For focus, start with restrained or ambient tracks; for relaxation, try delicate, calm-feeling music; for immersion, look for a distinctive atmosphere and a sense of narrative. Sample both quiet and intense passages before settling on an album or playlist: a soundtrack’s shifts can support your listening or pull your attention away.
Start with the listening goal
These are practical listening heuristics, not evidence that a particular soundtrack improves concentration, lowers stress, or produces a measurable benefit. Personal response matters: music that feels soothing to one listener may feel gloomy or distracting to another.

For focus or studying
Try music with restrained energy, ambient textures, or gentle repetition, and pay attention to how often the sound changes sharply. University of Central Florida Associate Professor of Music Theory Will Ayers recommends Fez for working, reading, and studying, describing it as suitable for a deep study session. He also points to Antichamber for its ambient soundtrack and expansive soundscapes, and UCF describes Stardew Valley as offering calming tunes suited to a day’s work. These are Ayers’s and UCF’s recommendations, not proof of a general cognitive effect. Read UCF’s study-listening recommendations.
Before committing to a full album, listen to a quiet passage and a more energetic one. If the changes keep interrupting your reading or writing, try a less dynamic soundtrack or make a playlist from its quieter tracks.

For relaxation
Look for delicate textures, slower-feeling passages, or sounds that you personally find calm. Ayers describes Flower as a relaxing listen, noting that its delicate soundtrack and interactive audio align with the music as it unfolds. He also recommends Stardew Valley for its calming tunes. If you prefer a darker atmosphere, sample Limbo with care: Ayers says its soundtrack can haunt as well as comfort, so it may not suit every listener’s idea of relaxing. UCF’s soundtrack recommendations offer more context.
For immersion
Choose music whose atmosphere, timbres, and emotional tone hold your interest and help you imagine a place or story. Composer Bobby Krlic said he wanted the Returnal soundtrack to work as a standalone experience: “the mystery, the journey, the payoff.” He explained that the album drew on the game’s narrative and presented pieces in a different order and form from their in-game appearance. That was Krlic’s creative aim for the release, not a guaranteed reaction from every listener. Read PlayStation’s interview with Krlic.

Compare tracks by the qualities that affect your listening
When choosing between albums—or deciding which tracks to put in a playlist—compare these features:
- Intensity and contrast: Does the energy stay fairly even, or do loud, tense passages arrive often?
- Texture and density: Is the sound sparse and ambient, gently melodic, rhythmically busy, or orchestral and full?
- Change over time: Does the music loop steadily, evolve gradually, or shift in response to game events?
- Mood and associations: Does it feel soothing, curious, melancholy, ominous, triumphant, or suited to another mood you want?
- Album flow: Does the released album work as a coherent sequence, or would selected tracks suit your activity better?
These are listening criteria, not objective rankings. Game scores can be dynamic rather than fixed: composer Winifred Phillips describes Spyder using short ambient pieces during exploration and layered action music that builds momentum as play progresses. An album’s transitions and peaks may therefore feel different from the quieter stretches heard during gameplay. Phillips discusses the approach in a GameDeveloper interview.

Check what kind of soundtrack release you are choosing
A soundtrack album is not necessarily a literal copy of the score as encountered in the game. Krlic said the Returnal release used “a unique set of mixes created especially for the format.” That distinction matters if you want music designed to flow as an album rather than reproduce the game’s changing audio.
Release formats and access can vary by title and region. In a September 9, 2022 announcement, FromSoftware lead sound designer and composer Tsukasa Saito described the Elden Ring soundtrack as a 67-track album available on streaming services worldwide. Treat that as information about the release at that time; check the service you use for current and regional availability. Read Saito’s PlayStation announcement.

Physical editions may appeal to collectors or listeners who want a record, but they are not necessary for enjoying a soundtrack. PlayStation’s 2016 announcement for Bound documented digital and vinyl editions; it does not establish current stock or price for that or any other release. Search for the exact game soundtrack and edition, and verify availability where you live. See the official Bound soundtrack announcement.

The recommendations above are qualitative judgments by a music professor and descriptions from composers and publishers. The cited sources do not provide a named statistic showing that game soundtracks improve focus, relaxation, or immersion. Use the examples to decide what to sample, then judge the result by your own response and the task at hand.
