Free-to-Play vs. Paid Games: Which Costs Less Over Time?

Neither free-to-play nor paid games are inherently cheaper. Compare access fees and every purchase over the same period for the experience you want.

Neither free-to-play nor paid games are automatically cheaper over time. A free-to-play game can cost nothing if you avoid optional purchases; a paid game starts with an upfront price but may add expansions, subscriptions, season passes, or microtransactions. To compare fairly, add up what you would actually spend over the same period for the kind of play you want.

What counts as the total cost?

Choose a time period—such as six months or two years—and the experience you want from each game. Count every expense needed to access, progress through, or enjoy that experience. Keep hardware out of the comparison if you already own it; include an access subscription only when it is an incremental cost for the way you play.

Game model Total-cost calculation
Free-to-play Initial price (usually $0) + in-game purchases + subscriptions or access fees + paid content
Paid game Upfront price + subscriptions or access fees + expansions, DLC, or season passes + in-game purchases

For each purchase, note whether it is needed for access, progress, competition, or a cosmetic preference. A storefront may label something optional even when it matters to the experience you personally want. Conversely, a paid add-on is not a required cost if you would be happy without it.

How to compare two games fairly

  1. Set the comparison. Pick the same number of months, the same platform context, and a similar kind of experience. Include a console access fee only if you would not otherwise pay it.
  2. List all charges. Record the base price, recurring subscriptions or access fees, DLC and season passes, virtual currency, cosmetics, loot boxes, and progression items.
  3. Separate required from chosen spending. Mark what is required to play or make progress, and what you would buy to get your preferred experience. Do not treat every optional purchase as inevitable.
  4. Add the costs for the period. Use the price you would actually pay and include recurring charges only for the months you subscribe. If virtual currency is sold in bundles, calculate what those bundles cost in real money rather than comparing an item’s currency price alone.
  5. Optionally compare cost per hour. Divide your total spend by the hours you expect to play. This can help compare different play habits, but it is a practical personal measure, not an official standard or proof that one game offers better value.

If you are comparing games with loot boxes, also check whether the game discloses odds and whether purchases use several layers of virtual currency. Those details can make the real-money cost harder to judge; the FTC’s consumer guidance discusses this issue in its Genshin Impact case.

Are free-to-play games really free?

They can be: if you do not buy anything and no separate access fee applies, your game spending can remain zero. But “free-to-play” describes the entry price, not necessarily the cost of the way you want to play. Games may sell characters, weapons, currency, cosmetics, or progression items. The CFPB explains that virtual-currency bundles and exchange rates can obscure an item’s real-world price in its video-game issue spotlight.

Decide in advance what you are willing to spend, and track purchases in real money. If a game’s shop uses bundles or multiple currencies, check the amount and price of each bundle before buying. For children, use platform or account spending controls where available and review a game’s purchase and parental-consent settings. The FTC’s 2025 guidance describes requirements tied to one specific settlement—including clear real-money prices and odds, and parental consent for loot boxes sold to children under 16—but that outcome should not be mistaken for a rule that applies identically to every game or jurisdiction.

Do paid games cost less in the long run?

Not necessarily. An upfront price establishes an initial cost, not a lifetime ceiling. Paid games can sell downloadable content, expansions, season passes, subscriptions, and microtransactions. The FTC’s 2020 staff perspective notes that games paid for upfront may still include microtransactions, while downloadable content can support an ongoing service model. It also records differing views: some participants saw optional purchases as a way to fund free or reasonably priced games; others raised concerns about confusing prices, pressure, pay-to-progress, and pay-to-win mechanics. That means the useful question is not simply whether a title has a price tag. Ask what content is included, what you would want to add, whether a subscription is needed for your access, and how long you expect to play. Optional spending can be zero in either model—or substantial in either—depending on the game and your choices.

What available spending figures can—and cannot—tell you

There is no reliable current cross-game dataset establishing average lifetime cost per player for free-to-play versus paid games. Market totals and surveys can add context, but they do not answer which model costs less for an individual.

  • U.S. market context: The Entertainment Software Association, Circana, and Sensor Tower reported $60.7 billion in U.S. consumer spending on video games in 2025, up 1.4% from 2024. The total spans physical and digital full games, DLC and microtransactions, subscriptions, hardware, and accessories, so it is not a model-by-model or per-player cost comparison. The ESA release also reports 20% growth in U.S. consumer spending on subscription services in 2025; that is a reason to account for subscriptions where relevant, not evidence that every player pays one.
  • UK loot-box measures: A 2022 UK government response, citing Ofcom estimates from 2020, says 4% of UK adults and 6% of UK children purchased a loot box in a free-to-play game; in paid-for games, the reported figures were 4% of adults and 3% of children. These are narrow, UK-specific purchase measures—not shares of all game spending or proof that one business model costs more. The same response says 63% of adult respondents to a UK player survey reported negative experiences with loot boxes, ranging from dissatisfaction to reported financial, gambling-related, or mental-health harms. That survey result is not a prevalence estimate for all players. See the UK government response.

The broader history is a shift from a fixed upfront price toward games that can earn revenue through purchases over their lifespan, as the CFPB describes. That explains why both the base price and later spending belong in the calculation; it does not establish a universal winner.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Which model is likely to cost you less?

Use your own expected spending, not the game’s label. If you can enjoy a free-to-play game without purchases, it may cost less than a paid title. If you are likely to buy currency, cosmetics, or progression items regularly, those purchases can outweigh an upfront price. A paid game may be less expensive for your preferred experience when its base edition includes what you want and you skip add-ons; it may cost more if you subscribe or buy substantial DLC.

For a decision you can revisit, keep a simple record: game, period, access fees, purchases, and the reason for each purchase. Compare the totals after the same number of months, then decide whether the spending matched the experience you wanted.
