To put two cameras, gameplay and a webcam, or another combination on one YouTube livestream, build the split-screen scene in an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that composed output to YouTube. In OBS, add each input as a source, arrange and crop the sources on the canvas, configure the YouTube stream key, and test the picture and audio before broadcasting.
This is different from YouTube’s horizontal-and-vertical live option: that feature presents a stream in 16:9 and 9:16 formats for different viewers; it does not create a multi-panel scene for you.

What you need before setting up the layout
Use OBS Studio or another encoder when you need to combine and position separate video sources. YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for broadcasts using overlays and external camera or microphone hardware. You do not need to buy those devices if your existing sources—such as a game capture or display capture—meet your needs.
- A YouTube channel eligible to go live: YouTube’s current help guidance says the channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- An encoder: Install OBS Studio and make sure the computer can capture and encode the sources you intend to use. OBS’s overview guide explains scenes, sources, stream settings, transforms, audio, and testing; its screenshots and labels may differ from newer versions.
- Sources appropriate to your layout: A camera source requires an available camera; gameplay may use game capture, window capture, or a capture device, depending on the setup. Display capture, images, and text can also be sources.
- A stable upload connection and an audio plan: More sources and higher frame rates can increase computer and connection demands. Decide which microphone or source audio should be heard, and test intelligibility rather than assuming every source should be audible.
YouTube’s cited eligibility page does not establish a universal 24-hour wait after verification, so do not treat that as a guaranteed current requirement.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Choose a composition that fits the content
Think first about what viewers need to see, then allocate canvas space. Two people in a conversation often suit equal panels. Gameplay with commentary usually works better with gameplay as the main panel and the presenter in a smaller picture-in-picture window. For screen-plus-camera instruction, keep the screen large enough for labels and details to remain readable.
| Layout | Useful for | Check before going live |
|---|---|---|
| Two equal panels | Two speakers or two comparable camera views | Align the dividing edge and check that neither face is clipped. |
| Main panel plus picture-in-picture | Gameplay, a presentation, or a demonstration with a presenter camera | Keep the small panel clear of important interface elements and captions. |
| Screen plus camera | Tutorials, walkthroughs, or commentary | Confirm on a phone-sized preview that text in the screen capture remains legible. |
For every layout, check framing on a small display, choose whether source audio should be mixed or muted, and consider the load on your computer and upload connection. A horizontal composition may not translate cleanly to a vertical crop; plan separately if you intend to use YouTube’s dual-format feature.

Set up a split-screen stream in OBS
- Confirm YouTube live eligibility. Verify the channel and check YouTube Studio for any live-streaming restriction. YouTube’s stated minimum age for streaming is 16.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live. In Live Control Room, prepare the stream details and choose the encoder workflow to access the server and stream-key information. Interface labels can change, so follow the current controls shown in your account.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: enter it only in OBS’s stream settings, and do not show it in a screen capture, overlay, or broadcast. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s current controls to replace or reset it.
- Create an OBS scene. In the Scenes panel, add a scene for the broadcast layout. A scene is the composition; its sources are the individual video, image, text, or audio inputs within it.
- Add each input as its own source. In the Sources panel, add the relevant camera, game capture, window capture, display capture, capture device, or other input. Choose the source type that matches the material you want to show. You do not need a new camera or capture card for sources your computer can already capture.
- Arrange and crop the panels. Select a source in the preview and use its bounding box to resize and position it. Hold Alt while dragging an edge to crop that source. For a two-person layout, position one source on each half of the canvas; for gameplay plus presenter, make gameplay the large panel and place the camera in a smaller area.
- Set overlap and source order. Sources higher in OBS’s Sources list can cover sources below them. Put a picture-in-picture camera above the gameplay or screen source; move it lower if another layer should cover it. Lock sources once they are positioned to reduce accidental movement.
- Check canvas, output, and frame rate. Choose a base canvas resolution that fits the composition, then set a suitable output resolution and frame rate in OBS’s video settings. There is no single correct bitrate or resolution for every channel: use YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected format and account for encoder capability and available upload capacity. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps; test system performance before choosing it.
- Set audio deliberately. In OBS’s audio settings and mixer, confirm the intended microphone and other audio devices are active. Listen for clear speech, unwanted duplicate audio, clipping, or game audio overpowering the speaker. Mute sources that should not be heard.
- Connect OBS and preview in YouTube. Select YouTube as the service in OBS’s stream settings, use the appropriate server option, and enter the stream key. Start the encoder feed, then check Live Control Room to confirm the expected picture and audio arrive. Use a private or unlisted test when appropriate, and confirm the current audience and event settings before making the broadcast public.
- Go live and monitor. Start the broadcast using the current Live Control Room workflow. Watch source visibility, audio balance, dropped frames, and chat while streaming. When finished, end the broadcast in YouTube’s current Live Control Room controls.
Test common layouts before the public broadcast
Two cameras side by side
Add both cameras as separate sources in one scene. Resize and position each to occupy one side of the canvas, then check eye lines, headroom, lighting, and the center seam. If one camera is mirrored or framed differently, adjust that source rather than distorting the whole scene. Confirm which microphone is active and whether camera audio should be muted.
Webcam and gameplay
Add game capture, window capture, or another suitable gameplay source as the main panel, then add the webcam above it in the source order. Resize the webcam to a corner that does not obscure important game information. Check that game audio and voice are both audible at sensible levels.

Screen and presenter
Make the display or window source large enough for viewers to read the material, then add the camera as a smaller panel. Check a mobile-sized preview: tiny menus and text can become unreadable even when they look fine on the creator’s monitor.
Split-screen composition versus YouTube dual-format live
YouTube’s simultaneous horizontal and vertical feature is a separate presentation option. Its help guidance describes a horizontal 16:9 format and a vertical 9:16 format. By default, vertical can be a center crop of the horizontal feed; available editing-canvas choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. Viewers in the Shorts feed see the vertical presentation, while other viewers see horizontal; YouTube says both formats share one live URL and chat.
Rank #4
- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
To edit both presentations through a third-party encoder, YouTube’s guidance says to choose Encoder and RTMP(S), use the second stream key for vertical, and send each format to its matching key. The vertical format cannot be added after streaming has started, so configure and preview it beforehand. The cited guidance also says analytics for only the vertical stream become available 24 hours after the stream; that is analytics timing, not an eligibility waiting period. See YouTube’s current live-stream guidance for availability and interface details.
OBS controls which sources appear together in a scene; YouTube’s dual-format controls how the stream is presented in horizontal and vertical formats. A horizontal split-screen may crop badly in vertical, so inspect both compositions and reposition panels before going live.

Troubleshoot before and during the stream
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check that the correct YouTube service/server and stream key are selected in OBS, and that the intended event is open in Live Control Room. Re-enter the key privately if needed; never display it while diagnosing.
- A panel is missing or covered: Confirm the source is visible and active, then inspect the Sources order. A higher source can obscure one below it. Check that the source has not been moved outside the canvas.
- A camera or capture input is absent: Confirm the correct source type and device are selected and that another application is not preventing access. Check the source’s visibility and preview before restarting the broadcast.
- The layout is cropped or distorted: Reposition or resize the source using its bounding box; use Alt-drag on an edge to crop. Avoid stretching the image to force a fit, and check the canvas/output aspect ratio.
- Viewers cannot hear speech or hear duplicate sound: Check the intended microphone in OBS audio settings and mixer, make sure it is not muted, and mute redundant device audio. Listen to the test stream rather than relying only on the local meter.
- Video stutters or frames drop: Reduce workload by testing a lower output resolution or frame rate, closing unnecessary applications, or simplifying the scene. OBS warns that 60 fps can require more system resources than 30 fps. Also check whether the upload connection can sustain the encoder’s selected settings.
- The vertical presentation looks wrong: Preview the vertical canvas separately and adjust its layout before starting. The default center crop can remove content near the horizontal frame’s sides.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos around the clock, rather than a live composition from cameras and a computer, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free StreamNeo day.
Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Only broadcast video and audio you have the rights or permission to use, including music, gameplay footage, and material shown inside screen captures. Adding panels or commentary does not by itself establish permission. Before a public stream, review YouTube’s current policies and any restrictions shown in Live Control Room; eligibility to stream is separate from whether particular content is permitted.
