RCON is disabled when no password is set. It is separate from txAdmin: RCON provides a remote command console, while txAdmin is the included web panel for broader server administration and monitoring.

What you need before enabling RCON
RCON setup is short, but it depends on editing the correct configuration and opening the correct network path. Gather these items first:

- Access to the
server.cfgloaded by the FXServer instance you intend to administer. - Permission to save the file and restart the server through your host panel, process manager, or normal self-hosting workflow.
- A strong, unique RCON password that is not used for any other service.
- The server address and the applicable external UDP port supplied by your host or recorded in your server configuration.
- An RCON client that supports UDP.

How FiveM RCON works
FXServer exposes RCON only when the RCON password convar is set. The relevant setting is:
set rcon_password "YOURPASSWORD"The set form places the value in the server’s convar configuration. The password is the switch that enables the interface; if the password is unset, RCON is disabled. Cfx.re’s Server Commands documentation also specifies UDP as RCon’s transport.
RCON is a command interface, not a web dashboard. An RCON client sends administrative commands to the server and receives the server’s responses. It does not replace the server’s configuration files, operating-system controls, firewall, or process manager. You still need those systems to start, stop, restart, and protect the FXServer process.
Step-by-step: enable RCON in server.cfg
1. Identify the active server.cfg
Open the configuration file actually loaded by the FXServer process. A machine can contain several FiveM server directories or more than one instance, so editing an unused copy will not change the server you are running.
Use the startup configuration, host control panel, or the server’s normal deployment documentation to confirm the active file. If your provider offers a configuration editor, open the file associated with the specific instance rather than a template or backup.
2. Add or uncomment the RCON setting
In the active file, add this line on its own:
set rcon_password "YOURPASSWORD"If the file already contains the setting commented out, remove the comment marker and replace the example password. Keep the quotation marks around the value, especially if your chosen secret contains characters that could otherwise be interpreted as configuration syntax.
Do not add a second competing rcon_password line in another part of the file while troubleshooting. Keep one authoritative setting so you can see exactly which value the server should receive.

3. Choose and protect the password
Replace YOURPASSWORD with a long, unique secret generated for this server. Do not reuse an administrator, game-panel, operating-system, or personal password. Anyone who obtains the RCON secret may be able to issue server commands, so treat it as an administrative credential rather than as an ordinary player password.
- Do not commit the value to a public or shared Git repository.
- Do not include it in screenshots, tutorials, tickets, chat messages, or support posts.
- Do not paste it into a public configuration example.
- Store it in the private credential system your team already uses, with access limited to people who administer the server.
The line in a private configuration file will necessarily contain the secret in plain text. That makes access control for the file, host account, backups, and support workflow important.
4. Save the configuration
Save the file without changing unrelated settings. If you use a provider’s web editor, use its save or apply action and confirm that the edit was accepted. If you deploy configuration from a source-controlled or templated workflow, update the authoritative source and let that workflow render the active file; otherwise a later deployment may overwrite your change.
5. Restart FXServer
Restart the FiveM server through its normal control path. A restart is the dependable way to make the new convar take effect. Use the host panel’s restart action, your process manager, or the same service procedure you normally use for the instance. Avoid editing a stopped instance’s file and then testing a different running instance.
After the restart, allow the server to finish its normal startup before testing. If your platform displays startup output, check that the intended configuration file was loaded and that the process stayed online.
6. Record the endpoint and UDP port
RCON clients need the server address, the RCON password, and the applicable UDP port exposed by the host. There is no single universal external RCON port stated by the cited Cfx.re documentation. Record the port provided by your hosting company, cloud setup, router forwarding rule, or server configuration instead of assuming a default.
The port visible to an RCON client may be an externally mapped port rather than the internal port on the FXServer machine. If a host supplies a connection endpoint, use that exact address and port.

7. Connect with a UDP-capable RCON client
Create a connection in an RCON client using:
- Address: the server address or hostname supplied by the host.
- Port: the applicable exposed UDP port for RCON.
- Password: the value assigned to
rcon_password.
Make sure the client is configured for UDP. A TCP-only connection will not match FXServer’s documented RCon transport and can fail even when the address and password are correct.
Network and firewall checks
RCON can be correctly enabled in server.cfg and still be unreachable from outside the machine. Check every network layer between the client and FXServer:
- Host firewall: allow the required UDP traffic for the port your host or deployment uses.
- Cloud firewall: if the server is behind a cloud security group or provider firewall, allow the same UDP port there.
- Router or NAT firewall: for a self-hosted server, forward the externally exposed UDP port to the correct internal machine and port.
- Client protocol: select UDP in the RCON client rather than relying on a TCP default.
- Port mapping: use the external port given by the provider when internal and external ports differ.
Only open the port required for your deployment. If your firewall supports source-address restrictions, limiting RCON access to trusted administration networks is a sensible hardening measure. Verify the rule whenever the server is moved, the provider changes its network layout, or the public endpoint changes.
How to verify that RCON is working
Use a controlled verification instead of immediately issuing disruptive commands:
- Confirm that the server restarted after the configuration change.
- Confirm that the RCON client is pointed at the right address and UDP port.
- Connect with the exact password from the active configuration.
- Run a harmless command supported by your administration workflow and check that a response returns.
- Record the working address, port, and the date of the test in your private operations notes, but never record the password in a shared log.
A successful connection proves that the client can reach the RCON endpoint and authenticate. It does not prove that every firewall rule is minimal or that every person with access to the credential should retain it, so review access separately.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The client says RCON is disabled or authentication is refused
- Reopen the file loaded by the running instance and verify that the line is exactly
set rcon_password "YOURPASSWORD"with your real value substituted. - Check for a still-commented line, a spelling error, or an accidental edit to a template rather than the active file.
- Restart the correct FXServer instance after saving.
- Copy the password carefully. A mismatch is different from a network timeout; do not change firewall rules until you have ruled out a credential error.
If no password is set, RCON is disabled by design. Removing the setting or leaving it unset is therefore also the way to turn RCON off, followed by a restart so the running process no longer uses the previous configuration.
The client times out
- Check the address and externally exposed port supplied by the host.
- Confirm that the client is using UDP, not TCP.
- Check the host firewall and any cloud or router firewall in front of the server.
- Verify that a NAT or port-forwarding rule points to the machine running this FXServer instance.
- Make sure the server process is online after the restart.
A timeout usually indicates reachability or mapping rather than a bad password. Work from the client outward through the firewall layers instead of repeatedly editing server.cfg.

The change disappears after a deployment
Find the authoritative configuration source. A panel, deployment script, image, or template may regenerate server.cfg. Put the RCON setting in that source and redeploy it, then restart and test again. Keep the password out of any public repository used to generate the file.
The password may have been exposed
Treat an exposed RCON password as compromised. Replace it with a new unique value in the active configuration, save and restart the server, then update every authorized RCON client. Remove the old value from screenshots, tickets, chat exports, and repositories where you control deletion, but assume that copied material may remain accessible and avoid reusing the old secret anywhere.

RCON and txAdmin solve related administrative problems but are not interchangeable setup methods. The specific action that enables RCON is setting rcon_password; enabling or using txAdmin does not set that convar for you.

When RCON is the right tool
Choose RCON when your administration workflow needs a lightweight remote console, when an existing tool already speaks RCON, or when you need to send commands without opening the broader web-management interface. You still need to secure the UDP path and the password.
When txAdmin is a better fit
Use txAdmin when you want a web panel for managing and monitoring the server, editing configuration through its interface, and handling more than command execution. It is included with FXServer, but its web access is a separate administrative surface with its own setup and account controls. Running txAdmin does not eliminate the need to configure RCON if a separate RCON client or integration requires it.
Can both be used?
Yes. They are separate interfaces. A server can use txAdmin for web administration and RCON for remote-console access, provided each interface is configured and protected independently. Do not assume that a working txAdmin login proves that RCON is enabled, or that a working RCON connection grants access to txAdmin.

Self-hosting and managed hosting choices
Cfx.re lists game-server hosting providers as an available setup path. A managed host can remove much of the operating-system, firewall, and process-management work, while self-hosting gives you direct control over the FXServer machine and network. The RCON configuration line is the same conceptually, but the operational steps differ:
For a managed FiveM deployment, Godlike.Host FiveM server hosting provides a game panel with SFTP/FTP access and free DDoS protection. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026).

Provider pricing, regions, and terms vary over time. Select a deployment based on the control and operational support you need, not on an assumed universal RCON port.
Security practices for ongoing RCON use
Limit who can reach the endpoint
RCON is an administrative interface. Keep the UDP port closed everywhere it is not needed, and use network-level source restrictions when your firewall or provider supports them. Recheck those rules after migrations or network changes.

Keep the secret out of operational material
Configuration screenshots, copied logs, support tickets, shell history, chat transcripts, and repositories are common leakage points. Redact the value before sharing any configuration. If someone needs to reproduce the syntax, show set rcon_password "YOURPASSWORD" rather than the live secret.
Rotate after personnel or system changes
Change the password when an administrator leaves, a host account is transferred, a repository or backup is exposed, or the value may have been copied. Edit the active configuration, restart the server, and update only the clients that should retain access.
Document the endpoint without documenting the secret
Private operations notes can record the server name, the provider-supplied UDP port, the configuration owner, and the restart procedure. Keep the password in a restricted credential store instead of placing it beside the endpoint in a broadly shared document.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Confirm the active
server.cfgbefore every configuration change. - Keep exactly one intentional
set rcon_passwordentry for the instance. - Use a unique password and protect it as an administrative credential.
- Restart after adding, changing, or removing the setting.
- Record the host-supplied UDP port and update it if the endpoint changes.
- Ensure host, cloud, and router firewalls allow only the required UDP traffic.
- Use a UDP-capable RCON client.
- Test with a harmless command after a restart or network change.
- Rotate the password immediately if it is exposed.
- Keep txAdmin credentials and network rules separate from RCON credentials and rules.
