Reg-suit compares screenshots; it does not capture your website. Build the static site, generate repeatable browser screenshots, point Reg-suit at their directory, and run npx reg-suit run to compare them with expected images and produce a report. The setup below covers local runs and CI, including baseline selection and optional cloud publishing.
What Reg-suit does—and what it does not do
Reg-suit is a command-line tool for visual regression testing. It compares a current set of images with expected images and creates an HTML difference report. Configured publisher plugins can store snapshots and reports in cloud storage. It does not open your static site or make screenshots: the official example runs a separate Puppeteer capture script first. See the Reg-suit project README and official Puppeteer demo.

Choose stable pages and capture conditions
Decide which routes matter, then choose a consistent viewport, browser, fonts, and page-ready condition. Capture the built site—not an incomplete development state—and write one image per page to a known directory. The official demo illustrates Puppeteer and a screenshot directory; its commands are an example, not a framework-specific recipe.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the capture conditions the same for the baseline and candidate run. Changes in viewport, browser version, fonts, animation state, or content can create image differences unrelated to the code change you intend to review. Wait for the content you need before capture; for pages with delayed assets, define an appropriate readiness condition rather than relying only on a short arbitrary delay.

Install Reg-suit and initialize its configuration
- Build your static site using the build command already used by the project.
- Install Reg-suit as a development dependency. The project quick start uses
npm install --save-dev reg-suit; check the npm package listing and your Node.js environment for current compatibility rather than assuming an old example’s version applies. - Generate the screenshots with your capture script and confirm the output directory contains the images for the pages you selected.
- Run
npx reg-suit initfrom the project directory and follow the prompts for the installed version. The official README documentsreg-suit initas the setup command.
The official Puppeteer demo’s older interactive transcript selects reg-keygen-git-hash-plugin and reg-publish-s3-plugin, uses .reg as the working directory, and sets screenshot as the actual-image directory. Treat that transcript as an illustration; current prompts and plugin configuration should be checked against the installed version and its plugin documentation.
Configure the actual image directory and comparison sensitivity
Reg-suit reads regconfig.json at the project root. Its documented core settings include a working directory, actual-image directory, and threshold rate. A minimal shape is:
{
"core": {
"workingDir": ".reg",
"actualDir": "screenshot",
"thresholdRate": 0
}
}
Adjust paths to match your project. The threshold is documented as a value from 0 to 1; smaller values make the comparison more sensitive. The demo’s zero is an example, not a generally correct setting. Start with a value that fits your rendered output and review the report before deciding whether to make comparisons more or less sensitive.

The README also documents optional antialias handling, detailed difference reporting through x-img-diff-js, and a concurrency setting. Their exact behavior and configuration should be verified against the current README and installed version before relying on them.
Select how Reg-suit finds expected snapshots
The key generator determines which expected snapshot set is used for comparison. The Git-hash plugin identifies a comparison commit by traversing Git branch history; the documented GitHub-flow pattern associates expected snapshots with a topic branch’s base history. The main README also lists a simple key-generator plugin for workflows that use explicit or arbitrary keys. Choose automatic Git-history mapping when it matches your branch process; choose explicit keys when your team wants to control snapshot identity directly. See the project README for the plugin list and workflow guidance.
Choose whether to publish snapshots and reports
External publishing is useful when CI needs to retrieve expected images and retain reports outside a temporary runner. It is optional: first get capture, local comparison, and report generation working.

Amazon S3 publisher
The S3 publisher documentation describes fetching earlier snapshots from S3 as expected images and publishing current snapshots and reports. A bucket must exist and be accessible to CI. Documented configuration options include bucket name, optional encryption settings, custom domain, path prefix, and SDK options.
The plugin README’s documented IAM actions include s3:DeleteObject, s3:GetObject, s3:GetObjectAcl, s3:PutObject, s3:PutObjectAcl, and s3:ListBucket. Review the current plugin guidance and your AWS account’s security requirements before granting permissions; grant only the access your workflow needs.
Google Cloud Storage and other publisher choices
The Reg-suit README lists a GCS publisher as an alternative. Choose storage based on your existing cloud environment, access-control needs, and operating costs. The cited project documentation establishes plugin support, not current cloud pricing or publisher-program availability.

Run Reg-suit locally
After the screenshot script has written fresh images into the configured core.actualDir, run:
npx reg-suit run
The integrated run syncs expected images, compares them, and publishes results through configured plugins; notifier plugins can report results through integrations listed by the project. If expected images or publishing are not configured, follow the prompts and plugin setup for the workflow you chose. Review the generated HTML report to decide whether differences are intended.

The order matters: build the site, capture screenshots, then run Reg-suit. The project’s GitHub Actions example checks out the repository with full history, sets up Node.js, installs dependencies, and runs npx reg-suit run. Adapt it to your actual build and capture scripts, and use the README’s CI guidance for the installed version.

fetch-depth: 0. - Set up Node.js and install the project’s locked dependencies.
- Build the static site and run the browser capture script.
- Make sure the runner’s branch information is available if the Git-hash plugin uses it. Some CI jobs check out a detached HEAD; the README describes a branch-checkout workaround.
- Run
npx reg-suit runafter screenshots exist. Provide cloud credentials only if a publisher needs them.
Notifications are optional. Establish reliable capture, baseline selection, and report generation before adding GitHub, GitLab, Slack, or other notifier plugins listed by the project.
Or skip the browser setup
If your immediate need is to produce screenshot files without maintaining a browser-capture script, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one GET request. Reg-suit still performs image comparison; generate the image first, save it into your configured actual-image directory, then run Reg-suit.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. Troubleshooting common setup failures
- No screenshots are compared: Check that the capture script ran before Reg-suit, that it wrote image files, and that
core.actualDirpoints to that directory relative to the project configuration. - Reg-suit cannot find a suitable expected image: Check the configured key-generator, the snapshot history or explicit key, and whether the expected set was published where the plugin looks for it.
- Git-hash plugin fails in CI or selects the wrong base: Ensure the checkout includes the needed branch history and branch name. Detached-HEAD checkouts can hide branch context; use the project’s documented checkout workaround.
- S3 retrieval or publishing fails: Confirm the bucket name and CI credentials, verify that the bucket is reachable from the runner, and check the plugin’s required read, write, list, and deletion access against your policy.
- Reports show noisy differences: Compare the capture conditions for baseline and candidate runs, including viewport, browser, fonts, timing, and dynamic content. Then review whether threshold sensitivity or optional antialias handling fits the images.
- Setup prompts differ from an online example: The Puppeteer demo transcript is older. Follow the prompts and plugin documentation for the installed version, and verify compatibility for your Node.js, browser, and CI image; the available sources do not establish a universal version matrix.
Cost, performance, and reliability considerations
Reg-suit’s project materials establish that concurrency is configurable, but do not provide a universal runtime or performance figure. Runtime depends on how many pages you capture, how long each page takes to load, and the chosen comparison and publishing setup. Keep the page set and readiness conditions intentional so CI work is predictable. Cloud storage costs depend on your provider and usage; current prices are not established by the Reg-suit plugin documentation cited here.
For dependable comparisons, retain the same capture conditions and ensure CI has the expected branch history and storage access. Treat a difference report as evidence to inspect, not an automatic judgment that a visual change is wrong: intended design changes should update the baseline through your team’s chosen process.
