change the limits of a game’s own controller support or prove that Steam will provide an Ultimate 2C-specific configuration.
Does it work with Steam Input?
The careful answer is: Windows can recognize the Ultimate 2C through the documented 2.4G or USB methods, but 8BitDo does not currently list this exact model among the controllers it identifies as optimized for Steam.
8BitDo’s Steam compatibility information lists the Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad, Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller, Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad and SN30 Pro Bluetooth Gamepad. The displayed list does not include the Ultimate 2C Wireless. That omission matters because the similarly named Ultimate 2 Wireless is not the same product as the Ultimate 2C Wireless.
The manufacturer also describes a Steam Input API mode separately from XInput mode. That explanation applies to the Steam compatibility offering described on the manufacturer’s page; it is not an Ultimate 2C-specific certification or profile. Do not transfer button mappings, special features or compatibility promises made for another controller to the Ultimate 2C.
Rank #3
- Compatible with Windows 10 and above, Android 9.0 and above. Mode switch button. 2.4G and wired for Windows, Bluetooth for Android. Ensure you update to the latest firmware.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Designed for personalized configuration to help you react faster in games. No software needed. Turbo function.
- 1000Hz* polling rate under both 2.4G and wired connections ensures precise, low-latency responsiveness.
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Hall Triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Steam may still detect a Windows gamepad and allow you to configure it. The available layouts, prompts and remapping behavior can depend on the game, Steam client, connection mode and the controller identity Windows reports. Because no model-specific result is established here, treat Steam’s own controller screen as a verification step rather than a guaranteed outcome.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to check the controller in your Steam installation
Use this process after completing either the 2.4G or wired setup. The labels can change as Steam updates, so use the current wording shown in your client.
- Connect and power on the controller before starting the game.
- Open Steam and open Settings.
- Open the controller-related settings page. Depending on the current Steam interface, this may be labeled Controller or Controller Settings.
- Look for a section showing detected controllers or Steam Input support. Confirm whether Steam sees an active gamepad.
- Open the game’s controller properties or per-game controller configuration and inspect the available layouts.
- Choose a layout only if the displayed controls match what the game expects, then test every important button and both sticks in the game.
If Steam does not show the Ultimate 2C, first close the game, reconnect the controller, and restart Steam. Test the same controller in Windows with a second game or the operating system’s game-controller test before concluding that Steam is the cause. If Windows itself never recognizes it, return to the physical setup and pairing steps instead of changing Steam mappings.
Using it with non-Steam games and other launchers
Non-Steam support is not one universal switch. A game must recognize the controller input mode exposed by Windows, and its launcher or in-game settings may need to be configured separately.
Direct-launch PC games
Connect the controller, wait for the solid status LED, start the game and open the game’s input settings. Select a gamepad or controller option if the title provides one. Check movement, camera control, triggers, bumpers, face buttons, menu buttons and any paddles or auxiliary controls the game offers. A game may show generic button labels even when the controller is working correctly.

Games started through another launcher
Keep the launcher open only if the game requires it. Some launchers provide their own controller settings; others leave detection entirely to the game. If the title does not respond, test the same connection in a different PC game. This separates a controller-recognition problem from a title-specific limitation.
Adding a non-Steam game to Steam
Adding a shortcut to Steam can provide access to Steam’s per-game configuration interface, but it does not certify the Ultimate 2C or guarantee that the game will accept the resulting inputs. After adding the shortcut, inspect the game’s controller settings in Steam and test the controls in the title itself. If the game already has a native controller mode, compare its behavior with the Steam-configured mode and keep the one that exposes the controls you need.
2.4G versus USB: which connection should you use?
| Factor | 2.4G wireless | USB cable |
|---|---|---|
| Required hardware | Included 2.4G receiver and an available compatible USB port | Included USB cable and a compatible USB port |
| Initial setup | Set the rear switch to 2.4G, plug in the receiver, press Home and wait for a solid LED | Plug in the cable and wait for Windows recognition and a solid LED |
| Freedom of movement | Wireless, subject to receiver placement and local interference | Limited by cable length and cable routing |
| Best diagnostic use | Normal cable-free play after pairing | Confirming whether a wireless problem is actually a Windows or game problem |
| Documented Windows mode | Yes | Yes |
Both modes are documented for Windows. Neither table entry should be read as a promise of model-specific Steam Input optimization; that question must be checked in the current Steam client and the game you intend to play.
Re-pair the 2.4G receiver
Re-pairing is appropriate when the receiver and controller no longer connect, or when the receiver needs to be paired again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Set the rear mode switch to PC/2.4G.
- Power on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s Pairing button for three seconds.
- Release it when the controller LED begins flashing rapidly.
- Connect the 2.4G receiver to the Windows device.
- Wait for both the controller and receiver LEDs to become solid. That indicates successful pairing.
If the LEDs do not become solid, repeat the procedure with the receiver connected directly to the computer. Make sure the controller remains close enough to the receiver during pairing and that the mode switch has not been moved to a different position.

Firmware and Ultimate Software
The manual directs owners to 8BitDo support for Ultimate Software V2 and firmware information. The support listing captured for this guide reports Ultimate 2C Wireless firmware v1.09, described as fixing a ghost Home-button input in XInput mode and enhancing 2.4G stability.
Firmware listings can change, so treat v1.09 as a dated listing rather than a permanently current version. Before updating, open the official 8BitDo support page, identify the exact Ultimate 2C Wireless model and check the newest release notes. Do not install firmware intended for the Ultimate 2 Wireless or another controller with a similar name.
Safe update practice
- Use a reliable USB connection during any firmware operation.
- Keep the controller connected until the updater reports completion.
- Do not interrupt power or disconnect the cable while firmware is being written.
- After updating, reconnect the controller and retest the Home button, 2.4G pairing and the game that previously failed.
If you are not experiencing the ghost Home-button symptom or wireless instability, read the current release notes first; an update should be tied to a documented fix or compatibility need rather than treated as a guarantee of Steam support.
Specifications that affect setup decisions
The following figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests.
| Specification | Manufacturer-stated figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Polling rate | 1000 Hz | Listed for 2.4G and wired connections; not independently tested here |
| Battery capacity | 480 mAh | Rechargeable battery specification |
| Charging time | Two hours | Stated manufacturer charging time |
| Play time on 2.4G | 19 hours | Manufacturer ideal-environment laboratory figure |
| Play time on Bluetooth | 32 hours | Manufacturer ideal-environment figure; Bluetooth is listed for Android, not Windows |
| Windows support | Windows 10 and above | The manual specifies Windows 10 version 1903 or later |
| Android support | Android 9.0 and above | Bluetooth is listed for this platform |
Battery runtime depends on conditions, and the Bluetooth runtime figure does not describe a Windows connection. The polling-rate number likewise does not prove lower input latency in every game or establish Steam compatibility.
Troubleshoot by symptom
Windows does not recognize the controller
- For 2.4G, verify the switch position, receiver connection and Home-button power-on sequence.
- For USB, reconnect the cable and try another compatible port.
- Wait for the status LED to become solid before opening the game.
- Try the other documented Windows mode. If USB works but 2.4G does not, re-pair the receiver.
Steam sees no controller, but Windows does
- Quit the game and restart Steam with the controller already connected.
- Inspect Steam’s controller settings and the individual game’s controller properties.
- Test another Steam title to determine whether the issue is limited to one game.
- Do not assume that a missing Ultimate 2C entry means the physical connection failed; the manufacturer’s displayed Steam-optimized list does not name this model.
The game opens but buttons do nothing
- Open the game’s input settings and select its controller mode if available.
- Check whether the game expects a gamepad rather than keyboard-and-mouse input.
- Test a second game. If only one title fails, consult that title’s controller requirements rather than changing firmware immediately.
- Check Steam’s per-game layout only when launching through Steam, and test the final mapping in gameplay.
The Home button triggers an unexpected input
Check the current Ultimate 2C Wireless firmware listing. The captured v1.09 entry specifically describes a fix for a ghost Home-button input in XInput mode. Because firmware releases can change, verify the latest version and notes on 8BitDo’s support page before applying an update.
The wireless connection drops
- Move the receiver to a different USB port and avoid an unpowered hub.
- Re-pair the receiver using the three-second Pairing-button procedure.
- Check for the solid LEDs that indicate successful pairing.
- Compare 2.4G with a wired connection. If the cable is stable, the problem is localized to wireless pairing, receiver placement or 2.4G conditions.
What you can and cannot conclude about compatibility
- Established: the manual documents Windows setup over the included 2.4G receiver and USB cable.
- Established: the package includes both the receiver and cable.
- Established: the product page lists Bluetooth for Android and 2.4G/wired connectivity for Windows.
- Not established: a model-specific Ultimate 2C Steam Input optimization profile.
- Not established: special Steam button support, universal compatibility with every launcher or game, or Steam Deck compatibility.
For a Windows player, the practical decision is straightforward: use 2.4G when you want the included wireless setup, use USB when you want the simplest connection or a diagnostic baseline, and verify Steam Input behavior in the exact games you play rather than relying on the name “Ultimate” or on compatibility information for a different 8BitDo model.
