Google Tasks is the simplest starting point for a personal list tied to Google Calendar. Microsoft To Do fits an Outlook or Exchange workflow. TickTick and Any.do advertise broader recurrence and reminder choices. Todoist can connect to Google or Outlook calendars, but its current help documentation says recurring reminders cannot be configured in its Android app.
No app can guarantee prompt delivery on every Android handset. Battery optimization, notification permissions, Do Not Disturb, and infrequent app use can change the result, so a short phone-specific test matters more than a feature badge.

Start with your account and calendar
A task manager is most useful when it lives where you already check your schedule. Moving tasks between unrelated accounts creates duplicate reminders, split lists, and uncertainty about which copy is current.
| Your situation | Best starting point | What to verify before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Google Calendar user who wants a straightforward personal list | Google Tasks | Whether its recurrence limits work for your shared tasks, subtasks, and list structure |
| Outlook or Microsoft 365 user | Microsoft To Do | That the reminder schedule you need is available in the Android app and appears correctly across your signed-in devices |
| Many custom repeat rules or several reminder styles | TickTick or Any.do | The exact custom pattern, notification behavior, and calendar integration on your account |
| Interested in Todoist with calendar integration | Todoist | Whether configuring recurring reminders on the web or desktop, rather than Android, fits your routine |

Decide what “reminder” means for you
Task apps use “reminder” to describe several different behaviors. Write down the one you need before comparing apps:
- At a precise time: for example, a medication or meeting preparation alert at 8:30 a.m.
- On a due date: a date-level prompt, even when no clock time is specified.
- Before a deadline: an advance warning followed by a due-time alert.
- Repeatedly until completion: multiple alerts for one unfinished item, if the app supports that behavior.
- By email as well as a phone notification: useful when you may miss a mobile alert.
Do not assume that a “due date” automatically produces a time-specific notification. Confirm the app’s documented behavior and then test it with the phone settings you actually use.
Google Tasks notification behavior
Google’s Android help says a task needs both a date and a time to trigger a task notification at the scheduled time. Its documentation also describes dated Tasks items appearing in Google Calendar. For a task without a time, Google describes a 9:00 a.m. notification; deadline notifications are likewise described at 9:00 a.m. local time. These are documented defaults, not a promise that every handset will deliver an alert promptly.
Google specifically warns that some Android phones turn off or delay notifications for apps used infrequently. In the Tasks app’s Android notification settings, check that notifications are allowed and review the Allow setting alarms and reminders permission when the phone exposes it. Battery-management and lock-screen policies can still affect delivery.
Vendor-advertised reminder options
TickTick advertises ordinary reminders, email reminders, and flexible recurring rules. Any.do’s Google Play listing advertises one-time and recurring reminders plus calendar integrations. Those descriptions indicate available features, not a controlled test of alert reliability, timing precision, or behavior on every Android version. Treat them as candidates to test rather than proof of superiority.

Understand recurrence before you build a routine
Recurring tasks are not just a choice between “daily” and “weekly.” Check the interval, the days selected, the end condition, and what happens after you complete an occurrence. A useful app should make the next occurrence predictable without forcing you to recreate the task.
Google Tasks recurrence and its limits
Google Tasks on Android can create repeating tasks with day, week, month, or year intervals and an optional ending condition. That covers common habits, appointments, and annual reminders. Google documents three restrictions that can change your choice:
- Shared tasks cannot repeat.
- Subtasks cannot repeat.
- A recurring task cannot be moved to another list.
Google also says that once a recurring series is stopped, it cannot simply be restarted as the same series. If your workflow depends on sharing a repeating checklist, nesting repeating steps under a parent task, frequently reorganizing lists, or pausing and resuming one series, test those cases before migrating a large backlog.
Custom patterns in TickTick and Any.do
TickTick advertises weekly, monthly, yearly, and custom recurrence rules. Any.do advertises one-time and recurring reminders. The broad labels do not tell you whether a pattern such as “the first weekday,” “every three weeks,” or “the last day of the month” behaves exactly as you expect. Enter one representative task in each candidate and inspect the next two or three occurrences before relying on it.
Todoist’s Android recurrence caveat
Todoist’s help material documents Google and Outlook calendar integrations, but it explicitly says recurring reminders are not supported in Todoist for Android. Its instructions direct users to add recurring reminders through the web or desktop experience. If every occurrence must generate a reminder, this extra setup step is a decisive workflow constraint, not a minor interface difference.

Compare sync and calendar behavior
“Sync” can mean several things: the same task list on another device, a task copied into a calendar, a two-way connection, or integration with a work account. Ask which of those outcomes you need.

Google Tasks and Google Calendar
Google says dated Tasks items appear in Google Calendar. That makes Google Tasks a natural first trial for someone already using Google Calendar and a personal Google account. Verify the list and date in Calendar after creating a test task, and check whether your preferred calendar view makes task entries visible enough for daily use.
Keep Google’s recurrence restrictions in mind when choosing this route. A task that must be shared, nested as a subtask, or moved between lists may not fit the documented repeating-task model.
Microsoft To Do, Outlook, and Exchange
Microsoft provides Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and web versions of Microsoft To Do. Its setup documentation says the service syncs automatically through the Microsoft Tasks API, stores the data in Exchange, and integrates with Outlook Tasks. This is the ecosystem-aligned starting point when your work and personal task habits already live in Outlook or Microsoft 365.
Microsoft’s support material treats due dates and reminders as separate settings. During your trial, create both a dated task and a timed reminder, then check the result in Outlook and on another signed-in device. Confirm that the account you use on Android is the one whose Exchange data you expect to see.

Calendar integrations in Any.do, TickTick, and Todoist
Any.do’s Play listing advertises calendar sync and integrations. TickTick’s cited feature material emphasizes reminders and recurrence rather than specifying a single calendar destination. Todoist documents integrations with Google or Outlook calendars. Because integration direction, account eligibility, and display behavior can vary, create a test appointment and a test task and inspect both services rather than assuming that “calendar integration” means a full two-way sync.
Profile the main choices
Google Tasks: simple Google-centered lists
Choose Google Tasks first when you want a relatively direct personal list connected to Google Calendar and you are comfortable with day, week, month, or year repetition. It is a poor fit when your core list contains repeating shared tasks or repeating subtasks, or when you need to move an active recurring task among lists. Its documented Android behavior also makes exact date-and-time entry important: a date alone is associated with a 9:00 a.m. notification in Google’s help description.
Microsoft To Do: Outlook and Exchange continuity
Microsoft To Do is the logical candidate when Outlook Tasks and Exchange are already your source of truth. Automatic synchronization through Microsoft’s Tasks API and clients for Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and the web reduce the need to maintain separate work and phone lists. Confirm reminders in the Android app, because cross-device availability does not by itself prove that every notification setting matches your preferred schedule.
TickTick: advertised flexibility
TickTick is worth a hands-on trial when you need custom recurrence, email reminders, or several reminder options. Start with your hardest real pattern rather than a daily sample: include the interval, selected weekdays, and an ending condition you expect to use. Then verify the next occurrences and the alert channels on your Android phone.
Any.do: recurring reminders and calendar connections
Any.do’s Google Play description advertises one-time and recurring reminders and calendar integrations. That combination can suit a reader who wants reminders and schedule visibility in one app. Test the exact calendar account, recurrence rule, and notification timing you need; the listing is a vendor description, not an independent reliability measurement.
Best Value
Todoist: capable calendar integration, Android reminder limitation
Todoist may fit a calendar-connected workflow, especially if you are willing to configure recurring reminders on the web or desktop. Its documented lack of recurring-reminder creation in the Android app makes it less suitable for a phone-only setup where every repeat must be configured from the handset.

Do this before importing years of tasks. Use the same account, phone, notification profile, and calendar you will use in real life.
- Install and sign in. Use the account that should own the tasks. If the app offers multiple account types, record which one you selected.
- Allow notifications. Accept the Android notification prompt, then open the app’s notification settings and confirm that task alerts are enabled. In Google Tasks, check the documented Allow setting alarms and reminders permission when available.
- Create a timed one-time task. Set it a few minutes ahead. Lock the phone and observe the alert’s sound, vibration, lock-screen display, and action buttons.
- Create a date-only task. Note the time the app assigns. For Google Tasks, Google documents 9:00 a.m. local time for tasks without a time and for deadline notifications.
- Create the hardest recurring task you need. Use the real interval, selected days, end condition, and list or parent-task arrangement. Do not test only a simple daily repeat if your routine is monthly or irregular.
- Complete one occurrence. Confirm that the next occurrence is generated where you expect it and that its date reflects the rule you entered. If the app’s behavior is unclear, do not migrate critical routines yet.
- Check the calendar. For Google Tasks, look in Google Calendar for the dated item. For an integration advertised by another app, inspect both the task app and the selected calendar account.
- Check another client. Open the service on a second device or its web client. Microsoft To Do users should verify the Outlook Tasks view and another signed-in client because Microsoft documents Exchange-backed synchronization.
- Repeat under normal phone conditions. Test with your usual battery level, lock-screen policy, Do Not Disturb schedule, and Wi-Fi or mobile connection. A result obtained only while the app is open is not a useful reminder test.
Fix missed or late reminders
Work from the phone outward; changing apps first can hide a local Android setting that would affect every task manager.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Android’s app notification settings and make sure the task app and its reminder channel are allowed. Check sound, vibration, lock-screen visibility, and any per-channel silent setting.
- Review battery optimization or background restrictions for the app. Google warns that some phones delay or turn off alerts for apps used infrequently.
- Check the app’s alarm or reminder permission. Google’s documentation specifically calls out Allow setting alarms and reminders for Tasks.
- Inspect Do Not Disturb, Bedtime, driving, work-profile, and other modes that may suppress alerts.
- Verify the task has the intended date and time, time zone, recurrence end condition, and account. A date-only item may alert at a documented default time rather than the time you had in mind.
- Create a new timed test task. If it works while an older recurring task does not, inspect the series rule instead of repeatedly changing notification permissions.
There was no controlled comparative Android notification test establishing that one of these apps is universally more reliable. Your phone’s observed behavior under normal settings is the evidence that matters for a time-sensitive obligation.
Match restrictions to your routine
| Requirement | Questions to answer | Potential constraint from the documented behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Shared repeating checklist | Can a recurring item be shared and edited by other people? | Google says shared tasks cannot repeat. |
| Repeating subtasks | Can each nested step recur independently? | Google says subtasks cannot repeat. |
| Frequent list changes | Can an active series move between lists? | Google says recurring tasks cannot be moved to another list. |
| Pause and resume | Can a stopped series be restarted as the same series? | Google says a stopped series cannot simply be restarted. |
| Phone-only setup | Can every required reminder be created on Android? | Todoist says recurring reminders must be added on web or desktop, not Android. |
| Work-account continuity | Where is the authoritative copy stored? | Microsoft describes Exchange storage and Tasks API synchronization for To Do. |
Make the final choice
Use this order when two apps appear close:
- Eliminate workflow blockers. Remove any app that cannot represent your shared tasks, subtasks, list moves, recurrence pattern, or phone-only setup.
- Choose the account that should own the data. Google Calendar users should start with Google Tasks; Outlook and Exchange users should start with Microsoft To Do unless a documented restriction rules it out.
- Test the hardest reminder. A simple daily alert proves little. Test the longest interval, unusual weekday pattern, email requirement, or calendar connection that you actually depend on.
- Check delivery on your handset. Keep the app only if the timed test arrives under ordinary battery, notification, and Do Not Disturb conditions.
- Import gradually. Move one routine or one list first. Keep the original list available until the new app has produced several expected occurrences and synchronized correctly.
Feature availability can change with app versions, Android releases, account types, and regions. Recheck the current in-app settings and help documentation when a task is safety-critical, shared with a team, or tied to a work account.
