On Fabric and Forge, the server setting is generated at config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties. Set its port= value to the UDP allocation exposed by your host, firewall, and router, restart the server, and verify that the startup log reports that same port.

What you need before installing
Simple Voice Chat is client-and-server software. A server-only installation is not enough: each participating player must also install a compatible client mod. Compatibility is determined by the Minecraft version and mod loader, not merely by the fact that both computers have “Simple Voice Chat.”

- A precise Minecraft version: write down the exact version the server runs, including any minor or point release.
- The loader: identify whether the server uses Fabric or Forge. Download the corresponding loader-specific Simple Voice Chat file.
- Server access: you need permission to place a file in the server’s
modsdirectory, start it, stop it cleanly, and edit its generated configuration. - A reachable UDP port: voice traffic uses UDP on a separate port from the normal Minecraft connection. The documented default is
24454, but a host may assign a different number. - Network control: on managed hosting, you need an additional network allocation; on a self-hosted machine, you need access to the operating-system firewall and, when applicable, the router’s port-forwarding controls.
Release listings change over time. For example, the CurseForge listing reported Simple Voice Chat 2.6.24 for Minecraft 26.3 on September 20, 2026, with separate Fabric and Forge files. Treat that as a dated listing, not a permanent “latest” instruction: select a file whose stated Minecraft version and loader exactly match your server.
Install the matching mod on the server and clients
1. Identify the server’s loader and version
Check the server startup command, launcher profile, or hosting-panel software selector. Record both values before downloading anything. A Fabric server requires the Fabric build; a Forge server requires the Forge build. If the server and client use different Minecraft versions, or if one uses Fabric while the other uses Forge, replace the files rather than trying to work around the mismatch.

2. Choose one compatible Simple Voice Chat file
Use the project’s release listing and filter by the exact Minecraft version and loader. Do not choose a file solely because its number is newer. The server and all clients should use the same compatible Simple Voice Chat release unless the project’s compatibility notes explicitly allow another combination.
3. Install the server file
- Stop the server before changing its files.
- Copy the selected Simple Voice Chat mod file into the server’s
modsdirectory. Keep the file’s extension and name intact. - Start the server once. This first run lets the mod create its configuration directories and files.
- Wait until startup has finished, then stop the server cleanly. A clean stop ensures the generated configuration is written before you edit it.
4. Install the client file for every player
Each player opens the same loader profile and Minecraft version used by the server, then places the matching client mod in that profile’s mods directory. Every person who needs voice chat must do this on their own computer. A player without the client mod may still be able to connect to the game, but Simple Voice Chat will not establish that player’s voice connection.

Keep a copy of the exact server file name and version when distributing instructions to your group. Updating only the server, or only one player’s client, creates a version-parity problem that can look like a network failure.
Configure the server’s UDP voice port
Find the generated property file
After the first start, open:
config/voicechat/voicechat-server.propertiesThis is the normal server configuration path for both Fabric and Forge. Open it with a plain-text editor while the server is stopped. Find the line beginning with:
port=The project documents UDP port 24454 as the default. You may leave that value only when your hosting environment and network can expose UDP 24454 to the server. The number in this file is the port that voice clients must reach; it is not automatically the same as the Minecraft game port.

Managed hosting: create a separate allocation
Many managed hosts expose only the game allocation until you request another one. In the hosting panel, create or request a separate network allocation for voice chat and note the port number the host assigns. The Modrinth hosting guide’s workflow creates this allocation before editing the property file.
- Open the host’s network, allocations, or additional-port page.
- Create an allocation that supports UDP for the server.
- Copy the assigned port exactly; do not substitute the Minecraft game port.
- With the server stopped, edit
config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties. - Replace the value after
port=with the assigned number. For example, if the host gives you 30123, the line should beport=30123. - Save the file and start the server.
If the host does not offer an additional UDP allocation, ask support whether one can be added. A voice configuration that points at an unallocated port cannot work, even when the mod itself loads correctly.
Self-hosted server: open and forward the port
For a server on your own computer or dedicated machine, choose an unused UDP port, then make it reachable at every network layer:
- Set that number after
port=in the generated properties file. - Create an operating-system firewall rule allowing inbound UDP traffic on that port.
- If the server is behind a home router, forward the same UDP port to the server machine’s internal address.
- Make sure the router forwards UDP, not only TCP. A TCP rule for the same number does not satisfy the voice requirement.
Keep the game port and voice port as separate entries in your notes. Changing one does not change the other, and forwarding only the game port leaves voice packets blocked.
Save a known-good configuration
After editing, record the chosen port, the host allocation (if any), and the firewall/router rule. If you later migrate hosts or regenerate configuration files, this record lets you compare the intended value with the live one instead of guessing.

Start the server and verify the port
Start the server after saving the property file and watch the startup console. Simple Voice Chat should print a line equivalent to:
Voice chat server started at port <allocation-port>Compare the number in that message with both the port= line and the host’s UDP allocation. All three must agree. If the console reports a different number, stop the server, correct the property or allocation, and start it again. Do not proceed on the assumption that the panel’s displayed port is the one the mod actually bound to.
The console check distinguishes a configuration problem from a client problem. A correct startup line proves that the mod read a port value and started its voice service; it does not by itself prove that a firewall, router, or external host has allowed packets through.
Connect from the Minecraft client
Join with a matching installation
Launch the same Minecraft version and loader used by the server, with the matching Simple Voice Chat client mod installed. Join the server normally. If the client and server files are compatible and the UDP port is reachable, the voice interface should become available in-game.

Open the Simple Voice Chat in-game GUI using its configured keybind. In the voice settings, choose the microphone and output device you actually want to use. Use the built-in microphone test before trying to talk to other players. This catches an operating-system input selection problem without confusing it with a server connection problem.

Test with another player
Have another player with the same compatible client join. Test speaking and receiving audio while both players are online. If the interface appears but no audio passes, return to the port and startup-log checks before changing unrelated Minecraft settings.

The fundamental procedure is identical on both loaders: select the exact Minecraft-version build, install it on the server and clients, let the server generate its configuration, set a reachable UDP port, and verify the startup message. The differences are the loader-specific mod file and the surrounding server platform’s directory and networking controls.

Because releases change, compare exact Minecraft-version support before comparing loader names. A Fabric file for one Minecraft release is not a substitute for a Forge file for another release, even if both are described as “current.”

Troubleshoot “voice chat not connected”
1. Confirm that the server mod loaded
Look through the server startup output for Simple Voice Chat’s initialization and its “started at port” line. If neither appears, stop the server and check that the file is in the correct mods directory and matches the server’s loader and Minecraft version. A missing or incompatible server mod must be fixed before network testing.
2. Confirm the client mod and parity
Verify that the affected player has the client mod in the active profile, not in a different Minecraft installation. Compare the player’s Minecraft version, loader, and Simple Voice Chat build with the server’s. Replace either side with matching builds when they differ.
3. Compare every port value
Read the value after port=, the host allocation number, and the number in the startup message. If any value differs, stop the server and correct the property or allocation. A port mismatch is a configuration error, not a microphone fault.
4. Check that the port is UDP
Ensure the host allocation, operating-system firewall rule, and router forward all specify UDP. Also verify that the rule applies to the voice port rather than only to Minecraft’s game port. The project documentation warns that without opening the voice port, voice chat will not work.

5. Check host limitations
Some managed plans expose no second UDP allocation. Ask the host for an additional UDP port and use the number it provides in voicechat-server.properties. Changing the file to an arbitrary number that the host has not allocated cannot make the service reachable.
6. Re-test after one change at a time
Restart the server after changing the property, allocation, or mod files. Then rejoin with one known-compatible client and test the microphone. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to tell whether the fix was a version correction, a port correction, or an audio-device correction.
Safe upgrades and migrations
When changing Minecraft versions
Choose a Simple Voice Chat release explicitly listed for the new Minecraft version and loader. Update the server and every client as a coordinated change. Start the server once so the mod can validate or regenerate configuration, then re-check the port= value and the startup line before inviting players back.
When changing loaders
Moving from Forge to Fabric, or from Fabric to Forge, requires the loader-specific mod file on both server and clients. The shared configuration path and UDP workflow remain familiar, but the surrounding server installation and panel controls may change. Treat the migration as a new compatibility check rather than copying a loader-specific file across.
When changing hosts
Request the new host’s UDP allocation first, then update the property file to that assigned number. Recreate any firewall or router rule that applied only to the old machine, start the server, and compare the new console line with the new allocation. Players should reconnect only after that three-way comparison succeeds.
