To set up Streamlabs Desktop, install the app, connect your streaming account, create a scene, add the game or screen you want to show, select your audio devices, and test everything before going live. You can use a built-in microphone or skip the webcam; neither an elaborate overlay nor a paid plan is required for a basic stream.
Before you install Streamlabs Desktop
Check Streamlabs’ current system requirements against your computer and the kind of stream you plan to make. The listed minimums are Windows 11 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB of RAM. Streamlabs recommends stronger hardware for demanding games, animated overlays, or advanced plugins. Requirements can change, so check the page for your operating system before installing.

Streamlabs says an upload speed of 3.6 Mbps or better is suitable for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. Treat that as guidance, not a universal minimum or a guarantee: the platform, resolution, frame rate, and stream content all affect what connection you need. Streamlabs recommends Ethernet where possible.

- Listen for muted devices, very low levels, or audio that is unexpectedly loud or distorted.

- Confirm the connected platform account and the destination selected in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Check the preview, microphone meter, desktop-audio meter, and any alerts you added.
- Close or hide anything you do not intend to show, including private windows and notifications.
- Use Streamlabs Desktop’s go-live control and follow the prompts to start the broadcast. Check the platform’s live page or dashboard to confirm the stream is actually visible.

Troubleshooting common first-stream problems
- The camera is missing or black: Check that Streamlabs has camera permission, that the correct device is selected in the Video Capture Device source, and that another application is not using the camera.
- The microphone meter does not move: Confirm the selected input in audio settings, check that the mic is not muted, and verify operating-system permissions and device connections.
- Game or screen capture is blank: Confirm you chose the appropriate source, selected the intended game, window, or display, and that the source is visible in the scene.
- There is no game or desktop sound: Check the selected desktop-audio device, its mute state, and whether audio is registering on its meter. Recheck with a short recording.
- An alert does not appear: Confirm the Alert Box source is in the active scene, its account is connected, and the alert test is enabled in the alert settings.
- The stream will not start or looks unstable: Verify the selected platform account and destination, then check your connection and the platform’s current streaming requirements. Streamlabs’ 3.6 Mbps guidance applies to 720p at 30 fps for most platforms, not every configuration.
