Check the current official eligibility list for your exact trip, then complete the device-specific preparations below while you still have ordinary connectivity.
Check whether your phone and destination are supported
Before changing settings, verify both device eligibility and destination availability. Apple and Google maintain separate availability lists, and support for one platform does not establish support for the other. A country on a list is not a guarantee of a connection at every location or in every situation.

- iPhone: Apple says Emergency SOS via satellite requires iPhone 14 or later and is available in the countries on its current Emergency SOS via satellite support page. Check the minimum iOS version shown for your destination. For international travel, also check Apple’s stated exception for devices purchased in certain countries or regions; destination support alone may not determine eligibility.
- Google Pixel: Check both the supported Pixel models and destination list on Google’s Satellite SOS help page. Google says availability can depend on network coverage, network conditions and government agencies, so a listed country is not an unconditional coverage promise.
If your exact phone or destination is not listed, do not assume the feature will work there. Recheck the official pages close to departure because eligibility and availability can change.

Update and review emergency information
- Confirm that your phone is an iPhone 14 or later and that your destination and iOS version meet Apple’s current requirements.
- While you have reliable internet access, install the latest iOS update. Apple recommends updating before going off-grid.
- Review your Medical ID and add or update emergency contacts if appropriate. These preparations help make relevant information available during an emergency; they do not expand satellite coverage.
Learn the satellite connection flow
Try Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite demo before a remote trip, and learn where to find the feature on your phone. When cellular and Wi-Fi service are unavailable, the Satellite option may appear through Settings or Control Centre. When ordinary connectivity is available, those controls may instead open the demo. The demo lets you practise the flow; it does not establish that satellite service is available at your destination.

Prepare Satellite SOS on Google Pixel
Check status and keep Google Messages as the default
- Confirm that your exact Pixel model and destination are supported using Google’s current help page.
- Open Settings and check the phone’s Satellite SOS status. Follow the on-device prompts if the feature needs attention.
- Keep Google Messages as your default messaging app. Google says Satellite SOS becomes unavailable if you change the default messaging app.
- Review your emergency information and contacts on the device before departure.
Know what to expect in an emergency
If you cannot reach emergency services over an ordinary network, try the phone’s emergency call flow and select Satellite SOS when it is offered. Complete the questionnaire and follow the positioning prompts on screen. Google says the provider should reply by text within a few minutes, but that is not a guaranteed response time; remain outside with a clear view of the sky to improve your chance of receiving replies.

Apple Emergency SOS via satellite and Google Pixel Satellite SOS are emergency contact pathways for situations where ordinary cellular and Wi-Fi access are unavailable. They are not ordinary satellite chat services, and neither guarantees immediate contact, coverage at a particular spot or a particular emergency outcome. For a real emergency, follow the phone’s instructions and the local emergency-services flow.

- Exchange photos, texts and voice messages without cell service; taking and sending photos requires pairing your inReach device with your compatible smartphone by using the Garmin Messenger app (active satellite subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Rugged design features a high-resolution and scratch-resistant color touchscreen; can withstand impact, extreme weather and harsh temperatures (IP67 water rating)
- Internal, rechargeable lithium battery supports up to 350 hours with 10-minute inReach tracking and up to 95 hours in performance messaging mode
When the phone asks you to connect, move to a location with a clear view of the sky and follow its positioning guidance. Buildings, terrain, local network conditions and other factors can affect whether a connection is possible. Do not treat a supported country list, an earlier demo or a successful setup check as proof that service will work at every point on your route.
