To fix audio and video going out of sync in a prerecorded YouTube live stream, first find where the mismatch begins: in the source file, the encoder’s local output, or the stream viewers receive. Check each point in order, then follow the branch that shows the problem. A regular YouTube video upload is a different workflow; the live-stream troubleshooting guidance below does not establish that YouTube automatically repairs sync in uploaded videos.
First, identify what you mean by a prerecorded YouTube stream
This guide covers a prerecorded video file played through OBS or another encoder into a YouTube Live event. It is not the same as uploading a video as a regular YouTube video. YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting guidance applies to live streams, not automatic sync repair for ordinary uploads.

Before changing settings, note whether the audio is consistently early or late, or whether the gap seems to grow during playback. These observations help describe the symptom, but do not by themselves identify a proven fix. The official guidance cited here does not prescribe a specific OBS sync-offset value or a correction for progressive drift.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLocate where the sync problem first appears
- Check the source file. Play the prerecorded file locally and compare clear events, such as speech with visible mouth movement. If it is already out of sync, the fault exists before YouTube’s live delivery path.
- Check a local recording or archive. If you save the encoder output locally, compare that file with the source. YouTube recommends checking the local archive as part of troubleshooting.
- Check the encoder preview. Compare audio and picture in OBS or your encoder while the file is playing. YouTube advises checking audio and video quality in the encoder.
- Check the viewer-facing stream or replay. If the source, local output and preview are in sync but viewers hear a mismatch, inspect stream health and the outbound connection next.
This sequence matters: a delivery-side symptom does not prove YouTube caused the fault, and changing an encoder setting cannot repair a source file that is already wrong.

Follow the branch that matches your result
The source file is already out of sync
Confirm the problem in another player if possible, then inspect the file or the process that created it. The cited live-stream guidance does not define how to repair a faulty source recording. Correct the source before using it as the live input; otherwise the encoder may simply transmit the same mismatch.
The source is fine, but the encoder preview or local archive is not
- Check that the intended video file and audio are routed together in the encoder, and review encoder diagnostics for errors.
- Use the latest version of your encoder. YouTube recommends checking encoder CPU load and errors; if the local output has a problem, it suggests trying a different encoder as a diagnostic.
- If OBS reports rendering or encoding performance trouble, investigate system load. OBS notes that GPU overload or bottlenecks can affect encoding performance; reducing scene or rendering load is relevant when diagnostics point to that issue.
Do not assume that dropped frames or a high CPU/GPU load is automatically the cause of every lip-sync problem. Treat performance as a likely area to investigate only when the encoder’s indicators support it.

The encoder preview is healthy, but the delivered stream is not
Check YouTube’s stream health messages and test the outbound internet connection. YouTube Help says, “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” OBS also notes that increasing dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. YouTube’s Live API health statuses include configuration or quality issues such as insufficient video delivery for smooth streaming.
If connection testing indicates a problem, investigate the network path and contact your internet provider as appropriate. A healthy preview points you toward delivery and connection checks; it does not prove a YouTube-side fault.

Check audio and encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance
Use these as platform encoder recommendations, not as guaranteed cures for every sync issue. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends these sample rates in its advanced settings:
| Audio format | YouTube’s listed recommendation |
|---|---|
| Stereo | 44.1 kHz |
| 5.1 surround | 48 kHz |
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These settings help align the encoder configuration with YouTube’s published recommendations; a settings change alone may not resolve an audio/video timing fault.

Run a realistic test before going live
- Start a test stream before the real event.
- Use audio and moving picture similar to what the actual stream will contain; a static image or silent test will not reveal the same problems.
- Compare the source, encoder preview and viewer-facing output, and check YouTube’s stream health messages during the test.
- If the problem reappears, record where it first becomes audible or visible and whether encoder or connection indicators show trouble. Return to that diagnostic branch rather than changing several settings at once.
YouTube Help specifically advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Common symptoms and what to check
| What you notice | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Audio and picture are out of sync in the original file | The source file or the process that created it; verify locally before streaming. |
| The source is fine, but the preview or local archive is not | Encoder routing, encoder errors and CPU load; try another encoder as a diagnostic if the local output remains faulty. |
| The preview is in sync, but viewers receive a mismatch | YouTube stream health and the outbound connection; check dropped frames and whether the connection sustains the configured bitrate. |
| The gap seems to grow over time | Note when it begins and compare the source, local output and delivered stream. The official sources cited here do not establish a specific drift diagnosis or offset correction. |
| Changing sample rate or keyframe settings makes no difference | Return to fault localization. YouTube’s values are encoder recommendations, not universal sync fixes. |
