Restream relays the feed to YouTube; the VPS still has to keep the encoder and source running. You can make the setup recover from some failures, but neither FFmpeg nor a VPS guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. For a first stream, YouTube requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait after enabling live access, according to Restream’s YouTube setup guide.
- A Restream account with the correct YouTube channel authorized. Restream says the channel owner must add the channel; a manager or editor is not sufficient.
- A VPS that can store or access your media file and sustain the required upload traffic. Restream recommends at least 10 Mbps upload and 25 Mbps or higher for Full HD; these are Restream recommendations, not a universal VPS sizing rule. Check your host’s sustained egress capacity and data-transfer terms.
- FFmpeg, a media source, and a way to protect your Restream stream key.
There is no provider-neutral VPS size or price that can be recommended from the available guidance: requirements depend on the source, its resolution and encoding, operating system, and host limits.

- Enable YouTube live streaming. Verify the channel by phone and complete YouTube’s live enablement flow. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow the 24-hour activation wait.
- Authorize the channel in Restream. In Restream, open the Channels area and connect the Google account that owns the channel. If multiple Google accounts are signed in, confirm you selected the intended channel.
- Create an encoder stream. In Restream, select New Stream, then Encoder | RTMP. Enable YouTube as a destination for that stream.
- Copy the RTMP endpoint URL and stream key. Enter these in your VPS encoder configuration. Restream says its key remains static unless reset, but a newly created RTMP stream may have a different key. Keep the key private: do not place it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or command transcript. Restream documents RTMP and SRT for external encoders; the FFmpeg example below uses RTMP.
Connecting YouTube to Restream and configuring the endpoint in your encoder are separate tasks. A channel can be authorized in Restream while the VPS is still publishing to the wrong endpoint or using the wrong stream key.
Prepare the VPS and FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg from a maintained package source for your VPS operating system, then put the media file on the server or make it available to the process. Exact installation commands and a suitable instance size vary by operating system, file format, encoding workload, and provider; verify the current instructions for your system. Also check that the host permits the necessary outbound connection and transfer volume.

FFmpeg documents RTMP output using an output URL and supports RTMPS, which is RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Use the secure endpoint when Restream provides one and it is appropriate for your setup. The general output form is:
ffmpeg [input options] -i /path/to/video.mp4 [encoding options] -f flv "rtmps://RESTREAM-ENDPOINT/APP/STREAM-KEY"This is a syntax illustration, not a ready-to-run command: replace the endpoint and key with the exact values shown for your Restream stream, and choose encoding options suitable for your source and target settings. Avoid putting a real key in shell history or logs. Prefer a protected configuration or secret mechanism with access limited to the account running FFmpeg.

For a continuous feed, the encoder must have content to send continuously. A single file ending is not itself a looping setup; configure a repeatable input or playlist according to the media workflow you intend to use. Confirm that the encoder’s output reaches Restream and that YouTube shows a healthy incoming feed in its live control room before relying on it.

Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
Restream’s YouTube guide, updated in 2026, lists the following settings and ranges. Treat them as its published guidance and check the current destination requirements when configuring the actual stream.

Match the encoder output to the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to send; do not choose a bitrate in isolation from those settings. A higher target also requires enough sustained outbound capacity from the VPS. Restream’s separate upload-speed figures above are guidance, not proof that a particular VPS can sustain a particular stream.
Keep the stream running and plan recovery
Run FFmpeg under a service manager or another supervisor so you can inspect logs and relaunch the process if it exits. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes options for continuing real-time processing through temporary output failures and attempting recovery. These are resilience tools, not a promise of seamless reconnection, and they do not ensure that YouTube will resume the same event automatically.

Test recovery with your actual VPS, Restream configuration, YouTube account, and event before relying on unattended operation. Confirm what happens after a network interruption, FFmpeg exit, host restart, or YouTube-side disconnect. Protect keys in service configuration and restrict who can read them.
Restream says its servers may be maintained and restarted when a stream runs continuously for more than 24 hours, and suggests a restart every 24 hours. Treat a planned restart as an interruption risk to manage, not as a guarantee that a broadcast will resume without intervention.

Restream’s 2026 guidance says Restream has no stream-duration limit and YouTube has no duration limit, but YouTube archives only streams under 12 hours. An always-on live feed and a single archived YouTube recording are therefore different things. If you need a VOD, plan broadcasts shorter than 12 hours or keep a separate recording; do not assume one continuous event will be archived in full.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
My stream does not start on YouTube
- Check live access: make sure the channel completed phone verification and, for its first live stream, the 24-hour enablement wait.
- Check the destination: confirm YouTube is enabled on the specific Restream encoder stream and that the intended channel is connected.
- Check the endpoint and key: copy the current URL and key from the correct Restream stream. A new RTMP stream may have a different key.
- Check encoder output: inspect FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s live control room to identify whether the encoder is publishing and whether YouTube is receiving it.
The stream drops or fails to recover
- Check VPS connectivity, outbound restrictions, host maintenance, and whether the FFmpeg process is still running.
- Review FFmpeg and service-manager logs to distinguish a process failure from a temporary output/network failure.
- Confirm the supervisor can relaunch the process and test the chosen FIFO recovery behavior. Neither recovery method guarantees the same YouTube event will continue.
The stream looks unstable or does not meet the target quality
- Compare codec, CBR mode, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with Restream’s YouTube guidance.
- Check sustained VPS upload capacity and provider transfer limits; a momentary speed reading does not establish reliable continuous egress.
- Inspect the incoming stream status in YouTube’s live control room before treating the configuration as stable.
The stream is live but there is no complete archive
Restream’s guidance says YouTube archives streams only when they are under 12 hours. A longer continuous broadcast may remain live without yielding the full recording as a YouTube archive. Use shorter events or capture a separate recording if preservation matters.
Restream through a VPS or publish directly to YouTube?
If YouTube is the only destination, sending FFmpeg directly to YouTube can remove the Restream relay from the route. Restream is relevant when you want its encoder workflow or need a relay for destinations you have configured. The VPS still runs the encoder in either architecture.
