Reg-suit does not capture Storybook stories. First use a compatible capture tool to render stories into image files; then point Reg-suit’s core.actualDir at that output directory, configure a snapshot key generator and publisher, and run Reg-suit to compare and publish the report.
How the Storybook and Reg-suit pipeline fits together
Reg-suit describes itself as a command-line interface for visual regression testing. Its run command handles syncing expected images, comparing them with current images, publishing results, and optionally notifying through an installed notifier plugin. It is not the Storybook screenshot generator. The handoff between the two tools is a directory of actual image files.

- Storybook renders your stories with the providers, styles, fonts, and assets they need.
- A capture tool opens the stories and writes screenshots to a directory.
- Reg-suit reads that directory through
core.actualDir, retrieves the expected snapshot set through a publisher plugin, compares images, and publishes the report.
Keep the capture output path and actualDir identical, and use stable screenshot filenames across runs so Reg-suit can compare corresponding stories.

Choose a capture tool that matches your Storybook version
Do not assume every screenshot package supports every Storybook major version. The cited Storycap README says it was tested with Storybook 7.x and 8.x. Storycapture’s integration page says it was created to support Storybook v9 with Storycap. StoryFreeze is an independent Playwright-based tool listed for Storybook 10 and requires Node.js 22 or newer. These are source-specific compatibility statements, not guarantees for every framework and package combination. Confirm the current tool documentation and your own project’s versions before adopting a route.

Choose based on the Storybook major version, whether you capture a running URL or a built Storybook, whether you need per-story timing or viewport options, the browser/runtime requirements, and where the tool writes files. There is no universally correct capture package across the cited versions.
Set up Storybook and generate image files
Start with a working Storybook installation for your project’s framework. Storybook’s setup guidance notes that build configuration, runtime providers or decorators, and static assets can require project-specific configuration. If a story does not render as it does in the application, fix its theme, providers, styles, fonts, or assets before treating the screenshot as a trustworthy baseline.
Capture from a running Storybook with Storycap
With Storybook running at the URL shown below, capture into Storycap’s documented default output directory:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →npx storycap http://localhost:9001 -o __screenshots__
Change the URL and output directory to match your project. Storycap also documents starting a server as part of capture:
npx storycap http://localhost:9001 --serverCmd "<project Storybook start command>"
For a built Storybook, build it to a directory, serve that directory locally, and capture the served URL. This separates the production-like build step from the screenshot step and makes the generated artifact available to the capture tool.

Use Storycap’s managed mode for per-story controls
Storycap’s managed mode uses its addon and withScreenshot decorator to support per-story capture options, such as delay, viewport, or skipping capture. The documented setup adds storycap to the addons in .storybook/main.js and registers withScreenshot in .storybook/preview.js. Follow the package’s current documentation for exact syntax for your installed version rather than copying an example intended for another Storybook major.
Configure Reg-suit to consume the screenshots
Initialize Reg-suit and select the plugins that fit your snapshot-key and storage workflow:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
npx reg-suit init
The documented initialization flow installs and interactively configures Reg-suit and selected plugins. The README also documents prepare for configuring installed plugins. Reg-suit’s key-generator plugins include Git-hash and simple-key options; publisher plugins include Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage.
A representative regconfig.json shape follows. It uses Storycap’s documented __screenshots__ output name; if you chose another capture directory, change actualDir to that exact path. The bucket name is illustrative and must be replaced with your own configuration.

Set the snapshot key and publisher deliberately
The key generator determines which snapshot set Reg-suit compares against. A Git-hash key can associate images with a commit; the documented simple-key alternative allows an arbitrary string. Decide how keys should behave for your main branch, feature branches, and CI runs so a run retrieves the intended baseline.
Recommended Free Tools
The publisher is responsible for retrieving previously published snapshots and storing current images and the report. Reg-suit documents S3 and GCS publisher plugins; select and configure the provider your project uses. If no prior baseline exists, review the first run’s output and establish the intended baseline through your project’s chosen workflow rather than accepting it silently.
Run the complete comparison and publish the report
Generate screenshots first, then run:
npx reg-suit run
Reg-suit documents this as equivalent to sync-expected, compare, and publish -n. The notification flag sends through any installed notifier plugin. In local scripts or CI, order the capture command before reg-suit run; Reg-suit cannot compare images that the capture step has not produced. Review the resulting HTML report and make an explicit decision about visual changes before updating the baseline.
Tune comparison sensitivity to your rendering stability
Reg-suit exposes threshold and matching controls that change which pixel differences are treated as meaningful. The README’s sample value is an example, not a universal recommended threshold.
thresholdRateis a ratio from 0 to 1 for the permitted changed-pixel rate.thresholdPixelis an alternative absolute changed-pixel threshold.matchingThresholdcontrols YUV color-distance matching; smaller values make matching more sensitive.- Antialias detection can be enabled to account for antialiasing differences.
- Concurrency can be configured; choose it with the resource limits and behavior of your environment in mind.
Set a project policy for these values and document it. Overly permissive thresholds can hide meaningful changes, while overly sensitive settings can make harmless rendering variation noisy. Stabilize fonts, data, providers, and assets before using thresholds to compensate for differences.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
Reg-suit finds no actual images
Confirm the capture command completed successfully, that files were written, and that core.actualDir points to the same directory relative to the project as the capture output. Check that filenames are stable and that your build or cleanup steps did not remove screenshots before the Reg-suit step.
There is no expected snapshot baseline
Verify that the configured publisher can access the intended storage location and that the key generator selects the expected snapshot set. For a first run without an existing baseline, review and establish the baseline intentionally through your team’s workflow.
Storybook capture fails or stories render incorrectly
Check that the server URL is reachable from the capture process and that the Storybook build starts cleanly. For visual mismatches, verify fonts, theme and runtime providers, styles, network-loaded resources, and component data. Storybook may need project-specific build and runtime configuration for stories to reflect the application.
Storycap configuration does not work with the installed Storybook
Recheck the Storybook major version and the capture package’s stated compatibility. The cited Storycap README lists Storybook 7.x and 8.x as tested; Storycapture’s integration page targets v9; StoryFreeze is listed for v10 and Node.js 22 or newer. Confirm current package documentation and framework support rather than assuming configuration transfers between majors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCloud publishing fails
Check the selected publisher plugin’s configuration, bucket or storage location, and the environment values available to the Reg-suit process. Reg-suit supports environment-variable substitution in plugin configuration; ensure CI has the required values without exposing credentials in committed files.

Too many or too few differences are reported
First remove unstable rendering inputs such as changing data or inconsistent fonts. Then review thresholdRate, thresholdPixel, matchingThreshold, and antialias handling against the project’s documented policy. Do not copy an example threshold without considering what it means for your stories.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a web page rather than a repeatable capture of Storybook stories, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace the Storybook-to-Reg-suit pipeline above: it captures URLs, while Reg-suit needs a stable set of story images in actualDir. One GET request returns an image or PDF. The example below saves a capture as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
