To change which prerecorded video plays at a particular time while your YouTube broadcast stays live, schedule the change in your playout system—not in YouTube Studio. YouTube Studio can schedule the broadcast itself and provide an upcoming watch page and reminders; the encoder or cloud playout service supplies the video feed. For an ordered rotation, OBS can play a playlist. For changes such as “video A at 9 a.m., video B at noon,” you need a separate timed scheduling or automation layer.
First, decide what you mean by “schedule”
- Schedule the broadcast to begin later: Use YouTube Studio’s scheduled-stream workflow. This sets up an upcoming broadcast; it does not select which prerecorded video plays at a given time.
- Rotate through videos continuously: Set up a playlist in your playout system. OBS’s VLC Video source supports ordered or shuffled playback and looping.
- Switch videos at specified clock times: Arrange for a scheduling or automation layer in the playout system to change the content while the encoder feed continues. A playlist alone does not establish time-of-day switching.
Keep the two layers distinct: YouTube handles the live broadcast and its viewer-facing schedule, while the encoder or cloud service handles what is on air.

Schedule an upcoming broadcast in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live > Manage > Schedule Stream.
- Choose to reuse settings or create a new stream, then set up the scheduled broadcast.
- Connect your encoder to the stream using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. YouTube Help instructs creators to enter those details in the encoder to start streaming.
- Check the scheduled stream and encoder preview before the planned start. YouTube documents reminders for scheduled streams, so viewers can find the upcoming watch page and opt to be reminded.
The scheduled time applies to the broadcast, not to the timing of individual videos inside its feed. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can allow the encoder to start or stop the broadcast when enabled; they do not create a schedule for changing prerecorded content.
Use OBS for a continuous playlist
Choose the right source
- Media Source: Use this built-in OBS source to play an individual media file.
- VLC Video source: Use this source when you need a playlist. OBS documents controls for looping and shuffling the playlist.
These options support playback and rotation. An ordered playlist plays items in sequence, while shuffle changes the order; neither is evidence of a clock-time schedule for a particular item.

Compose the feed and go live
OBS scenes and sources let you compose the program that goes to the encoder output. Add the media source or playlist to the scene you intend to stream, confirm the right scene is active, and connect OBS to YouTube using the stream URL and key. Review the preview before going live so you can confirm the expected video and audio are reaching the broadcast.
OBS’s official documentation describes media playback, playlists, and scene/source composition, but does not establish a built-in clock-time scheduler for scene changes. If your requirement is “play video A at 9 a.m. and video B at noon while keeping the broadcast online,” plan for a separate scheduling or automation layer. Verify the capability and behavior of any tool you choose rather than assuming a playlist will make timed selections.

Choose between local and cloud playout
| Approach | Best suited to | What remains your responsibility | Cost and service terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local encoder such as OBS | A continuous file or playlist rotation, or a setup where you can maintain the computer running the encoder. | Keep the computer and connection running, monitor the feed, and add a separate scheduling layer if you need clock-time changes. | No comparable pricing or service-level measurements are established by the cited official material. A dedicated computer is optional, not a documented minimum requirement. |
| Cloud 24/7 playout | Unattended prerecorded-video streaming without maintaining a local computer as the playout host. | Check that the provider supports your needed playback schedule, monitor the feed, and confirm current service terms and recovery behavior. | YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre and Upstream as examples. Their current capabilities, prices, regional availability, and service levels are not established here. |
YouTube’s encoder guide identifies cloud-based tools for 24/7 playout, but that does not confirm that a particular service supports clock-time changes. If that feature is essential, verify it directly with the provider before building your schedule around it.

Test the schedule and monitor the stream
- Check the encoder preview and confirm the expected video and audio are present before relying on an unattended run.
- Verify that the correct item plays at each intended transition. A playlist test does not verify clock-time automation.
- Check that viewers can access the stream and that the broadcast remains live through a content change.
- Test recovery behavior if your encoder or service provides a failover or recovery option; do not assume a reconnect will preserve the intended schedule without testing.
- Continuously monitor audio and video quality, as YouTube Help advises.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a limit on the stated automatic-archiving behavior, not a recommended maximum stream duration or a guarantee that longer broadcasts will be archived the same way.

The playlist plays, but at the wrong time
A playlist provides sequence, loop, or shuffle behavior—not proof of time-of-day selection. Check that your scheduling layer is configured for the intended times and time zone, then observe the transition in a test run.
The encoder does not connect to YouTube
Confirm that the encoder has the correct YouTube stream URL and stream key, and that the intended scheduled stream is selected. Check the preview and connection status before the planned broadcast start.

The stream is live but has no expected audio or video
Inspect the active OBS scene and source, confirm the media file or playlist is available to the encoder, and monitor the preview for picture and sound before leaving the setup unattended.
A long broadcast is not automatically archived as expected
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not apply that statement to broadcasts at or above that duration; check YouTube’s current guidance and plan any recording or archive needs separately.
