Samsung Keyboard calls text replacement shortcuts Text shortcuts. Create a short trigger and its saved phrase in keyboard settings, then type the trigger and tap the phrase in the suggestion bar to insert it. The feature is separate from predictive text and Auto replace.
How to add a text shortcut in Samsung Keyboard
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management.
- Tap Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Tap More typing options.
- Tap Text shortcuts.
- Tap +.
- Enter a short trigger in the shortcut field and the full phrase in the expanded-phrase field, then tap Add.
To use it, open a text field and type the trigger. When the expanded phrase appears in the predictive-text bar, tap it to insert the phrase. Samsung’s documented workflow requires selecting the suggestion; it does not describe guaranteed silent expansion. Samsung UK’s instructions note that menu paths and availability can vary by device and software version.

What if the Text shortcuts setting is missing?
Menu labels and locations differ across Galaxy models and software releases. On some older devices, Samsung’s alternate route is Settings > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Smart typing. You can also open Samsung Keyboard settings from the keyboard’s settings icon or search Settings for Text shortcuts. The exact route depends on your device and software version.

Text shortcuts, predictive text, and Auto replace are different
| Setting | What it does | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Text shortcuts | Connects a trigger you define with a saved expanded phrase. | Type the trigger, then select the expanded phrase in the suggestion bar. |
| Predictive text | Suggests words as you type. | Select a suggested word if you want to use it. |
| Auto replace | Replaces words; Samsung says you can accept a replacement with Space or Enter. | Type the word and accept the replacement as prompted. |
These controls are separate Smart typing features in Samsung Keyboard. Turning predictive text on or off is not the same as creating a text shortcut. Samsung’s Galaxy keyboard settings guide explains the distinct options.

How to delete a text shortcut
Return to Text shortcuts in Samsung Keyboard settings and use the delete or bin control for the shortcut you want to remove. The control’s appearance can vary by software version. Samsung’s keyboard features guidance covers shortcuts alongside other typing options.
