To manage a child’s account through Family Sharing, select the child in the Family Member menu, choose Set Up Screen Time For Your Child, and follow the prompts. You can configure time limits, content and privacy restrictions, and a Screen Time passcode; the options shown depend on the macOS version and account setup.
Before you begin: choose an account and management route
If your child shares a MacBook Neo with other people, give them a separate Mac user account and Apple Account. Apple recommends this so the child’s apps and information remain separate from other users’.

For parent or guardian access from another device, use Family Sharing. If your family does not use Family Sharing, you can still configure Screen Time by signing in to the child’s account on the Mac and setting it up there.
| Setup route | How it works | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Family Sharing | A parent or guardian manages the child’s settings through the Family Member menu. Apple describes this as the flexible route for managing a child’s usage remotely. | Use it when the child has their own Apple Account and you want to manage settings from a parent or guardian’s device. |
| Child’s Mac account | Sign in to the child’s account on the Mac and configure Screen Time there. Apple’s Mac instructions support this route when the family does not use Family Sharing. | Use it as a local setup option when Family Sharing is not in use. |
Set up Screen Time on the MacBook Neo
- Sign in to the child’s Mac user account if you are setting controls locally. For Family Sharing management, sign in to the Mac with an Apple Account and use the parent or guardian’s Family Sharing group.
- Open Screen Time: choose Apple menu > System Settings > Screen Time.
- Select the child: if the Family Member menu appears, choose the child’s name.
- Start the setup: select Set Up Screen Time For Your Child, then follow the onscreen instructions. The setup can offer App & Website Activity, scheduled downtime, content restrictions, Communication Safety, and a four-digit Screen Time passcode.
- Review and adjust the controls after setup. Labels and available options can vary with macOS, account role, and which Screen Time features are enabled.
Apple’s instructions are general Mac instructions, rather than a separate MacBook Neo procedure. Apple identified macOS Tahoe as the Neo’s launch operating system in its March 4, 2026 announcement; check the version installed on your own Mac because it may have changed since launch.

Choose the controls your family needs
Set schedules and app limits
Use Downtime to schedule periods when app use is restricted, and App Limits to set time limits for apps or categories. These controls address when or how long apps can be used; they are separate from restrictions on content.
Restrict content, web access, and changes
Under Content & Privacy, Apple documents controls for browsing and gaming, store and media content, apps and device features, privacy changes, and preferences. Select the restrictions that suit your child rather than assuming a single setting covers every way to reach online content. The available controls depend on the account and enabled features.

Review activity and safety options
App & Website Activity provides activity reporting and enables related Screen Time options. The child setup flow may also offer Communication Safety. Which options appear can depend on the operating system and account configuration.
Require a passcode for settings changes
Use Manage Screen Time or Lock Screen Time Settings, where available, to require the Screen Time passcode before settings can be changed or extra time granted. Choose a passcode the child does not know; it is distinct from the Mac account password.

MacBook Neo and newer family controls: check OS versions
Apple’s 2026 support material describes an updated parental-controls experience for macOS 27 and corresponding family-device operating systems. Apple says the updated experience requires all applicable devices in the Family Sharing group to run iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, or visionOS 27. A MacBook Neo’s model name alone does not mean it has macOS 27 installed.
If every family device cannot be updated to the required version, Apple says families can continue with the previous Screen Time and parental-controls experience, or adjust controls directly on the child’s device. Do not assume a new shared control will appear until the family’s devices meet its version requirements.

If the Family Member menu or setup option is missing
- Check Apple Account sign-in: Screen Time options can depend on whether the Mac is signed in to an Apple Account.
- Check Family Sharing: Apple advises confirming that Family Sharing is in use if the Family Member menu is absent.
- Check the account role: parent or guardian status in the Family Sharing group affects which options are available.
- Check App & Website Activity: some Screen Time settings depend on this feature being on.
- Look for version differences: compare the installed macOS and the labels currently shown in System Settings; the exact options vary by version and configuration.
Apple’s general setup instructions for Mac are available in its Screen Time setup guide. Its Mac guide to Content & Privacy restrictions describes the categories those controls cover, and its instructions for locking Screen Time settings explain the passcode protection option.
