To use Samsung DeX on a landscape monitor or TV, connect a DeX-compatible Galaxy device to the display with a compatible DeX or HDMI cable or adapter, unlock the device, and start DeX when prompted. Samsung documents DeX on an external display in landscape orientation; a keyboard and mouse are optional.
Before you connect: check device and display compatibility
DeX support depends on the exact Galaxy model, software, and connection mode. Confirm that your device supports wired external-display DeX rather than relying on its product family name. Samsung’s setup guide covers compatible devices and connection options: Samsung: How to use Samsung DeX.

For a wired workspace, the display needs a compatible input and the Galaxy needs a compatible DeX or HDMI cable or adapter. Samsung identifies HDMI adapters and DeX accessories as options, but does not endorse every third-party adapter. Check the accessory maker’s compatibility information for your exact device and display.
Set up DeX on a monitor or TV
- Connect the display. Plug the compatible DeX or HDMI cable or adapter into the Galaxy device and connect it to the monitor or TV.
- Unlock the Galaxy. On first use, accept the on-screen prompt and tap Start to launch Full Desktop mode.
- Start DeX manually if needed. If no prompt appears, open Quick Settings and tap the DeX icon.
- Choose how to control the workspace. Use the device screen, its touchpad feature, or an S Pen, or connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Peripherals are optional.
- Check the external display. DeX on an external display is landscape. If the display instead shows a copy of the phone or tablet, see the mirroring instructions below.
Samsung’s setup guide describes both wired and wireless DeX, but wireless availability and behavior vary with the Galaxy device and display. Wired and wireless are different connection choices, not a guaranteed performance ranking. Use a direct cable connection if that is what your setup requires.

If the external display mirrors the Galaxy screen
On some Galaxy devices running Android 16 with One UI 8, an external connection may initially mirror the device instead of extending the workspace. Samsung’s guide directs users to choose Extend in DeX settings when the option is available. Menu names and availability can vary by device.
- Open Settings from Quick Settings.
- Tap Connected devices, then Samsung DeX.
- Open Connected display and select Extend.
These steps apply to the documented mirroring case; they do not establish a universal screen-rotation switch for every external DeX setup.

Make the picture fit and text easier to read
If the DeX desktop does not fill the screen or looks distorted, check the monitor or TV’s picture-size and fit settings, then review its supported resolutions. Samsung notes that a display whose native resolution is not 1080p may need adjustment; this is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that every resolution or display will work. DeX modes and available resolutions depend on the device and software.

Troubleshoot a missing DeX desktop
- No DeX screen appears: Recheck support for the exact Galaxy model, confirm the cable or adapter is compatible and firmly connected, and verify the display input. Trying another display can help isolate a compatibility issue. Display resolution compatibility can also matter.
- The image is cut off or stretched: Check the display’s picture-fit settings and supported resolution, then adjust the display or DeX settings as available.
- You are checking DeX on PC support: Do not use PC-connection restrictions as proof that a separate monitor or TV connection is unsupported. Samsung lists model and software restrictions for DeX on PC; confirm support for the exact model and connection type you plan to use.

If buying an adapter, verify compatibility with the exact Galaxy model and the display’s available input. A multiport adapter may be useful if you also need to connect other peripherals, but it is not required for DeX itself. A keyboard and mouse can make desktop work more familiar, yet Samsung also documents device-screen, touchpad, and S Pen controls.

Samsung’s developer documentation describes external-display DeX in landscape, but its older device requirement tables are not a complete current compatibility list. Use the support information for your exact Galaxy model, software version, region, and connection mode before buying accessories or assuming a feature is supported. Samsung’s DeX developer documentation provides setup context and display information.
