Use a repeating Google Calendar event for appointments or scheduled activities, and the Android Clock app for a simple alarm that repeats on selected weekdays.
The right choice depends on what should happen after the alert: Tasks gives you a completion-based series, Calendar reserves time on your schedule, and Clock simply rings. The controls can vary slightly by Android phone, app version, language, and account, but the workflows below follow Google’s documented Android labels.

Choose the right kind of recurring alert
Android has three built-in ways to schedule something repeatedly, and they are designed for different jobs. Choosing the correct one first prevents a reminder from behaving like the wrong kind of notification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| What you need | Use | How it behaves |
|---|---|---|
| A repeating action or to-do | Google Tasks | The task appears on its schedule, can be marked complete, and then advances to the next occurrence. |
| A repeating appointment or time block | Google Calendar event | Each occurrence occupies a scheduled calendar slot and can be edited or removed as part of the event series. |
| An alarm that rings on selected weekdays | Android Clock | The alarm goes off on the days you select. It is an alarm, not a task that tracks completion. |
Use Tasks for actions such as taking medicine, sending a payment, checking equipment, or calling someone. Use Calendar when other people, a meeting room, travel time, or a defined start-and-end period matters. Use Clock when the alert itself is the point, such as waking up or leaving at a set time. A Clock alarm does not create a record that you finished the action, while a Calendar event does not advance like a completed task.

Set up a repeating reminder in Google Tasks
Google Tasks is the best choice when the reminder represents work you need to do, such as taking medication, submitting a report, paying a bill, or calling someone. A task can have a due date, a specific notification time, a repeat pattern, and an end condition.
Step 1: Create or open the task
- Open the Google Tasks app.
- Tap Add a new task (or the equivalent create button), enter a short description, and save it. If the task already exists, open it instead.
Use a description that still makes sense when it appears weeks later. For example, “Send rent payment” is more useful than “Do it,” especially when several recurring tasks are listed together. Put details in the task title or notes so that every future occurrence has the context you need.

Step 2: Add the first date and time
- Inside the task, tap Add date/time.
- Choose the date on which the series should begin.
- Choose a time if you want the notification at a particular hour, then confirm the date and time.
The first date is the anchor for the recurrence. If you choose a Monday as the starting date and repeat weekly, later instances follow that weekly pattern. Adding a time is important when the alert must arrive at a precise hour. A date by itself is still valid, but it uses the default notification time described below.
Step 3: Define the repeat pattern
- Tap Repeat.
- Under Repeats every, choose the available unit: day, week, month, or year.
- Set the interval offered for that unit. For example, a weekly task can repeat every week, while a daily task can use a daily interval.
The app presents only the controls supported for the selected unit. Review the preview or repetition information before saving so that a monthly task has not accidentally been configured as weekly. The starting date and selected unit work together: changing the starting date can change which weekday or calendar position later occurrences use.
Step 4: Choose when the series ends
- Under Ends, select one of the available choices:
- Never: continue creating occurrences until you change or stop the series.
- On: stop after a date you choose.
- After: stop after the specified number of occurrences.
- Tap OK, then tap Done.
- Reopen the task and check that its repetition information shows the intended interval and end condition.
Use After when you are following a fixed course, such as eight weekly treatments. Use On when the ending date matters more than the exact number of occurrences. Never is appropriate for an ongoing habit, but it is worth reviewing long-running series occasionally. Confirm the next date, notification time, and ending rule immediately after saving; this catches an incorrect interval before the first alert.
Make sure the notification arrives when you expect
A task with both a date and a time notifies at that scheduled time. If you add a date but no time, Google’s Tasks guidance says the notification is set for 9:00 a.m. on the due date. That default can be easy to miss if you expect an evening reminder, so add an explicit time for appointments, medication, school runs, or anything tied to a work shift.

Calendar deadlines also generate a notification at 9:00 a.m. local time on the deadline date when no other time is specified. A Calendar event with a start time follows the event’s notification settings instead. These defaults are reasons to distinguish a date-only task from an appointment with a defined hour.
Notifications also depend on Android permission and app settings. A correctly configured recurrence can exist without producing a visible alert if notifications are disabled or the app cannot schedule alarms.
Turn on Google Tasks notifications
- Open Google Tasks.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings, then Notifications.
- Turn on All Tasks notifications.
If several Google apps capable of notifying you about the same task are installed, Google notes that only one of them sends the notification. This avoids duplicate alerts, but it means you should check which app is currently handling task notifications. Also check Android’s general notification permission for that app if alerts are still absent.
Allow alarms and reminders in Android
- Open Android Settings.
- Go to Apps.
- Tap Special app access.
- Open Alarms & Reminders.
- Select Tasks and enable Allow setting alarms and reminders.
Phone makers sometimes rename or relocate these screens. If you cannot find an identical path, use the Settings search field for “Alarms & Reminders,” “special app access,” or “notifications.” Do not assume a missing reminder means the recurrence was deleted; first inspect the task itself and then these permissions.
Create a recurring Google Calendar event
Use Calendar when the item is an appointment, class, meeting, appointment window, or other scheduled activity that belongs on your calendar. A Calendar event reserves a time block; it does not have the task-style completion workflow where finishing one occurrence advances a to-do series.
- Open Google Calendar.
- Tap Create, then choose Event.
- Enter the event title.
- Set the starting date, start time, and end time (or choose an all-day event when appropriate).
- Tap Does not repeat.
- Select the frequency you need and adjust any available repeat details.
- Save the event.
Choose the event’s time zone and duration carefully when the activity involves travel or people in different locations. For a recurring class or meeting, the start and end times define the block each time it appears. An all-day recurring event is better for a date-based observance than for something that must alert at a particular hour.
Google states that repeating Calendar events are limited to 730 occurrences. For a series that would exceed that limit, create a later series when the first one ends rather than assuming the app will continue indefinitely.

Calendar can also be used to edit a repeating task’s date, time, repetition, or completion state. If you need to remove only one occurrence from a series while keeping the others, use Google Calendar’s occurrence-level editing rather than deleting the entire series. When editing, pay attention to whether the app asks to change one occurrence or the entire series; choosing the series option changes every future instance.
Set a repeating alarm in Android Clock
Choose the Android Clock app when you need a sound or alarm-style alert, such as waking up, leaving for work, or taking a break on selected weekdays. An alarm does not create a task, record whether you completed an action, or generate a next task after you dismiss it.
- Open the Clock app.
- Open the Alarm section.
- Create an alarm or tap an existing alarm to edit it.
- Choose the time.
- Select the days of the week on which the alarm should repeat.
- Save the alarm and verify that the selected weekdays are highlighted.
For a one-time or irregular action, Tasks is usually more suitable. For a fixed weekday pattern where the only requirement is an alert, Clock is faster and simpler. If the days change from week to week, do not rely on a fixed repeating alarm unless you are prepared to edit it each time.
Use Google Assistant to create a task by voice
Google Assistant can create and manage Google Tasks by voice on Android. A Google Account is required. A spoken request such as “Hey Google, remind me to call Mom at noon tomorrow” describes a timed task; after Assistant creates it, open Tasks and add or verify the repeat settings if you need a series.
To check tasks, Google’s help guidance points to the Tasks area in the Google app or to Assistant Tasks settings in Google Home. Notification controls can also be exposed through Android’s app-notification settings. Voice and AI-supported actions can vary by language, country, account, age, and app version. Google currently documents some AI-supported actions as limited to English in the United States for users aged 18 or older, and advises checking the resulting task because automated interpretation can be wrong.

Edit, complete, or stop a recurring task
Change the schedule
Open the task in Google Tasks and select its repetition information. From there you can change the date, time, repeat interval, or ending rule. Save the change and inspect the next occurrence before leaving the task. If the schedule is no longer appropriate, changing the recurrence is safer than creating a duplicate series with the old schedule still active.

Complete the current occurrence
Marking a recurring task complete finishes the current instance and advances the series to its next scheduled instance. This is why Tasks is useful for habits and repeating chores: you do not need to recreate the task after every completion. If you mark an occurrence complete early or by mistake, reopen the task and check the next scheduled instance before making another change.
Stop the series
If you no longer want future occurrences, edit the repetition and end the series according to the option shown in the app. Google documents an important limitation: once a repeating series is stopped, it cannot be restarted as that same series. If you later need it again, create a new repeating series. Record the intended schedule before stopping if you expect to recreate it later.
Delete only one occurrence
When one date is an exception—such as a holiday or a canceled appointment—use Google Calendar to remove or edit that individual occurrence while leaving the rest of the series intact. Deleting the entire task or series is not the same as skipping one date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limitations that affect recurring Tasks
- Shared tasks and subtasks cannot repeat. A repeating series must be a regular task that is eligible for recurrence.
- Repeating tasks cannot be moved to another list. Decide which list should own the series before setting it up.
- Future instances are not all displayed at once in Calendar. A limited number are shown initially; additional instances appear over time.
- Stopping is not reversible for the same series. Plan to create a new series if the schedule resumes later.
- Product capacity has upper bounds. Google’s Tasks help lists a maximum of 100,000 tasks across all lists and 20,000 uncompleted tasks in a single list. These are product limits, not recommendations for normal personal use.
If a task needs collaboration, subtasks, or frequent reassignment, consider whether a nonrepeating parent task with separate dated items better matches the workflow. A repeating task is also not a substitute for a Calendar event when the item requires a shared time block.
Troubleshoot a reminder that did not appear
The task exists but no notification appeared
- Open the task and confirm that it has a date and, if required, a time.
- In Tasks, check Profile picture > Settings > Notifications and enable All Tasks notifications.
- In Android Settings, verify Apps > Special app access > Alarms & Reminders > Tasks > Allow setting alarms and reminders.
- Check the phone’s general notification permission for Tasks and make sure the device is not silencing notifications through a mode or schedule you enabled.
- If multiple Google apps can notify for tasks, identify which one is currently delivering the alert and check that app’s notification permission.
The alert came at the wrong time
- Reopen the task and verify that a time was saved, rather than only a date.
- Check the phone’s time zone and automatic date/time setting.
- For Calendar, inspect the event’s start time, time zone, and repeat rule.
- For Clock, confirm that the correct weekdays are selected on the alarm itself.
The recurrence looks wrong
- Check the starting date; the first date determines the pattern.
- Review the unit under Repeats every and the interval value.
- Check the Ends setting for an accidental date or occurrence count.
- Remember that shared tasks and subtasks are not eligible for repeating schedules.
- Look for a second series created by voice or a previous setup, which can make alerts appear duplicated.
Examples: which setup fits common needs?
| Example | Recommended setup | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Take a prescription every day at 8 p.m. | Google Tasks with a daily repeat and an explicit time | You can mark each occurrence complete and see the next one. |
| Attend a team meeting every Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. | Google Calendar event | The meeting needs a time block rather than a completion-based to-do. |
| Wake up at 6:30 a.m. Monday through Friday | Android Clock alarm | The requirement is a reliable repeating alarm on selected weekdays. |
| Pay a bill for six consecutive months | Google Tasks with a monthly repeat and an After count | The series can end automatically after the planned number of payments. |
| Call a family member every second Sunday | Google Tasks with a repeating weekly or monthly pattern, depending on the available interval controls | The task can be completed each time and advanced to the next scheduled call. |
| Attend a recurring class with other people | Google Calendar event | Participants need a shared schedule and a defined start and end time. |
| Water plants every three days | Google Tasks with a daily interval | The task can repeat at an interval and be marked complete after each watering. |
After creating any series, open it once and verify three things: the next date, the notification time, and the end condition. That quick check catches most setup mistakes before they affect the next reminder.

Best Value
Should I use Tasks or Calendar for a recurring appointment?
Use Google Calendar for appointments, meetings, classes, and other scheduled time blocks. Use Google Tasks for actions you complete, where finishing one occurrence advances the next one.
Can I make a repeating task shared?
No. Google’s documented limitation says shared tasks and subtasks cannot be set to repeat. Use a regular eligible task or separate dated items instead.
Can I skip one date without deleting the whole recurring series?
Use Google Calendar to edit or remove one occurrence while keeping the rest of the series. Deleting the task or series removes more than a single exception.
Why are notifications missing even though the recurrence is visible?
Check Tasks’ All Tasks notifications setting, Android’s notification permission, and Settings > Apps > Special app access > Alarms & Reminders > Tasks > Allow setting alarms and reminders. Device labels can vary.
How many repeating Calendar events can one series have?
Google states that repeating Calendar events are limited to 730 occurrences. Start a later series when the first one reaches that limit.
Can I restart a repeating task after stopping it?
Not as the same series. Once stopped, create a new repeating series if you need the schedule again.
The Bottom Line
Use Google Tasks for repeating actions, Google Calendar for recurring appointments and time blocks, and Clock for weekday alarms. In Tasks, the essential path is task > Add date/time > Repeat; set an explicit time when 9 a.m. is not suitable, choose the correct end condition, and verify notifications and Alarms & Reminders permission if an alert is missed.
