To turn on Screen Time on your own iPad, go to Settings > Screen Time > App & Website Activity, then tap Turn on App & Website Activity. To manage a child’s iPad, either set up controls on the child’s device or use Family Sharing to manage them from your own Apple device. The right controls depend on your family’s needs, and options can vary by iPadOS version, age, and region.
Choose how to set up a child’s iPad
There are two setup routes. Family Sharing lets an organizer or parent/guardian manage a child’s Screen Time from their own device. Alternatively, you can configure Screen Time directly on the child’s iPad. The Family Sharing route requires the child to have their own Apple Account in the family group; Apple advises against sharing an adult’s account with a child.

Turn on Screen Time on your own iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Tap App & Website Activity.
- Tap Turn on App & Website Activity.
After activation, review the sections for activity reports, schedules, app limits, communication controls, and content restrictions. Apple’s iPadOS 26 Screen Time guide documents this personal-device path.

Manage Screen Time through Family Sharing
- Confirm the child has their own Apple Account and is part of your Family Sharing group. Age rules for child accounts vary by country or region.
- On your own Apple device, open Settings > Screen Time.
- Under Family, select the child’s name.
- Set up the controls you need, such as Downtime, App Limits, Communication Limits, or Content & Privacy Restrictions.
If the child is not listed, check that the correct Apple Account is in the family group. If you choose direct setup instead, configure Screen Time on the child’s iPad; the available setup screens depend on its software version.

Downtime and App Limits
Downtime schedules periods when device use is limited, and can be customized by day. App Limits set time limits for selected apps or categories. Review what remains usable during restricted periods before relying on a schedule.

Communication Limits
These controls manage who can contact the child during specified periods. Consider the child’s emergency and health needs before restricting availability. Apple cautions that if Messages is not always allowed, the child may be unable to send or receive messages—including to emergency numbers and contacts—during Downtime or after an app limit expires.

Screen Time passcode and Communication Safety
Set a Screen Time passcode to help prevent a child from changing the controls. Also review Communication Safety and whether it is enabled on the child’s device; its availability and behavior can vary.

Share Across Devices determines whether Screen Time settings and reports sync across iPhone, iPad, and Mac signed in to the same Apple Account. When it is on, schedules and limits apply across those devices; when it is off, each device keeps separate Screen Time settings. If a limit seems to affect another device, check this setting before changing the limit.
Expect differences by age, region, and iPadOS version
Apple says Communication Safety and web-content limits turn on by default when setting up a device for a child under 18, but the age rule varies by country or region. A child’s birth date also informs suggested content restrictions. Defaults and available controls are therefore not identical for every family. Review the options shown on the iPad you are setting up, and use the instructions for its installed iPadOS version.
